Re: Two birthday girls, a boat and a mouse or two Another excellent update Terri. It's a shame you didn't get to have breakfast on the boat, but given a choice between that and Kona Cafe, I think you made the right decision! As I read about the tape running out midway through Fantasmic, did that bring back memories of when I went through exactly the same thing. Trust me, it only ever has to happen once - and you'll never do it again! ![]()

Re: Two birthday girls, a boat and a mouse or two October 1 - Cheryl's Birthday. Let the Suprises Begin The First Suprise ----- We woke up early today – and planned to attend Early Magic Opening at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and to see Festival of the Lion King…. At least that’s what Cheryl thought!!! We decided to drive over to Animal Kingdom so that afterward, we could head to EPCOT for the Food and Wine Festival. We arrived at DAK at 800am. To be honest, I don’t have a clue what we did for breakfast…. And we walked over near the Guest Services booth. I sat down for a moment (can’t remember my excuse) and a gentleman in AK costume walked up to Cheryl and I and asked us if we were there for the “Backstage Safari”. Cheryl started to say no – and I chimed in and said YES!!! She turned and looked at me – and I said “Happy Birthday”. Our running buddy Kris had bought this tour for both of us as a birthday gift. Since I helped coordinate the purchase – I knew about it – however, Cheryl was clueless…… We met Paul, our guide and waited for the rest of our group – that turned out to be a group of business people staying at the Grand Floridian for a weekend of “professional development” – some sort of medical company. I have to agree with everyone else that has taken this tour and written reports about it – it is GREAT!!! We went behind the scenes (no cameras…..) and boarded two vans. Our day included a visit to the white Rhino van – where we were introduced to Harley (he was born during Bike week) – what a sweet rhino (if rhinos can be sweet); then we went to the Elephant barn – we saw one of the females in the play yard (I forget her name). It was really interesting to see the barn where they keep the elephants and hear about the two babies (2 more are on the way). We went to the animal food preparation area – those animals eat better than I do!!! It was really interesting to see how they prepare everything. After our tour of the food area, we went to the classroom area and saw a video of how they train the animals to respond for medical exams. Then a CM came in with a ball python. She said that the ball python is like the golden retriever of snakes… my response – I don’t care. It’s a snake (I was bit when I was very young). After the round with the snake – we went on our version of the Kilamanjaro Safari – without the little red storyline – and I enjoyed it SO much more. Paul told us all about the areas design, and how the animals are (did you know the giraffes are notorious gate huggers???). It was a really nice tour. Paul also said they are planning a rehab of little red – since they now have real baby elephants – they think little red looks a lot like Dumbo. I videotaped the entire safari – it was really neat. After our trip through Africa, we went to the Tusker House for a wrap up – a survey and we each got a pin…. It is such a cute one too – limited edition – just for the tour. Cheryl and I decided we were HUNGRY – so we looked at the menu and decided we wanted to head elsewhere – as we were leaving the park – we smelled heavenly BBQ – and ended up at Flame Tree – a first for both of us.

Re: Two birthday girls, a boat and a mouse or two Excellent update! That Backstage Safari tour sounds fab. I wouldn't have liked the snake tho!! But I don't hate them as much as spiders - I have a real phobia of them but we won't go there lol. Looking forward to hearing about your bite to eat at the Flame Tree. Annabel ![]()

Re: Two birthday girls, a boat and a mouse or two What a great birthday present (and very nice friend)! I think I would have liked the safari without the story as well. We'll have to try Flame Tree next time where there. Great update!

Re: Two birthday girls, a boat and a mouse or two I think DH and I should book this tour, just to get us back into AK. I always feel guilty that it always gets put on the back burner--we skipped it last trip and I expect that we'll do so again in January. ![]()
