| A tale of wonder on land and sea! This trip was a little unusual for us as we would be staying in 5 different locations which meant a lot of packing and unpacking – not one of my favourite occupations! Even though there are just the 2 of us that is still plenty of packing, especially as one part was a cruise and we had special stuff for that. Anyway, onto the tale of our trip of wonder on land and sea! Sunday October 27th and it is an unheard of hour in the morning – in fact it is even earlier as I forgot to put the clocks back overnight so we have got up an hour earlier than we needed too! Well, at least we will have plenty of time to get ready! The Taxi arrives on time and we head off for Gatwick Airport. I have never seen such a long queue to check in – the tail extends beyond the end of the queuing system and into the next area! We find our flight has been changed to a 777 which is smaller than the normal 747 but is actually a more comfortable plane. After almost 10 hours flight we reach Orlando and I begin to trip every security check there is – our baggage is almost last off the plane, we have to go through the agricultural x-ray then we both set off the walk through machine as we approach the terminal. I had to sit down, take my shoes off and be wanded while Andrew was just wanded. I kept peering over my shoulder to make sure no-one was running off with my handbag! Well we reached Baggage Claim B and were met by our Towncar Driver and had another long wait for our bags. Then we were off! A quick grocery stop later and we pulled into Disney’s Old Key West. Check-in was very quick and we had a perfect room – building 62 (right next to Hospitality House), 3rd Floor and a water view. It was exactly what we had asked for! One other weight off our minds was that the cruise documentation was waiting for us! We had had an email late on Friday saying they had sent the documents there but until they were in my hands I was not sure I believed it! We walked in to our room some 19 hours after we had got up that morning. The 5 hour time difference really hits you! We had a snack supper and went to bed as we had an early start the next morning – Magic Kingdom at 7.15am!! Monday morning early and we got up. This was fine as we were still working on UK time; it was later in the day we would be wilting. We got a cab over to the Contemporary and walked to MK where our friends, Elaine and Keith, were already there. It appeared we were going to be lucky on the numbers again with a total of 8 people on the tour (last time it was just 4!) Our guide was a relative youngster called Andy who had been trained up by our previous guide, Bob. It turned out that Bob had retired a couple of weeks earlier and was due to be given a lifetime achievement award. One of the last things he had done was train Roy Disney to drive the train for the re-dedication of the Roy O Disney engine. They gave Roy a scroll to commemorate the occasion and he sent it back to the engineers and asked them all to sign it so he could hang it in his office. What a great idea! The tour was great fun again and I would recommend it to anyone. After the tour finished we tried to track down the Annual Passholders 100 Years of Magic quiz and got sent from Guest services to the Photo Emporium and then between several cast members till we found someone who could find the little booklets for us. Perhaps we should have seen the warning signs then in their disorganisation but we started to go round and answer all the questions. It was time consuming but mostly interesting and the cast members were generally helpful: they would not tell you the answer but they gave you helpful hints. We paused for lunch at the Concourse Steak House at the Contemporary. The server seemed to have problems with most of the tables around us, including us. She bought one wrong dish and then the check had the wrong items on it. They also wanted to photocopy the discount bit from the annual passholders benefit guide as they did not know about it (this had only been going for 10 months!) The food was as good as usual though – very yummy. Andrew and I were wilting a bit by now so we agreed to leave Keith and Elaine doing the questions for another land while Andrew and I went for a nap before meeting up at AKL to have dinner at Jiko’s. One question that had been bugging us was ‘what items in Main Street come from Bridgeport Connecticut?’ We did not find out that day and I will leave you thinking on that one till a later part of the report! The bus stop for OKW had moved and was now as far away as it could possibly be. Fortunately we got to it and a bus pulled up so we got back fairly quickly. After a nap I went for a quick swim to refresh myself and then we got ready. We would be travelling to AKL via Downtown Disney so wanted to allow plenty of time. A bus to DD came very quickly so we allowed ourselves to have a little look round the new stores that had opened since we were last there. We then went and waited for an AKL bus. And waited. And waited. Finally one came and we got to AKL just in time and met up with Elaine and Keith again. Jiko’s is a wonderful restaurant. The noise and light level was low, the décor interesting and the service and food excellent. Andrew and I had the signature steak with macaroni cheese which was a delight. This was also a place where you got a free soft drink or glass of wine from the Disney club which we made use of. All in all a wonderful evening with great food and company. |

| Re: A tale of wonder on land and sea! Great trip report! We were thinking about doing the AP quiz, but decided against spending so much time on it. Now it sounds like I am glad we skipped it. I want to eat at the Concourse Steakhouse. You made the food sound so good, that I think next time we will do it. Maggie |

| Re: A tale of wonder on land and sea! Looking forward to reading more, but I didn't like the sound of the long queues at Gatwick. I don't want that on Sunday! | Re: A tale of wonder on land and sea! Wonder on Land with Friends Tuesday we had a slightly later start as Keith came to pick us up to go to a 9.30am character breakfast at Cape May café. We had never been there and it was Keith and Elaine’s first character meal experience – but not their last! There was Goofy, Chip and Dale and you could visit Minnie by the entrance. The buffet was fairly standard but very good. We took one of our Figaro’s (plush cat from Pinocchio) who always adds to the interaction with the characters – either Pluto or Goofy usually tries to eat him! The characters were very well behaved at this breakfast and we had great fun and some good pictures. One new thing we started here thanks to an idea in another post was to get the characters to sign postcards which had their pictures on. We were sending over 40 postcards so this added to the fun and we did it for adults or children – they all seemed to enjoy the idea and it was a lot less writing for us! And yes, wherever you saw the character the signature was always the same so you knew there was only one of each, they just moved about quickly…… As we left the breakfast we saw Art the greeter and went over to chat to him. Having read about him in many places it was a pleasure to finally meet him. Keith and Elaine had been staying at the beach Club for the previous week and this was the first time they had seen him. It transpired that he had been on his Honeymoon! We then went back to drop the car off and proceeded back to the Magic kingdom as we were determined to finish the quiz. We were all a bit hot and tired by the time we got it all done and went back to the photo emporium to find out what our little prize would be. After a bit of too-ing and fro-ing, we were sent to one of the places where they create a picture of you with characters. One person for each completed book (even though they did not check the answers). Keith had got his book back and we joined the queue which was going very slowly. While waiting I heard the cast member say ‘this is the worst shift on the rotation’ and she then proceeded to use the machine wrong and cause even more problems. We got to the front and Harmony (the cast member) proceeded to cause even more disharmony by refusing to let me have the book back. I said that after all the effort I had put into it I wanted to keep it as a souvenir. Her colleague told her to let me have it back but she would not until I said I would rather have it than a picture and she then almost threw it back at me with very bad grace. I thought about complaining but City hall don’t take complaints any more but give you a phone number to ring. I decided I had wasted enough time on the matter and to get on with enjoying the holiday. At least Keith and Elaine’s picture came out well! The trivia was interesting but more time consuming than we had expected. Oh – and the items that came from Bridgeport? They were the post boxes! We took a monorail over to Epcot because we had a PS at Le Cellier. We had time for a first look around and then gratefully sat down while we waited for our table at Le Cellier. The food was excellent as usual. A longer day than we were used to at that stage of a trip but it was fun to spend time with friends. |

| Re: A tale of wonder on land and sea! Wonder on land at Downtown Disney and Epcot The next day we had a calmer itinerary planned. We started off with Elaine and Keith joining us at OKW where they had a chance to see the wonderful one bedroom apartment and the amazing view we had. We then walked over to Olivia’s for breakfast. Andrew and I tried Ocie’s special poached eggs on sweet potato hash. Delicious! We were told that Ocie had worked at Disney since 1971 and at OKW since it opened. Her reputation for food was so good that Disney put some of her signature dishes on the menu at OKW. Keith then drove us a local shopping outlet where we bought a battery charger for our digital camera – we had forgotten to pack ours and knew that the battery charges would not last the whole trip. A great relief to be able to get one so easily. We went back to our room where Keith and Elaine helped fit me into the Maleficent outfit they had got for me to wear at the Halloween party on the cruise. It was a much better fit than we all expected and with a little pinning up at the front worked perfectly. One last job as we had not heard about transportation to the cruise the next day was to ring up. We tried the Mears number first who told us that they don’t pick up from OKW but I knew they did so we rang the cruise line number we had been given. They said it was no problem to transfer pick-up from the airport to OKW and told us where and when to meet. We took the bus to Downtown Disney and had a wander before going for lunch at Portobello Yacht Club – one of our favourites and a new experience for Elaine and Keith. Their starter pizzas just melt in your mouth and are great for sharing! After lunch it was off to Westside where most people went to look round virgin while I went into DisneyQuest for a cyber roller coaster ride and to check email. I think Disney have now blocked all popular sites for checking email which is a bit of a pity – this was the last occasion I managed to check email there. We then went back to OKW, took the car back to the Beach Club and hit Epcot for the Food and Wine Festival. Elaine and Keith do not drink but did want some of the plastic glasses as souvenirs so Andrew and I sampled a few wines as we went round and gave them the glasses. Conscious that we need to pack everything up as we were off on the cruise the next day we parted company (Keith kindly gave us a lift back to OKW). There was a phone message waiting for us for Melissa which she had left about 5pm saying that she had arranged provisionally for a car from Mears to pick us up to go to the cruise line. We rang back and left a message on her voice mail saying we had sorted it out ourselves earlier in the day and would be getting one of the normal buses. We had split our stuff into what we needed for the cruise and everything else and kept them in separate suitcases. Halloween morning we were up at 6am because we needed to sort out luggage and get to Disney studios in time for our last character meal with Elaine and Keith. There was no answer from bell services so we took the cases over (we were very close to Hospitality House!) and were able to leave behind everything and they would keep one case there till we came back from the cruise. Very convenient! We went to get a bus to the studios and there was a large party who were heading for Epcot so the driver radioed in and got agreement to take them too. He decided to go to Epcot first which seemed a very sensible idea as it was closer and we were not in a rush. We got to the studios at exactly the time agreed with Keith and Elaine and got in the breakfast queue. Our PS at Hollywood and Vine was for 8.30 which was the first one available. The time drew nearer and nearer and no sign of Keith and Elaine. Because we felt fairly tight on time as we wanted to be back at OKW before 11am, we were discussing our options if they did not turn up before the gates opened. Before we came to any conclusions they arrived, the gates opened and we went in to breakfast. Because we were so early it was not immediately full and we saw the characters several times each. We had a couple of Figaro’s with us and Elaine had an Eeyore and the characters seemed to have fun playing with them. There was Goofy, Chip and Dale, Minnie and Pluto. Pluto pretended to eat Figaro and did a party trick of putting him on his nose, throwing him up in the air and catching him in his mouth. It is a good job our cats are so tolerant! I had told Elaine that Minnie Mouse was always after my dh, Andrew. At this breakfast she was the worst ever and was gesturing that she loved Andrew and that he should leave me and go with her. Elaine’s face was a picture. She said “I didn’t believe you, but it’s TRUE!” Andrew and I could not stop laughing. Minnie also made a fuss of Figaro, because of course he is her cat in many shorts. |

| Re: A tale of wonder on land and sea! Wonder - all at Sea! We headed back to OKW and had the case we were taking with us added to the pile that were already there and went in search of the cruise line representative who we found in Papas Den. It did not seem like she was expecting us but it was not a problem and she added us to her list. I was slightly amused that her name was also Melissa (but not the Melissa we had had so many dealings with in trying to get the cruise organised!) We were hoping it would be Jeanne, Intercot’s very own cruise line driver, who would take us over to Port Canaveral but unfortunately it got changed at the last minute – but she was waiting for us to say ‘Hi’ as we arrived at the terminal which was an unexpected bonus! Check in was much easier than I expected. I had heard that the queues for non-US nationals could be very long but in the event it was short and quick. Time to take pictures of the model of the cruise ship and have our pictures taken with Captain Mickey! Then we joined the queue to board and had another picture taken by a sign with the date of the cruise (we did not buy this one!) and then walked up the gangway to the ship. As we walked on to the ship we were announced and clapped on. It was a very nice effect, especially as there had been a slight gap and there was absolute silence before we were announced. The clapping continued for us and several other people till we found our way to the lifts and headed for our stateroom on deck 7. After briefly admiring the stateroom (wow – it was big!) I checked the personal navigator to see where to get our Palo reservations. Sure enough it was in Wavebands so we headed there, got given a number and were told to sit down until our number was called. We sat down but I didn’t hear any numbers being called and using Andrew’s monocular like a telescope managed to work out just in time what was happening on the far side of the room and got to the place just as our number appeared. A few seconds later and we were all sorted. We had a small lunch in Parrot Cay because we had had a large breakfast but it was a long time to supper – we were on late sittings – and then we went back to the stateroom. It would have been nice to nap as we were exhausted but it was time for the fire drill! After that we had to go join the Sailaway party but found it packed and noisy. We went up to the deck above where we could look down and saw there were characters waiting inside a door to go on stage. I tried to take some pictures through the glass door and then Mickey opened the door to pose and a cast member said I could go in and take pictures so I did. Mickey, Chip and Pluto all posed for me and I got some good pictures. We did go back to the stateroom then for an hours nap. Then our case arrived and we got ready for dinner and into our Halloween costumes. I was Maleficent and Andrew was a ghoul. We did buy the official picture of us dressed up! Dinner tonight was at Triton’s and I was looking forward to this as the sound of this restaurant appealed to me. Having servers follow you is a good idea if servers are good. Our servers did not inspire us. First of all Yolande (assistant server) tried to hard sell the more expensive wine package instead of the one we had chosen. The main course was barely warm & a very pushy main server (Ganesh) came round & said / asked 'the food is perfect' & I said it was OK. I had waited long enough for the food but I could not accept that it was perfect. A bit later the head server (Sid - also from India) came & asked the table if there was anything that could be done to make even more magical in the future. I made a mild comment on the lines of ‘the food could be warmer’. Next thing I know is Ganesh is coming & berating me for having said this saying he could have got me a replacement if I had asked. Said he had had to wait for fish which was why it was cold (no one on our table having fish so must have been another table). Later the assistant server said was because I had steak med rare so it came out first. Sounded more likely than the other excuse. They went on for the rest of the evening & it really put a pall on events. Ganesh kept coming back and going on about it until Andrew very firmly told him to stop it and go away. We went to adult Halloween party but did not stay long as we had lost our enthusiasm. |

| Re: A tale of wonder on land and sea! Wonder at Sea - the real thing! We slept well and had a late breakfast at Tritons. We had the skillet of the day which was delicious. We were not getting off at Nassau but intended to do things on the boat. We had a Surial bath booked for the two of us (yes, one of those!) which was good fun and at only $69 comparatively cheap. The only thing missing was a clock so you could make sure you did everything you wanted - exfoliate, shower, face mask, mud, steam, shower, massage oil / moisturise! More by luck than judgement we got timing right. On to a light lunch then wine tasting from stem to stern at $12 a head an hour well spent - informative, humorous and tasty! We are impressed by the skill that breaks open a Champagne bottle by rubbing a glass on the join but can't understand why anyone should want to do it. After that we caught the end of who wants to be a mouseketeer (wish we had been early enough to have had a chance to be a contestant, it looked great fun!) Next up was an Ocean wrap. Pricy but incredible - good for the skin & very relaxing. We were not looking forward to dinner because of the servers. Apart from being extra obsequious & all of them asking if my food was warm enough they were ok until very end. Ganesh came over & said we would get a survey & could make or break him & Yolande. Talk about making guests uncomfortable! In the end for that section of survey we followed Thumper's father's advice. Saturday was Castaway Cay day when we had decided to go take a look. We also had several photos to get in our photo package (we had bought a package of 10 – you pick out photos that they take and then you can pick and choose if they take better ones – or increase the number you want to buy). A pause for a moment of praise here - Andrew had gone down the night before while I was in the spa & because he can't see had trouble finding the pictures & a cast member helped him. When I went to get today's pictures I could not find them all & went to ask if they were all out. The cast member had put all the ones he had seen to one side to help Andrew out. He recognised Andrew from the pictures I had found & explained what he had done. Andrew & I were both impressed! Back to castaway cay. We went to the post office with the postcards we had done & found only 55c to US or UK. We had our picture taken with Chip & Dale before we went in & then when we came out Captain Hook & Mr Smee had taken their place so we had a picture with them too! We walked up to the family beach & had a picture with Mickey. He was determined to tell us he had seen us before but we could not follow his sign language as to where. The queue grew & the cast member came to our rescue & translated - it was Epcot Mickey had seen us at! The picture finally got taken & when we picked it up it was unbelievably good with the Wonder in the background. We took the tram to Serenity Bay where Andrew took a seat while I waded out to sea for a bit. Then we returned to the ship & I had a swim in the quiet pool (all by myself!). Then a light lunch on the ship & watching the Disney Dreams show which was great fun. Andrew stayed to see the disembarkation talk while I packed the case & got the last photos. The final event of the evening was dinner at Palo's which was a highlight of the cruise. The food & service was exquisite - hot shrimp cocktail as a starter & rack of lamb for me, Portobello mushroom then fillet for Andrew. We both have the chocolate souffle for dessert which was divine. All in all a lovely way to end the cruise. We had to collect our passports & go through immigration at 6am - a very early start but one that went smoothly & quickly. We grabbed some of the Danish, juice & coffee & finished packing. We were on the late breakfast but decided not to bother. We still had to hand over the tips (we discovered they had been included in our package, perhaps fortunately for the servers!) We arrived at the spot & Sid greeted us with 'you are on late sitting, you can't come in'. We explained we did not want breakfast but had the tips. Slight change in attitude! We wanted to disembark even though Andrew said there was only going to be one bus to resorts, according to the disembarkation talk. There were lots to the airport! We get out & are led to a small mears van, one couple later & we head off & reach Old Key West resort by 9.15am. To our surprise & delight our room was ready so we got in by 9.30, did some unpacking & had a nap to catch up from our early start. We had lunch at Olivias. We then took a bus to Downtown Disney. We bought snacks from the Gourmet Pantry & took boat back to OKW - beautiful sunset! |

| Re: A tale of wonder on land and sea! Wonder on Land - Meets! Monday was going to be a busy day – two Intercot meets and we had the car to pick up! The first meet was to be at the Studios for WWTBAM. We got fast passes and then went to look around a little. I did some pin trading with a cast member from a store who was visiting and she was kind enough to give me the 9/11 memorial pin that the store had done (not part of a trade, she just gave it to me) and I was very grateful and having seen the pin thought Disney had done it well. Back to WWTBAM and no-one else turns up (I had an email apology from someone later who had been unwell) but we head in anyway and have great fun with both of us getting on the leader boards (I was 2nd). The pre-film with Regis had gone but we did not know why until we realised that ABC did not show the programme any more! We wander round the shops and have lunch at the Backlot express. We now had the convoluted journey to get to Downtown Disney where we were picking our car up. Direct buses did not start till 3pm so we had to go via a resort. We had a full size car this time thanks to a special offer from Trailfinders. We went and did some food shopping – the new Publix by the Quality Outlet Mall is very convenient. We pop up to Belz and the Rockport outlet where we get shoes for Andrew. Then it is off home to change and get ready for the next meet – an Intercot moderator meet at Rainforest Café in Downtown Disney. The food was really good & the company excellent! It was nice to see Becky again and to meet the famous Ed for the first time! The next morning we go to the member update and get given 10th Anniversary pins and I picked up info on finance etc which should help me with queries on the DVC board! We were a bit late arriving so had sat on the floor at the back. After it finished we had a pleasant surprise because someone came rushing up to us – it was Pat and her husband who we keep running into at OKW. Well, Pat anyway, as last time we saw her she was with her daughter not her husband! I wanted to visit a new Mall today – the Millennia Mall – as I had seen information about its grand opening in the Orlando sentinel online. We found it more easily than we expected just off 4 (driving on that road reminded me of why I usually try to avoid it – LOL). The Mall was very pretty and quite interesting but pricy. There was a Macy’s which was fun but also shops like Tiffany and Cartier. We went to the Premium outlets after and had a brief look round and then home for a siesta. I go for a swim in the quiet pool near the room and we spend the evening on snacks and watching videos (thanks to Keith for recording all those travel programs about Disney!). For us a quiet evening in relaxing is all part of the holiday. The next day was also a shopping day – we wanted to make the most of having the car. The weather was not good so we decided to go to Florida Mall as it was nearer than West Oaks and driving in heavy rain is not that much fun. I find some perfect shoes for work in their Rockport store – sensible but smart. We then drove down to the Contemporary to use their business centre as Andrew had a long email he needed to send related to work. We are recognised by one of the cast members and nearly not charged at all but it was a worthwhile job done. That evening we went to Captain Jack’s. It now promotes itself as the smallest restaurant in Walt Disney World. It is much improved (and a little extended) in some ways over the years but we reminisce about the time I could sit at the bar just having a drink waiting for Andrew. I had 2 Lobster Tails which were Yummy. We decide to go Animal Kingdom the next morning – this is one park I think it helps to take a car to. Andrew’s disabled parking permit was useful here as we could park very near the entrance and they had lots of disabled places. We went to the first showing of the Festival of the Lion King which was very enjoyable. We noticed the ‘bird’ dancers no longer ‘flew’ and wondered if this was permanent. We then went through the Asia walking trail. As it was a nice cool day it was a good day to go to Animal kingdom! We then drove to Disney Studios, where much to Floppy Figaro’s delight we saw Gepetto in the New York Street and had our picture taken with him. We do Star tours and One Man’s dream and then head home to do a bit of packing as tomorrow we go to stay with our native Floridian friend for the weekend! We went to Pebbles at Crossroads for dinner which was as good as ever and had added new items to the menu. We also went into the Hallmark shop at Crossroads which has an amazing collection of Disney Stuff – well worth a look at even if you don’t want to buy something! |

| Re: A tale of wonder on land and sea! Great TR! I really enjoy your writing style. I can relate to having bad waiters on a cruise. It was the same for us last year on Carnival. Our waiter was from India too and was snooty and rude. Luckily our cruise was free as yours was, so we didn't feel like we were paying for it anyway. |

| Re: A tale of wonder on land and sea! Wonder on land - and lake! Friday morning was sunny and clear and we checked out and went to the Festival of the Masters on West Side. There was a lot to see and it was fascinating – well worth a visit if you are visiting Disney at the right time. It was in its 27th year! We then set off to our friend Mary’s stopping off for lunch on the way at Damon’s on International Drive. We had Chicken tender salad with spicy sweet and sour sauce. It was excellent. Mary’s directions to her Condo were excellent until we reached the building and realized we had no idea which floor or number her place was – LOL! We buzz her flat and she tells us where to go – it is a lovely apartment. We go downtown for the evening. Mary is a member of the Citrus Club. It is on an 18th floor so has magnificent views. Unfortunately there was a wedding on so we could not stay to eat but cruise around and find a restaurant overlooking what used to be Orlando’s most popular entertainment attraction – a fountain that changes colour in a lake. The food was excellent and very filling. Saturday morning and we drive first to see the puppy Mary is buying and then to visit Daytona Beach. The Cavalier King Charles puppies are sweet. Kelly shows as well as breeds dogs and is often hired to show other people's animals. The father of this litter is No.2 in the country. We drive on to Daytona. At first, we find a sign prohibiting driving on the beach and assume this is the tide. We find a fun beach burger bar for lunch and then walk onto the beach. We get photos. By now, cars are driving and we find a way onto the beach. There is a booth with a sign for a $5.00 charge but it in unmanned. We drive up and down the beach then go home. We realise we are not quite in preferred style because we do not have either a motorcycle or a truck. The aging bikers now use 3 wheel motorbikes. Today is Mary’s birthday and that evening she is having a party for her friends. They are a nice bunch of people and it is a fun party. One of the guests has a Table Tennis table in their apartment in the same block and some of us go up and play a few games. I play against Mary’s work colleague (another Keith) who is trying to get revenge for losing at Mini Golf on a previous visit. Unfortunately for Keith I also have a competitive streak and manage to beat him (just!). Before we know it, it is 1.30am and we all decide to head for bed. The next morning we are treated to a ride around the lake at the back of the apartments. It is massive and the boat ride is great fun. After the night before a relaxing afternoon is called for. We had been invited to go and play table Tennis again that evening which we were happy to accept. I had not played for 15 years or so but it is enjoyable. Oh, and Keith lost again – LOL!
