Re: Tikibird\'s April 1980 High School Band Trip Report: Hotel Royal Plaza - Completed A Day at the Magic Kingdom We had been to the MK two years prior, so we knew what to expect. One of the days, we participated in the Main St. Parade. As I was the drum major my senior year, this meant I got to lead the band down Main St., which is one of my all-time favorite memories. We were pretty much free to see what we wanted to see, as long as we stayed in the park. Main St. was one of my favorite places, even then, and I enjoyed the various bands that were playing there. (these pictures were taken over 20 years ago with an instamatic, so I apologize for the quality of some of them, but thought you might still like to see them) Here's Our Band (Ha!Ha!) Nice outfits! Don't let them kid you - I taught them everything they know! (Played alto sax before becoming drum major) On to Adventure Land, where we enjoyed a Steel Drum Band - it reminded me of the two Caribbean cruises I had recently taken. Shades of "The Song of Norway"! Pirates, was at the time, in addition to the Tiki Room - my favorite ride. This is me because I didn't eat anyting (HA!HA!) Actually, he's a poor soul trapped in "Pirates of the Caribbean." At least this guy's having a good time! A walk over to Fantasyland brings us to "It's a Small World" Hawaii! The picture Eve talked me into taking - I'm glad she did! "Hey, how about coming over to my place?" I noted that I felt this attraction was "really beautiful -you have to see it for yourself" This also was back in the day of tickets - so we couldn't ride things over and over again. I still have a few tickets left, as a matter of fact. Watching a parade [ 09-13-2002, 10:12 PM: Message edited by: tikibird ]

Re: Tikibird\'s April 1980 High School Band Trip Report: Hotel Royal Plaza - Completed Glad you are enjoying my little blast from the past! Yes, the comments in italics are the ones that I originally wrote in 1980! A Parade and Topiary Back in Adventureland, we ran into the Sunkist Orange bird. He was very cool - too bad he's not there anymore! Isn't he cute? That's Maryann, Shari, me and Eve with the Orange Bird. Time to watch the afternoon parade! M-I-C....... Isn't he cute (Seems I was really into "cute" back then!) Old School Pooh! What version are we on now? I know of this one, one from a couple of years ago (no hunny pot), and the current one. That's me! (Ha!Ha!) ("Ha!Ha! also seem to be huge!) The end of the parade I still can't get over how they trim those bushes! Next up An Evening at the Poly Luau

Re: Tikibird\'s April 1980 High School Band Trip Report: Hotel Royal Plaza - Completed An evening at the Poly Luau I can remember that my breath was taken away when I walked into the Poly lobby. I thought the fountain in the middle was one of the most beautiful things I had ever see, and immediately asked to have my picture taken by it. This it the life! I want one of these in my house! I remember enjoying the luau, but not being overly impressed with the food. Given current reviews, I guess things haven't changed too much. Eve, Schmitt and Me at the Luau Do they still give out those beads to everyone? Check it out! The Hawiaan Wedding Song Unfortunately, the other pics from this evening were too dark to scan, but one of my fellow saxophone players joined the dancers on stage - we had a lot of fun that evening, and I developed a love for the Poly that night that I hope to be able to share with the family on a future stay (but I'll need some REALLY good rates! ) They were equally impressed last trip when we went to Ohana's for dinner. Next up - Another day at the MK

Re: Tikibird\'s April 1980 High School Band Trip Report: Hotel Royal Plaza - Completed Another day at the MK I believe this was the day that we marched in the parade, since I was able to take pictures of it the previous day. Started the day waiting to get on the buses in the Hotel Royal Plaza, so took the opportunity to get some more pictures. Now is it just me, and don't we (the girls) look pretty good - but man, WHAT were those guys thinking!!!!!??? Too short, too tight shorts and PARTY socks! Fun in the sun babies - Eve, Me, Shari and Maryann What a motely crew! L to R - John, Marty, Cookie and Rob (SOMEBODY PLEASE CALL FASHION EMERGENCY!!!! ) Made it to the MK and found Pluto at the entrance. I had been jealous of this picture for years and years until I finally got my pic with him last December at the Ice Cream Social! He is one of the funnest characters to interact with. After fighting awhile, Shari and Eve FINALLY nabbed him! A view of Main St. circa 1980 Main St. USA The friends got me to go on Space Mountain and though I was really scared, I thought it was a great ride. It truly was ahead of it's time back in the day! Space Mountain - I still can't believe they dragged me on it - I loved it! We also went on the Jungle Cruise that day Jumbo taking a shower Next up - An obsession begins!

| Re: Tikibird\'s April 1980 High School Band Trip Report: Hotel Royal Plaza - Completed An obsession begins! This was the day, yes, this was the day - that we visited the Enchanted Tiki Room! I was just blown away. I think the reason I particularly like this attraction so much is that my favorite cartoons when I was little were the ones were all the toys/pets, etc. came to life and talked, danced, sang, etc. whenever the humans were out of sight. (kind of like Toy Story these days). The birds looked so lifelike, and I loved the singing flowers and tikis. The drumming part, along with the thunderstorm, was great. Still my favorite attraction today, even though the one in WDW has been updated (prefer the original version, still in DL - guess I'm a purist!) The Tiki Birds! Poly Want a Cracker? I find it interesting that in the next couple of pictures, I make reference not only to food, but shopping. I've changed alot since then (and this is a GOOD thing), however, some things just seem to remain a constant. Good Food, Good Shopping and the MK equals a really great time! Little known factoid - I was so impressed with the Crystal palace (it was a cafeteria at the time), and thought it was so classy, it was a big part of the reason I would have named either Craig or Chris "Crystal" had one of them been a girl! We ate dinner at the Crystal Palace - below. The Crystal Palace.... A VERY nice cafeteria - chocolate mousse! Below is one of my favorite pictures of all time - I was just having such a great time - my friends, feeling on top of the world being a senior, and in the MK - what more could a girl want (except sensible shoes - I was wearing FLIP FLOPS (which got cropped out of this shot??? I should be on that "Bad Shoes" page someone posted!) Miss Travel, USA! (Note the SHOPPING bag!) On the way out, I notice the horse trolley. I'm REALLY wanting to ride it! A nice horsie! A final walk down Main Street (that's Goon Squad up ahead) I unsuccessfully attempted to get even one of my friend to ride the trolley with me, but they were having none of it. Being the independent spirit I always have and will be, I rode it by myself, and I'm really glad I did! Little did I know at the time that this would be the last time I would see the MK for twenty long years. I'm glad I got to see one last time in style before we left for the day. And they thought I wouldn't ride on the horse car by myself - they didn't know what they were missing!
