Glad to see the start of your trip report. Its been fun reading about the start to your trip. And as others have said, the longer and more detailed the better.

Looking forward to your next installment (even though I know what decision you made ).

Re: The Brits at the Beach Club - a 19 night special (FINALLY FINISHED)

I wanted to create one of those poll posts, something along the lines of:

Did Cheryl or did Cheryl not do Splash Mountain?

Alas, I apparently do not have permission to post polls.

Anyway, my vote is - You did.

Love your report. This is the first I've heard of the veggie burger at Beaches 'n' Cream so now I'm psyched.
Glad you got your big, cheap American deodorant. Let me know when you run out, I spend an average of 1.5 hrs per week at Wal-Mart.

Re: The Brits at the Beach Club - a 19 night special (FINALLY FINISHED)

Day 3 – Wednesday 18 December, part two

OK, so I’m at the entrance to Splash Mountain. Now what? Well, I’m being offered a back seat, which can’t be too bad. It’s got to be better than a front one surely? I know if I had been offered a front seat, I certainly wouldn’t have gone, on it. So before I know it, I’m in one of those logs, dreading what the next few minutes hold and silently cursing DH.

As we went up the first incline, I began to not-so-silently curse DH. I think he was told on a number of occasions that he was a dead man, the minute we got off SM, but then the first drop wasn’t too bag and I was suddenly in the midst of this great story about Brer Rabbit. What a happy, feel good ride it is… well apart from the drops that is.

Someone on the boards warned me about the drop in the dark. Frankly, it didn’t worry me, as every time we dropped, just in case we were at the final drop, I would shut my eyes and kept them shut until the drop was over. As for the final drop, before we went on, we asked a CM about it and she told me that it was over before you knew it. And she was right. Just as I started to get really scared, it was splash down time and it was all over.

So would I do it again? Well, yes I think I would actually. Maybe next time I’ll enjoy it more as I won’t be worrying so much about what’s around the corner. I’m pleased I did and thanks to everyone who encouraged me to go on this. You were right – I made DH’s day and I now have one of those official photos to prove my bravery to everyone! DH even bought me an Eeyore sweatshirt to thank me for trying SM out.

Our official photo, proof that I tried Splash Mountain and lived to tell the tale. I wish I looked happier in the shot though!

Now, keep in mind at this point that we were not meant to be spending all day today at the MK, as the plan was for us to go shopping and to stock up on jeans and trainers. Well, we were heading for the exit, when we saw the Hall of Presidents was about to start, so we thought we’d see what it was like. Neither of us had seen this since the early 1980’s, but it was nothing like either of us remembered. DH thought all the presidents spoke to each other more and I don’t remember the film at the start.

It certainly wasn’t as boring as some people have suggested, but as we left, there was one woman fast asleep! What did surprise me was hearing some of the audience booing when George W. Bush was introduced. From a British perspective, that didn’t seem a very American thing to do at something like this, regardless of your views on politics. OK, so it could’ve been foreigners in there, but I suspect it wasn’t…

After a few more character signings (they really were everywhere), we finally made it back to the BC. DH suggested we should get off the bus at the Swan and walk the rest of the way back, which was a lovely idea. It allowed me to take a look at the menu at Palio, a possibility for dining later this trip.

When we got back to the BC, it was laundry time (yes, already). As the quiet pool at the BC was closed for refurbishment and we wanted to swim while our washing was being dealt with, we went over to the YC quiet pool. Getting into the pool was quite a shock. It wasn’t heated and was a lot colder than Stormalong Bay yesterday. I think we’ll stick to SB in the future!

The rest of the afternoon (the following two and a half hours anyway) was taken up with getting our membership to the DVC sorted out. After three years of thinking about it, we are now members with the Beach Club Villas as our home resort.

It feels good to have finally made the commitment and it will probably have paid for itself after only three trips. The only problem is that we now have to take another Disney vacation before August 2004, which wasn’t in our plans. Still, I think I can live with it and it is regularly said on the boards that you should start planning your next Disney vacation before your current one ends. Well, three days into our nineteen night extravaganza and that’s what we’d started to do!

For dinner, we ended up at Beaches and Cream again and had pretty much exactly the same as the night before. The total cost (which I did mean to add in before now, but I’ve only just found all the receipts!) was $34 including tip. I think that’s reasonable for a very good quality meal.

Beaches & Cream Me DH
Food 9.5 9.5
Service 9.5 10
Atmosphere 8.5 8
Value for money 10 9

Average: 9.25

The weather today was sunny and hot, with temperatures in the high 70’s. By 11 a.m., I was burning without sunscreen.
The best thing today was buying into the Disney Vacation Club.
The worst thing today was how rushed we felt at Cindy’s during breakfast.
The funniest thing today was DH running after the characters.
Today I tried Splash Mountain
And the result was it wasn’t as bad as I’d feared and the story was lovely.
The most magical moment today was being the first people into Magic Kingdom this morning.

Pedometer: 5.8 miles

Next: Epcot and where are all the crowds at Test Track?

Re: The Brits at the Beach Club - a 19 night special (FINALLY FINISHED)

Day 4 – Thursday 19 December, part one

We were thinking of going to Universal today, but we decided not to and head for Epcot instead. In the end, we never made it to Universal at all. We were only going to visit the original park, as there are just too many thrill rides at Islands of Adventure, making it a waste of time for both of us, as we wouldn’t go on them. We hadn’t bought a ticket for Universal and I kept thinking a one day pass was a lot of money, considering how many things were shut for rehab – I think the count was three. As there are three new attractions due to open next year, we figured a visit to Universal on our next vacation would be a better bet, particularly as I fancy seeing the Shrek 4D with smell!

Anyway, for both of us, Epcot is our favourite park and although it’s wonderful to walk down Main Street USA, I love being in Epcot. I’m one of those who doesn’t feel they’re truly at Disney until they’ve seen Spaceship Earth.

We wandered though the UK and Canada this morning from International Gateway (and I mean wandered, no quick walk!). We could hear what we thought was Test Track running, so we went there first, hoping for a short queue and were a bit surprised to see a 15 minute wait posted at 8.55 a.m. Wow, we must be late getting there, to have a queue already. No, apparently not. When we mentioned to that to the CM, she changed it to 0 minute wait. We still hadn’t quite clicked as to why we weren’t being allowed on to it when there was no wait there…

As we stood there, I jokingly said to DH that it felt as if we were the only two people in the whole park. I don’t think I was far wrong, as suddenly a crowd was running towards us and I realised that we were, in fact, the first in line for Test Track, so we were the first people on the ride that day!

I tried this in 2000 and really didn’t think I’d like (are you seeing any parallels to Splash Mountain here?), but I loved Test Track. This gives me such a rush, but after we came off this morning, we’d almost had too much exhilaration, so we went on Universe of Energy to calm down. I love this ride, although I don’t think I could do it more than once per trip, as some of the story gets a bit wearing towards the end.

We had a quick look in Innoventions and were fascinated by the Stories Behind Epcot. I only guessed one of the answers correctly – not very good! We’d already looked at Mission : Space and had been surprised by how ready it looks now. We were disappointed by the launch centre at Innoventions, as there wasn’t really any information about the ride or any sneak previews, as we were hoping, just lots of detail about space in general. Not what we’d expected.

After a quick interlude to find yet more characters and looking for our leave a legacy image (we found it without help this time), it was time for one of my favourite rides, Spaceship Earth. DH commented that it needed updated. Yes maybe, but a new ride being put in its place – no! It’s a magical ride and to get rid of it would be a crying shame.

From there, we toured all of World Showcase and I videoed and photographed each country in turn, again something I hadn’t done before. My previous photos had been a bit hit and miss, with some countries featured very prominently and others not at all.

We had lunch at the Kringla og Kafe in Norway and I had the smoked salmon and scrambled egg sandwich and DH had the turkey one. I would certainly recommend this as a good pit stop to anyone, providing you’ve got a slightly more adventurous taste. Our sandwiches were wonderful and very reasonably priced, which is always an unexpected pleasure at Disney! My salmon sandwich was $5.59 and DH’s turkey sandwich was $4.59.

Kringla
Quality good
Size of portions good
Value for money good to excellent

Also at Norway, we went on Maelstrom and could tell the changes there. As well as the alterations to the queuing area, we thought that the ride was shorter and it was certainly rougher. Now neither of us remembered the cinema at the end of the ride, we both remembered watching the film on a small TV set as you got off the boat and if you didn’t want to, you went straight through into the shop, but we were later told by a Norwegian CM that they didn’t change that part of the ride at all, which left us baffled.

When we got to Italy, we got a lovely surprise – a display by masked Venetian dancers who then posed for photos with us afterwards. The costumes and masks were beautiful and have always been favourites of mine since we visited Venice just over a year ago.

Masquerade

In France, I got a huge ice cream for just $3, which melted extremely fast in the heat (by now, it was in the 80’s), so I had a real battle to get it eaten before the sun got it!

Next: shopping calls, Chef Mickey’s and our unintentional tour of the Seven Seas Lagoon….

Congrats on braving Splash Mountain, and for being first on Test Track - way cool! Kudos also on the DVC purchase. So sad that you have to go back so soon, though! Enjoyed these installments, ready for the next....

Re: The Brits at the Beach Club - a 19 night special (FINALLY FINISHED)

Day 4 – Thursday 19 December, part two

It was so hot by now that we wanted to take advantage of Stormalong Bay, so we headed back to the Beach Club. When we got to SB, we were asked for our ID cards and were then given green wristbands (the colour changes on a daily basis), so we wouldn’t be asked again if we were resort guests. They told us they’ve had a lot of locals using SB and they want to stamp it out. As I did a lot of swimming during this session, I wimped out of the waterslide for today. Maybe later in the vacation…

Finally we headed out shopping to stock up on jeans and trainers. We bought four pairs of jeans for $115. Now at home, we’d be lucky to get two pairs for that price! With the trainers, we spent about the same amount on four pairs and also got 18 pairs of socks. Again, we wouldn’t be able to buy two pairs of trainers in the UK for that price.

We also hit the Character Outlet store at the Orlando Premium Outlet mall, following advice from Elaine (Bert and Sully on the boards). What a great find! I got an Eeyore t-shirt for just $8 and DH got a 100 years of magic polo shirt for $19, both at least half the price they’d be in Disney. But best of all for me, as a beanie collector, was getting Pilgrim Eeyore for just $5. He was one of the few missing from my collection at that time and I was delighted to see him!

We then picked up our first three films from Wal-Mart, after getting lost again on our way out there. What is it with us? It was lovely to have our pictures back so soon into our holiday and to know that they’ve come out well.

After a quick pit-stop at the BC (and a chance to grab some more of that nice hot apple cider!), we were off to Chef Mickey’s. We met a woman at MK yesterday, while queuing for the characters, who told us how good it was and DH decided he wanted to go, so I sorted out a PS. I couldn’t believe it when DH told me he’d always anted to eat at CM’s. Well, why didn’t he say? I’d have sorted it out had I known!

We both loved the buffet, a great selection of food, even for veggies and there were so many characters. Chip, Dale, Minnie and Mickey all toured the tables, while Goofy, in his Santa outfit, and Donald posed for photos at the entrance. We both thought Mickey looked great in his chef’s outfit, better than in his normal “uniform”.

The singing and napkin waving was really fun and lovely to catch on video – even DH is on hubby, waving his napkin around, but of course I couldn’t as I was videoing!

About the only thing which let this meal down was our server, who wasn’t very quick off the meal and at one point I was gasping for more to drink, but we just weren’t getting our refills. The bill, including quite a low tip, came to $57.

Chef Mickey’s Me DH
Starter 9.5 10
Main course 8.5 10
Dessert 7 N/A
Atmosphere 8.5 8
Service 6 5
Value for money 8.5 9

Average: 8.19

Now, we wanted to catch the Electric Water Pageant and we were told by guest services at the Contemporary that it would reach the Contemporary by 10 p.m., so we travelled to the Polynesian, where we saw the Pageant briefly from the Monorail. By the time we got down to the beach at the Polynesian, the Pageant was finished, but we sat down to watch the fireworks.

Of course, these were the ones put on for MVMCP and I never realised how many there were, outside of the MK during the party. It was useful to see it, as we then knew for the following night, when we were at the party. They really did spread out across the whole of the lake. The only way to appreciate how many there were and how wide they went was to watch them from one of the resorts and I think we probably had the best view going on the Poly beach.

We thought we’d then catch the monorail to the Grand Floridian and see the Pageant. Wrong! It was disappearing just as we got to the beach, so it was back on the monorail to go back to the Contemporary. We’d definitely catch it there, as it was nowhere near 10 p.m. and sure enough we were at the Contemporary marina by 9.50 p.m., but we were obviously given dud information by guest services, as the Pageant had finished just a minute earlier and was trundling off to Wilderness Lodge. Well, having pursued it through three locations and failed to see it, I wasn’t going to follow it any further. From the glimpses we’d seen of it, we were determined to see it properly at some point during this vacation…

When we got back to the Beach Club, we commented on how quiet the car park was. Although it seemed to be busy when we arrived, there now seemed to be very few newspapers outside bedroom doors in the mornings. I know, from previous experience, that we needed to make the best of Disney, before that all changed in the run up to Christmas!

The weather today was hot and sunny, with temperatures into the 80’s.
The best thing today was riding Test Track.
The worst thing today was how long it took us to find Wal-Mart.
The funniest thing today was the napkin waving at Chef Mickey’s.
Today we tried Chef Mickey’s
And the result was it was great fun, with good food and lots of characters.
The most magical moment today was seeing the masked Venetian dancers in Italy.

Pedometer: 12.6 miles !!!

Next: MGM, my first glimpse of Eeyore and a special delivery!

Re: The Brits at the Beach Club - a 19 night special (FINALLY FINISHED)

Day 5 – Friday 20 December, part one

We woke up to thunder and torrential rain, but that was good news, because it was forecast for this evening and tonight was our night for MVMCP. Well, the advice is always to go the parks, even if it’s raining, so we made for MGM, with a variety of indoor attractions. As we entered the park, the temperatures dropped and for a moment, DH seriously considered the idea of buying a sweatshirt! Now that would’ve been an expensive start to the day!

After a breakfast of banana nut muffin for DH and coffee cake for me, which tasted of cinnamon and not coffee, at the Starring Rolls Bakery, we took the Great Movie Ride. Some of the youngsters on board were terrified by the Alien section and I can’t say I blame them! We got the female gangster version and both the CM’s gave the ride their all, really making it for us.

When we came out, we grabbed a couple more characters, including Cruella de Ville, who approved of me getting DH to go and get the autographs!

I wanted to do Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, so that was our next stop, but neither of us got anywhere near the top ten at any stage. We were both a bit disappointed with it, as the questions were (understandably I guess) very much aimed at an American audience, so we didn’t have a chance on some. Still, I’m glad we saw it, it was very entertaining, particularly the “phone a complete stranger” bit, especially as he then gave the wrong answer!

Then it was One Man’s Dream and all the way through it, I couldn’t help but think what a wonderful tribute it was to Walt, but also how awful it was that there has never been such a tribute at WDW until now. I do hope this goes on to become a permanent feature, as it was fascinating, particularly the models of some parts of the parks we know now so well. I certainly learnt a lot about Walt’s life through visiting it.

By now, it was Fastpass time for Voyage of the Little Mermaid, a lovely show. Again something which seemed to be shorter than we remembered, or maybe we just enjoyed it more this time around and that made the time go quicker?

As we came out, I spotted that there was only a short queue for Eeyore, so I just had to go and say hello to him, even though we’re having both breakfast and dinner with him tomorrow for my 30th birthday! Then we were done with MGM and caught the boat back to the BC. This is a lovely, peaceful way to travel, but it also struck me as a very slow way to do things, something I’d not been conscious of before. You do occasionally wish there was a direct bus running between MGM and the Epcot resorts.

Back at the BC, my package of five Eeyore tops from Disney Store dot com had finally turned up, nine days after I’d ordered it back in the UK. I was beginning to worry by this time, so I was relieved to see it! Now it was starting to feel like my birthday, with a special delivery for me, albeit one I’d already paid for!

Our plan was to go over to the MK and catch both the afternoon parade and then the Christmas one during MVMCP. We managed to miss one bus from the BC, it was leaving just as we headed for the bus stop, so we then had a 15 minute wait before the next one arrived. This meant we didn’t get to MK until 2.40 p.m. and I figured by then we’d have missed out on a decent spot for the parade, but we walked in and straight away we snagged a prime spot for the parade, just across from the Emporium and next to the station.

The whole place seemed deserted, with only a few people staked out for the parade. While we were waiting, we were asked if we wanted to take part in some research for Disney, which would involve writing a short trip report… well, after this one, that should be easy, so I said yes straight away. The e-mail with the instructions has arrived, but it’s still on my “to do” list.

The parade itself was great, but short, lasting less than 10 minutes, according to the clock on our video camera. I loved the way it started with Walt and the phrase “it all started with a mouse” and then went on to tell the story of Disney through their most famous films, a very well thought out theme to this parade, which fitted into 100 years of magic perfectly.

After getting a few more characters, we went over to Fantasyland and found Tweedledum and Tweedledee, what fun they were! We’d brought in some fold up seats with us for the evening parade (everyone kept looking at us with envy, thinking how well organised we were!) and before we knew it, they’d pinched the seats and made themselves at home on them. They played with the video cameras, blowing raspberries into it, made DH tie both their shoelaces and then one (I couldn’t tell which one) refused to give the seat back, clutching on to it for ages. This went on for about 5 minutes and I got some great video footage and photos, but I did feel sorry for those in the queue behind us, they must’ve wondered if they were ever going to get to see them!

Tweedledum and Tweedledum enjoy DH's company!

Then it was time for a Disney tradition, It’s a Small World. No matter how much DH moans about it, I always feel we should ride it, it’s just so fun and happy and I swear they’ve finally listened to all the comments and toned that irritating song down! As a result, I decided to video some of it. In future, I can now threaten DH with that!!

Next: dinner at the Liberty Tree Tavern, our first ever MVMCP and I re-live my childhood!

Re: The Brits at the Beach Club - a 19 night special (FINALLY FINISHED)

Day 5 – Friday 20 December, part two

After a quick ride on Snow White, the plan was that we’d go to the Liberty Tree Tavern for dinner, well that’s what we thought anyway. The ride broke down, just as we were at the point where Snow White went into the forest. The lights came on and spoilt the whole illusion, it really looked old and pathetic with the lights on, which was a great shame. They kept trying to get it going again and eventually succeeded on their third attempt, but I did have visions of us having to be taken off it.

The Liberty Tree Tavern was a superb meal. I was impressed with the vegetarian platter they served up and we both went back for seconds of the salad. We had a very attentive server, Carrie, who couldn’t have looked after us better. The characters played up again, very much the theme of this trip. We’ve found them so much more fun this year than before. The total bill for the meal, including tip, was $55.

Liberty Tree Tavern Me DH

Main course 8 9
Service 9 8.5
Atmosphere 9 9

We thought, after we came out of the LTT, that we’d be herded towards Tomorrowland before MVMCP, as that’s where everyone who was still in the park was waiting for the evening to start, but no, we were allowed to videotape and photograph what we wanted, so we wandered around Liberty Square, the castle and finally down towards Fantasyland, just as it headed for 7 p.m.

We weren’t even asked once by anyone to see our wristband. First stop was Fantasyland for our complimentary family photo. I know, it’s not really complimentary, as we’d all paid to be here, but it’s a nice touch, all the same.

Our official MVMCP snap

Earlier on in the afternoon, Peter Pan’s Flight had had a 30 minute wait, the first real queue we’d seen since we’d been here. As we hadn’t waited more than five minutes for anything so far this vacation, we decided we weren’t about to start with Peter Pan. When we walked past just after 7 p.m., there was no wait, so we walked straight on.

Next, I went on Dumbo on my own, something I’d never do during the day, because a) it was too busy and b) I’d be too embarrassed to be riding without a child! It was great fun, better than I’d remembered from when I was a kid. Actually I lie about that bit, the last time I rode Dumbo I was 15 and I forced my mum to take me on it! She couldn’t believe it!

On Dumbo, aged 30

We tried to get into Mickey’s Twas the Night Before Christmas show (which we’d never managed to see two years ago), but we were too late for the first show and by the time we got there, it was standing room only. I guess that’s what happens if you go on Dumbo!

Instead, we went on the Jungle Cruise, which was so much better at night. It doesn’t look as naff as it does in the daytime. Don’t get me wrong, this used to be one of my favourite rides at Disney when I was younger, but it’s showing its age now and desperately needs a rehab. Carl, our guide, was hysterical and really took the mickey out of the ride, but in a nice way and his jokes were so bad, they had to be heard to be believed.

We were going to catch the second parade of the evening, but as we walked through Frontierland, we found a prime spot, just a few minutes before it started, so we took our places. It must be our lucky day today for parades! This one was wonderful and had been changed from two years ago – Dumbo was a new addition, as was Stitch as Santa. The music was still the same though…

By the time the parade had passed by, we realised it was nearly 9 p.m. and time for our Passporter meet back in Main Street USA. We stopped off to get our hot chocolate and cookies, as we were cold from having sat still for the previous half hour and then we had to contend with the parade, which was still passing through Main Street, but we made it with a few minutes to spare.

We briefly met up with Jessica (Disneyjessi) and her family and then DH spotted more characters we hadn’t got yet and he was off. Of course, I have to be there to act as official photographer as well and we then lost Jessica and didn’t see them again after that.

The fireworks were about to start, so we went upstairs at Main Street station to watch them. From last night, we knew to look everywhere for fireworks and it was truly amazing to see the whole sky lit up. We were able to tell other people to watch everywhere and not to leave when it got to the false ending, exactly what we’d been told the night before.

Next we saw Celebrate the Season at the Castle, but for me, the best show was Mickey’s Twas the Night Before Christmas, which we finally got to see at 10.30 p.m. The Rockin’ Reindeer was by far the best bit, but by the end of it, I was getting very cold. The wind really was bitter, so we decided to call it a night, before the second parade of the evening finished and all hell broke loose, as everyone headed for the exit.

I think we did the right thing, as we easily made the first bus for the Yacht and Beach Club and only had a couple of minutes to wait for one. I dread to think what it would’ve been like had we waited a bit longer before leaving….

The weather today was hot and sunny and in the 70’s during the day, but temperatures dropped rapidly during MVMCP.
The best thing today was MVMCP, worth every cent we paid for it.
The worst thing today was how cold it got during MVMCP.
The funniest thing today was both Tweedledum and Tweedledee and the evening Jungle Cruise.
Today we tried MVMCP
And the result was it was a truly magical event.
The most magical moment was meeting Eeyore!

Pedometer: 11.0 miles

Next: I turn 30 in style with Eeyore and a helicopter flight!

I feel like I'm shivering right along with you after the parade. I even felt warmed up when you caught a quick bus back to YC/BC after the fireworks.

I love your report and look forward to each and every installment.
