999 Happy Haunts - Trip Report

Here is our trip report of the 999 Happy Haunts “A Ghoulish Gathering”.

We arrived at the Grand Floridian and proceeded to check in and get our packet. Included in the packet was our lanyard with our pass to all the different events. On the front was a picture of Master Gracey in his final stage, we noticed later that each different package had a different stage of Master Gracey The top package – Phineas Package – had him in his prime; the middle package – Gus Package – had him as an old man; and the lowest package – Ezra Package – had him in his decaying stage. On the back was a list of the different parts of the event.

After we had received our package and any merchandise we had purchased, we picked up our complimentary glass and got to fish for a pin in a caldron. We headed to get something to eat at MK. We had a quick look around Liberty Square and then headed back for the Artist Meet & Greet. When we got there the line wasn’t too bad, so we waited to see about getting the artist to sign our pins and our lanyard cards. We filled out our additional RSP (to get any additional merchandise we wanted).

Decided to head back to the resort for a rest as we had arrived in the wee hours of the morning and didn’t get much sleep. After getting a lite snack, we proceeded to get ready for the main event. We had brought costumes to wear and had basically decided not to wear them after talking to a couple people at the Meet & Greet. But DD & I talked about it some more and she wanted to wear hers, so I said I would wear mine. After we told DH our decision, he agreed to wear his too. We got dressed and headed for the bus. Had the bus to ourselves on the way over. Got there just before 8 pm and there was a line, but not too bad for length. Waited just a little while and they finally prepared us to go in. We were admitted and directed to the hub in front of the castle. Had a short wait until they opened up the area leading into Adventureland. We were then directed through Adventureland to Frontierland (down past PoTC and around the end of Pecos Bill’s). The buffet was set up in Pecos Bill’s and they had about 6 different buffet tables to accommodate everyone. We got in line to get our dinner and picked up drinks as we got in line. They had a large selection of things to choose from, a couple different types of salad, vegetables, potatos, rice, stuffed chicken, and roast, plus a variety of rolls. We all got plenty to eat.

After we finished eating, we headed out and were met by the Grim Reaper just outside Pecos Bill’s. He was about 12 ft tall and looked great. I got a couple good pics of him and then we headed up the way. We ran into a couple of interesting “Ladies” and took a couple pictures with them. Then we ran into a comedic mummy. He was funny. DH posed for a pic with him and we headed toward HM. We got side tracked by the dessert tables first. There was about 10 different desserts on each table (same on each) and it was hard to choose which ones to try. I ended up trying a great chocolate cake and a super marbled cake. DD & DH tried a couple different cheesecakes too.

We were then asked if we had taken our Doombuggie photo. Since we hadn’t we continued up toward HM and found the photo spot. They had a Doombuggie set up near the entrance to Fantasyland (outside Columbia Harbour House Restaurant) with a photographer taking pictures. We had two different poses and got to pick from the two (or buy both). We finally walked into the HM and rode that. After getting something else to drink and wandering around the shops we decided to head back to the main entrance and back to the resort. We were taking pictures near the Train Station when the lunar eclipse was pointed out to us. So we watched that and then picked up our departing gifts and final dessert and headed to the bus stop.

We had an excellent time and I think we would not hesitate to do it again. The food was excellent and plentiful. If we had wanted any alcoholic beverages, we had complimentary tickets for two each and then you had to pay for any additional. We opted not to use ours, though next time I just might indulge. The desserts were to “die” for. Plus since there were so few people there (1300), it was nice to have the area practically to yourself. There were more adults than kids, but there were kids in attendance. If you are looking for something to do out of the ordinary and can afford it, (package prices were $2300, $550, $150 per person), this would be the thing to do. We did hear comments that last years was better than this years. I also heard a rumor that this might be that last year for the 999 Happy Haunts. DH also heard something to the same effect, but that it could be changed to a pirate themed event.
