Re: Fun, flowers and firsts

It’s a week to go and it’s all change, but change for the better!

Dates:
Wednesday 28 April – Friday 14 May 2004
Adventurers:
Me, Cheryl (31) and
DH, Mark (38)
with appearances from a number of other Passporters along the way!
Resorts:
Animal Kingdom Lodge (Wednesday 28 April – Sunday 2 May)
Beach Club Villas (Sunday 2 May – Wednesday 6 May)
Disney Cruise (Wednesday 6 May – Sunday 9 May)
Beach Club Villas (Sunday 9 May – Friday 14 May)
Celebrations:
Our first ever Disney Cruise, our first time at the Animal Kingdom Lodge and our first ever visit to WDW in May to see the Flower and Garden Festival.

What’s the saying? “The best laid plans of mice and men” – well it’s certainly a phrase we use over here anyway! A week out and we were all set – planned beyond any other previous Disney vacation and I guess maybe that was like a red rag to a bull, something was bound to change – and so it did… but very much for the better.

About a week earlier, I’d picked up on a rumour at Screamscape that there’d be a summer press preview at Disney World on Tuesday 4 and Wednesday 5 May. As more replies were added to the thread, speculating on what would be announced, I made a throwaway comment on the boards that if Jennifer and Dave weren’t able to attend, then there was a former journalist who’d be more than happy to stand in for them and I thought no more of it.

That was until I was asked by Dave if I did want to go on their behalf! My eyes nearly popped out of my head when I read the message and I must’ve read it about three or four times before I finally took in its contents. I told Mark and his reaction was instant – “go for it, it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity”, which was good, as there would only be room for me to attend and he’d be left to his own devices if I did go along.

Having to wait for a confirmed schedule from Disney over the next couple of days was torture, but then the confirmation came back that the majority of the events would be taking place on 5 May and the line-up included an afternoon at the World’s newest resort – Saratoga Springs, the latest offering from the Disney Vacation Club. Well, as co-guide to the DVC forum on the boards, I couldn’t say “no” to that offer, as I was desperately hoping to have a chance to get a sneak peek of the resort! The day also included breakfast at the Brown Derby, then a 15th anniversary celebration at the Studios and a summer press preview, followed by lunch at Artist’s Palate at Saratoga Springs.

While I was delighted to know I’d be enjoying this magical day, thanks to Jennifer and Dave, I also knew it would mean a few re-arrangements, so the Keys to the Kingdom tour got moved to the Tuesday, along with our breakfast at the Kona Café. The only downside was the change in dates meant we wouldn’t be meeting Elaine (Bert & Sully) and her DH Keith for breakfast, but at least we’d see them for dinner that night at the Crystal Palace.

Having re-arranged the day of our Keys to the Kingdom tour, we decided to book a third backstage tour – the Epcot Garden Discovery Tour, as it sounded like another unique opportunity, taking in the wonders of the Flower and Garden Festival. We had discussed the idea a couple of days before and decided that we could afford it, if we took out our planned day at Universal Studios. On our last trip, we’d planned to go to Universal and had never made it, because we didn’t really want to go off property and as we were planning to buy one day tickets when we got to Universal, we wouldn’t lose any money by opting out, so at least the budget still fitted!

So by the time we were six days out from our trip, we were on track with some even more amazing experiences awaiting us at Disney!

Next: The journey begins – a day before we get to Disney!

I'm really enjoying this. But every time I get to the end of one section, it's driving me crazy. I think why can't that woman write more?

Seriously though Cheryl, this is one of my most looked forward to things when I log on.
