| Re: Two birthday girls, a boat and a mouse or two Ok - I will try to start my TR - I am using dial up instead of high speed since I am in PCola at my hotel - not sure how I will do photos, but I am trying to get it started. Prolouge - The Best Laid Plans The Characters - Terri (from Jacksonville), Disney nut, turning 34 this trip. Cheryl (from Washington DC metro area) - another Disney nut & Terri's running buddy turning 28 this trip. Dates - Sept 25 - Oct 3 Plans - 4 night Disney cruise on the Wonder, followed by 3 nights at the Swan (Boardwalk originally). This has been a memorable summer to say the least. Hurricane Charley blew into the SW Florida coast on Friday August 13. One week later I was deployed to assist with hurricane recovery efforts. I spent almost 3 weeks working on temporary housing for people displaced by the storm. This also meant working very long days - usually between 13 and 16 hours per day. As August came to a close, Hurricane Frances came to visit Vero Beach. Frances threatened Jacksonville and those of us from JAX were sent home from Charley to prepare for the possible arrival of the storm. I stayed home with Six and Rocky - JAX was lucky to only get tropical storm strength winds. We were lucky. I got by with a tree against the house and very little damage. After Frances I stayed home and returned to work. Ivan reared his head and we waited and watched. I was assigned to work hurricane Ivan recovery as well. Of course - while all of this was going on - I was trying to plan and prepare for our Disney cruise/WDW birthday trip. Monday - Sept 20 Ivan came ashore the weekend before, and I had been warned that I would be deployed to be assist in the recovery. My boss and I came up with a plan to cover my potential absence on the cruise. The Emergency Operations folks decided no to use our plan - so I thought the issue was over. I travelled to Ft. Lauderdale for a meeting on Monday morning, and was out of touch all day. Tuesday - Sept 21. I came to work in the morning, and the phone rang - it was the emergency operations manager in Pensacola wanting to know my opinion of the proposed temporary housing site -- HUH????? I am not deployed!!!! He told me I was listed as the NEPA (environmental) manager. OH NO!!! They didn't replace me!!! We managed to work the issue long distance - me in JAX and them in Pensacola via lots of emails and phone calls. We also decided I would stay in JAX and if necessary they would find someone else to cover me until I returned from my trip. Next installment - The prolouge continues...... |

| Re: Two birthday girls, a boat and a mouse or two (Since I am here waiting for a HUGE directory to copy from the hard drive of the PC I am working on to a very SLOW network, I have a moment to add a chapter or two...) The Prolouge Continues Wednesday - Sept 21 Came into the office this morning and got another phone call from Pensacola - they need someone there and I am the only one available until Saturday.... so looks like I am going to Pensacola. I spent the morning getting my travel orders and rental car and going to my house to pack 3 days worth of clothes and get the cats self feeder and waterer ready to roll. I made it very clear to the folks in Pensacola that I have a trip to take this weekend and that I can not stay past 3pm on Friday afternoon. After getting the suitcase packed (or so I thought) and the cat supplies ready for Rocky and Six, I managed to get on the interestate (I-10) headed west around 1pm. The drive from JAX to Pensacola takes 6 hours. Luckily I had gooten a few books on CD earlier in the week - so those helped keep my brain occupied - cause the drive surely DID NOT. I arrived in PCola around 630pm, and after getting through the road blocks (got to love that COE shirt and DOD ID) got onto the Hwy 90 detour around the I-10 bridge that was destroyed (remember the photo that Dopey's girl sent).I got to the site around 8pm, yep it took almost 2 hours to get throught a 20 mile detour!!! I reviewed the site (as best I could in the dark) and then had dinner at the Emergency Operations center at Saufley Field (Navy base) before heading back on the road to the Corps Emergency Response and Recovery Office (ERRO) on Elgin AFB. It took another 2 hours to get through the detour and I arrived at the ERRO at Duke Field at 11pm!!! I was SO tired. I checked in, filled out paperwork (No govt operation is complete w/o paperwork) and got the key to my hotel room. I was booked at the Radisson at Ft. Walton Beach~ 30 minutes south of the ERRO. I had to Drive through Shalimar (thought of Bill - LizardCop). I arrived at the Radisson at 1145pm and I was beat. I had gotten up at 6am that morning, and 18 hours later, got to go to bed... Those sort of days are very hard to do. Next - Thursday.., What do you mean Jeanne Changed Course???? |
