The ups and downs of our Thanksgiving trip

Well, we're back from our surprise trip to WDW. Here is a day-by-day account of our trip:

Tuesday, November 23:
First of all, I had been sick several days before. This bit of information will come into play later. I was still recovering when we left on Tuesday. My DH and I told our children that we had to take Daddy to the airport for a business trip to Tampa. He's been there on business in the last few months, so it was believable. He and I kept "arguing" about it so the kids would not be suspicious. Our plane was leaving at 8:30 which meant that we had to be at the airport by 6:30 which meant that we had to leave our house by 5:00. We all got up at 4:00AM. The kids were so mad because we were making them go to the airport!
When we got there and parked the car, Joe told the kids to get out so he could tell them good-bye. As we pulled out suitcase after suitcase for daddy's "overnight" trip, the kids still didn't get it. My DD was yawning and my DS was complaining because daddy didn't let him bring his Yu-Gi-Oh cards in the car. I told him that he wouldn't need Yu-Gi-Oh cards where he was going and showed him his new Buzz suitcase. Still, nothing. I told my daughter, "Do you think that's daddy's Pooh bag? You're not going to school today. We're kidnapping you and taking you to Disney World!" She was in shock and then she ran around the parking lot screaming! My 8 yr. old DS just stood there with tears rolling down his face. They were so excited! When we got in the airport and sat down, my DD called all of her friends, telling them that she would not be at school because of the trip. It was so great!

When we got there, we couldn't check in to the WL yet, so we changed in the bathroom, stored our luggage and headed to the MK. We ate lunch at Tony's and rode rides until 4:00 when we headed back to the WL for our room.
The room was great, but I was so dissappointed in the view! We faced MK and could see the castle, the AstroOrbiter, and Space Mt. from the room, but our balcony looked out over the service entrance where all of the trucks make deliveries. Not pretty. But the MK view will come into play later, so I'm not going to complain too much.
We went back to MK and watched Spectromagic from Pecos Bill's while we ate dinner. We then ran through Fantasyland, doing rides during Wishes. I knew we would see it later and we wanted to get as many rides in as possible.
We stayed in MK until closing (12:00). My DD was dragging. I thought it was the excitement and the fact that we had gotten up at 4:00AM, but we were to find out differently.

Wednesday, November 24
We slept late because of all the excitement from the day before and because I was not feeling great. However, we were at WDW and family memories sometimes have to come before health. So I dragged myself and the rest of the family out of bed around 9:00 and we headed for AK. My DD was complaining, but she has a tendency to be grumpy, so I didn't think much about it. We got at AK and decided to eat first thing before the lunch crowd came around. We ate at Flame Tree Bar-B-Que (YUM)!! After lunch, we were going to do the safari, but Katie was moving slow. When we stopped for a bathroom break on the way to the ride, Katie said that she really didn't feel good and wanted to go back to the room. I felt her head and she did feel warm. We went back and I spent the rest of that day in the room with her. She had a fever of 102. We both rested, so it was really good for me. I just hate that my DD had to get sick so I could find time to rest.
When Joe and Ryan got "home," we were trying to decide what to do. Katie said she wanted us to go ahead and make our PS at Rose and Crown. She was happy to stay in the room alone. Ryan didn't want to go to Epcot. He wanted to play video games in the arcade. When we found out that the Cub's Den had video games, that's where he decided he needed to be. So Joe and I had a "date" to Epcot (it rained that night, so we got drenched, but Illuminations was wonderful! I cried, of course!), Katie was able to get some rest without us around and Ryan was able to play video games for three hours.
When we got back to WL and picked up Ryan from the Cub's Den, we started getting ready for bed. The curtains were closed, but I heard a boom. I opened the curtains and Wishes was just starting. We were able to sit on the bed with Katie and watch the fireworks. So I told Joe that I wouldn't complain about the view anymore! It was very special and made Katie feel better!

Thursday, November 25 -- Thanksgiving Day
Katie was still sick and running fever on Thanksgiving Day. The good thing was we had planned to take a break anyway and relax at the hotel. My DH, DS and I went down to breakfast in Whispering Canyon. And, yes, my DH did ask for ketchup! Our server was named "MT" and she was very funny. At one point, Ryan wanted crayons, but our table didn't have any. I started to get up and get some from another table and I got in trouble! She said that they were going to keep an eye on me because I was a thief. It was a very loud breakfast, but my DS laughed the entire time and the food was very good.
My DH and I decided we had better call the front desk and ask about a doctor for Katie. They have a contract with East Coast Medical and there was a doctor on call. Of course, since it was a holiday, we were charged an additional holiday fee, but it was worth it. The doctor came around 11:30 and was very attentive. He made sure he got every bit of information he needed to diagnose Katie correctly. He finally told us it was acute bronchitis and gave us an antibiotic and other medicine. It was pricy, but I don't feel like we were over-charged.
We were worried that we were going to miss the Cirque show that we had planned to see that night, but by 4:00, Katie was feeling better and was wanting to go to Thanksgiving Dinner with us at Liberty Tree and then on to Cirque.
Liberty Tree was good. Not great, but good and the characters were alot of fun. I enjoyed the atmosphere for Thanksgiving and the meat was yummy. I felt sorry for those who did not make PS for Thanksgiving. Several people were told that they were welcome to wait, but that they would probably not get a table because they were booked up. I heard some say they would just have a turkey leg for Thanksgiving. I can't imagine thinking that I could just walk up to a WDW restaurant on a holiday and get seated! I was very happy for my PS!!
After dinner, we needed to get to DTD for Cirque. My DH decided the best thing to do would be to take the Monorail to the Poly and pick up a bus from there instead of taking the boat back to WL. He felt that the boat would take too long. Well, we waited with many others at the Poly for the DTD bus for well over an hour. No buses came by while we were sitting there. Time was going by and I was stressing! My DH and another person called Disney Transportation and complained. Several people had been waiting for over an hour for a bus, any bus! None had come by! Eventually an empty DTD bus came and we all got on. We made it, but we had to run from the bus stop to the theatre, not something my DD needed to do in her condition. The annoying thing is that we left in plenty of time to make it without running, but no buses came by the Poly. We still don't know what the problem was with the transportation, but we were very upset!
Cirque was most excellent!! I highly recommend it! I have never been to a Cirque show, but my DH and I are considering going to see one in Las Vegas when we go next week. It was worth the ticket price! Just don't try to catch a bus at the Poly!!
Katie made it through the show and said she was feeling better, thanks to the medicine. But is that a cough I hear from my DS??? . . .

Friday, November 26
Friday morning, Katie said she was feeling much better. We had a PS at Crystal Palace for the Pooh and Friends character breakfast. Thanks to Disney transportation, we were late again, but the Cast Member said that none of her 8:05 people had shown up yet; we were the first. I was upset because I had planned on taking photos of the castle and Main Street without a crowd of people, but instead I was rushing to the resturant, hoping that my PS would not be given away. They did get us right in, however, and we had a nice table by the window looking out over the bridge to Adventureland. The food was good (Breakfast Casserole!), but I wasn't very hungry. The characters were fun, especially Tigger! It wasn't very crowded and it was an enjoyable meal. I couldn't understand, though, why Piglet had to stay in the middle of the resturant and did not mingle about.
After breakfast, we started in Adventureland and went around the parks, enjoying the low crowds. Around lunch time, it started getting really croweded, so my DH and I decided it was time to leave MK and head to MGM.
We got to MGM and headed to the TOT. 60 minute wait! We got a fast pass and went over to the RRC -- 75 minute wait! My DH said, "I'm not waiting 75 minutes! Let's get back in line at TOT!" So we did and we waited with everyone else for alittle over 60 minutes. It was, of course, worth it. It was my DS first time on it and I'm not convinced he really liked it! Our fast pass was for 6:10-7:10, so we planned to come back and do it later in the night. After the first ride, though, it was time to head to the Brown Derby for our Fantasmic dinner.
What a wonderful restaurant! I felt like I should be wearing a slinky dress and a mink stole with Veronica Lake hair instead of a Mickey Mouse t-shirt, shorts and a baseball cap!
After dinner we were supposed to be at the "secret" gate by Oscars no later than 6:00, but my DH said, "Oh, we have time to ride the Great Movie Ride!" so we did . . .flash foward to us running to the gate at 6:00, hoping we would still be able to get in. They did let us in and we had excellent seats without having to wait forever in a line! I highly recommend doing the Fantasmic dinner package! It was worth it!
After Fantasmic, we made it to the TOT for our fast pass time, so we were able to fit that in. We again tried the RRC, but the line was still too long for my DH. The cast member out front told us to get there right at 8:30 (closing time) because the line would be short. So, we headed to the Osborne Christmas lights.
Beautiful! It was like walking into a wonderland! They were so pretty and it was snowing! No glasses, though. I've heard that in the past cast members passed out glasses that made everything sparkle. They did not do this when I was there.
After that, we rode Star Tours for my DS and figured that we wouldn't make it back over to the RRC before 8:30. My DD was getting very upset because she really wanted to ride it. So, off we went again, racing across the park. We made it right at 8:30! So, my DD was able to ride her favorite ride and my DS was able to ride it for the very first time. He loved it! And we bought the photo!
I was glad that my DD was feeling better, but was getting worried about my DS cough!

Saturday, November 27
This was to be our relaxing day, but since Katie had been sick on AK day, this became our day to enjoy AK. Joe and Ryan had spent some time there on Wednesday, but did not do certain rides because we were not with them. This was the day everyone could enjoy AK together.
We got there around 10:00 and headed straight to the safari. There was only about a 10 minute wait. It was great, as usual, but I feel like we missed out not going earlier. We, again, slept later than usual because we wanted everyone to catch up on their much needed sleep. Because we went later in the morning, the animals were not as active as I have seen them before. It was still a wonderful ride, though.
We ate at Tusker House, even though my husband pouted because he wanted Flame Tree Bar-B-Que again. I had the chicken sandwich and it was very good! For dessert I had to have the Toll House cookies. YUM!!
Then we were off to DinoLand. Dinosaur, one of my favorites, was better this time because I brought along ear-plugs. Does anyone else think this ride is too loud? The Primeval Whirl knocked me for a loop, so I sat out and ate a Mickey ice-cream bar (YUM!) while my family did it a second time.
We had a PS for the Biergarten in Epcot at 5:00, so it was off to Epcot. The Biergarten is one of my favorites and it did not disappoint! I think I could just eat the salads and bread and be satisified! But, of course, I had my share of the main dishes and desserts! The Oompa band was fun and my DH and I danced the polka! Why do people turn their noses at German food? I say, bring it on! (and don't forget the beer!)
It was raining when we left the restaurant, so we put on our ponchos that we brought along. Ryan was complaining, saying he was too tired to wait around for the fireworks, so I told Joe that we would head back "home" but he and Katie could stay. We watched "my fountain" (the one near Ice Station Cool) for awhile and then headed out of the park. Joe and Katie actually caught up with us at the bus. They both decided that they did not want to stay without us. We got back to our room in time for, you guessed it . . . Wishes! While we were watching it, my DH was holding my DS and called me over. He felt warm. We took his temp and he have a fever of 104!!!! Luckily, I had brought some children's Tylenol. Joe and I took turns sleeping and watching him. His fever finally broke around 4:30AM.

Sunday, November 28
I had planned the Storybook Princess breakfast for Sunday. I was so excited about it! I couldn't wait for the princesses to see my handsome boy! Guess who didn't get to go to the breakfast? My handsome boy and I! He still had a fever (100) Sunday morning, so I told Joe and Katie to go ahead and enjoy the breakfast and Epcot. Ryan and I hung around the room all day. I was wishing I had brought a book. ToonDisney gets old quickly!
Around 2:00, Joe and Katie came back. Ryan's fever had gone down to 99.2 and he said that he felt like going to the Grand Floridian for tea. We took the boat to MK and then the boat to the GF. Tea was so wonderful and the gingerbread house in the lobby was beautiful and smelled delicious! I really enjoyed tea. I was feeling a bit sorry for myself because I had missed two days in the parks but tea was so relaxing, so I just got over it. Even Joe said that this is going to have to be one of our traditions.
After tea, it was time to get changed for MVMCP. I had made us all matching tshirts (my daughter thought that was ridiculous!). My DD and I went on over but DH stayed with DS and let him rest awhile. The parade was great. Joe and Ryan made it to the MK just in time to see it. Wishes was so beautiful! It was nice to see it with the narration and music. We had only seen it before while running to rides or while sitting in our hotel room. Mickey's Twas the Night Before Christmas was very enjoyable. Ryan was thrilled because we were able to ride Buzz's ride three times in a row and I was thrilled because I was able to ride Space Mt. two times in a row. After 10:00 there were no lines. It was great! I would do it again, if we were crazy enough to come back during Thanksgiving or Christmas, which I don't think we will do!
Ryan was so tired at the end of the night, but he said he was glad he was able to go to Mickey's party.

Monday, November 29
Our last day. We went to Toon Town first thing because Ryan had not met Mickey yet. We were able to meet Mickey and Donald. Ryan was so happy.
Then we went to DTD for lunch at Fulton's Crab House and much shopping! I spent way too much money, but my DH said I deserved it because I had missed so much of our trip staying inside with sick kids.
We left WL at 6:15PM, and our plane left Orlando at 8:30. We got home and I am already missing Wishes from my window!

Re: The ups and downs of our Thanksgiving trip

I just PM'd you about this, but my DS, Stephen, was at the Cub's Den the same night as Ryan and was playing a video game with a boy when we got there - wouldn't it be cool if it was Ryan!

Also, your room had to be near ours because I also wasn't thrilled with that loading dock until I saw the castle and Wishes, too!

We also had a window table at Crystal Palace looking over that bridge, but we did dinner. Tigger has no personality for us, but Piglet was great and he was walking around when we were there. Strange!

Robert and I also thought that they played the same cartoons over and over again on ToonDisney!! That's so funny that you said that!

The night it was raining (the 27th), we had just made it back to the WL when the rain broke out. I'm sorry you got stuck in that, especially with the kids being sick!

I tried to get a FP for RRC one day at around noon and it wouldn't let me come back until 4:00 - 5:00, so I passed. That is the only ride I would have loved to have done that I didn't get to do.

Sorry your kids were so sick, but at least you got to do some of the stuff you wanted to. Wasn't that gingerbread house at the GF amazing!
