It was a real pleasure meeting you. We had a great time. Too bad about your traffic woes on the way down. Now, if you had just left a day earlier like we did, you would have breezed down without a hitch! Next time, better consult with ftwildernessguy

Did you brave I-95 all the way down or did you take an alternate route?

[/ QUOTE ]

We used to pick up 95 in Philly, but over the years I found for us it was easier to go over to Harrisburg, take 15 to Frederick, then 270 to the western loop of the Beltway and 95 from there. I also pass by I-4 and continue on 95 to the beeline and 417 into WDW. Takes a little longer and has tolls, but avoids the I-4 nightmare. I also think the western loop on the beltway is less congested than the eastern loop, and I avoid Baltimore altogether going this way.

We took our DN (niece) to DW for her first time. She is a year older than DD4, and they are very close. It was so much fun watching her become introduced to DW! I'm enjoying your trip report! Thanks for sharing with us.

Not another tussle over the Gem car?! I hope it all gets worked out quickly. I love your trip reports and I'm excited to read about your DN's reaction to everything!

Re: Fortunate Family of 4 Finds Fun At Fort For 5th Time: Day 1 & 2

I have gotten way behind on my trip report. Things have been hectic. Hope you enjoy our next installment.

Day Three: (Part 1)

We are up very early so we can get to Magic Kingdom for the opening ceremony. I am in the shower by 6:00 am while DW puts on coffee and walks the dog. Our 2 teens are still in suspended animation (aka fast asleep) and don’t hear a thing. When I get back I do everything but take out a bugle and blow reveille. With lots of moaning and groaning they finally got up and once they woke up and realized today was the first day in the parks, began running around and getting ready.

We got on the monorail at TTC and rode it to MK. We got through security and the ticket scan without too much trouble. The finger scan was new for us (and lots of guests) so things took a bit longer. Once through it was about 8:45 and we were about 15 deep behind the rope which gave us a pretty good view of City Hall. DS was explaining to DN about the opening ceremony and we could see CMs scurrying around the train station getting ready. We reminded our fair skinned nephew about sunscreen and he obediently applied it. So did all of us. There was not a cloud anywhere and a bad sunburn on day one could ruin our trip.

DN seemed to be in awe of the whole thing. I really got teary eyed as I watched his reactions and was glad we were able to share the magic with him. Once the pixie dust was thrown and the rope was dropped it was as if we were in a NASCAR race and the green flag had dropped. This sudden rush always amazes me as people burst into a run and practically trample over other guests in their quest to be one of the first at the attractions. We like to be more like the tortoise than the hare in our approach to theme parks. This way we don’t burn out from exhaustion trying to be commandos.

I had informed DN of our MK strategy and he didn’t seem to believe me that it would work at first. Once we got past Main Street we turned left into Adventureland. True to form, about 75% of the guests turned right for Tomorrowland. Among those who turned left some split off and headed for Liberty Square leaving a much smaller group actually entering Adventureland.

First up I had the guys go into Swiss Family Robinson’s Treehouse. DW and I had done it once in the 1980s and DS always refused to go. DW needed the ladies room so this kept the guys occupied for that few minutes. Jungle Cruise and Tikiroom opened later so we headed on to Pirates of the Carribean. DN was now getting into it and had fun on his first real ride. On around to Splash Mountain where there was no wait. DW and I staked out a spot on the bridge to watch them come down. We got a picture but its not clear. The better picture was of the guys going under the bridge after the slide. They came running from the exit having gotten the slip for their picture. They asked to go again, so, since there was still just a 5 minute wait we said OK and DW headed to buy their ride photo.

Now their adrenaline was high and they wanted more thrills. Next up was Big Thunder Railroad. DW refused again to go on any kind of roller coaster so we waited for them to ride. Once off they declared that “it was nothing” as they were craving bigger g-force rides.

Now Splash and BTRR are getting more crowded and we head over to Haunted Mansion. Again it was a walk on which in some ways is disappointing since you don’t get to take in all the stuff in the cemetery while waiting in the queue. Again the guys are laughing their heads off at how silly it seemed rather than a scary ride.

DW insisted on Small World which just undergone refurbishment. DS had always refused to ride but gave in since Mom really wanted this one. Small World was one of the longer waits we encountered that morning but certainly worth it. Peter Pan was jam packed as usual and none of us was particularly motivated to ride so we skipped even getting a FP to come back later. We worked our way around to Philharmagic which was just about to get underway. We scurried through the fast moving line and were seated with our yellow 3D glasses. This one gets all your senses involved including your sense of smell. That apple pie scent sure made us hungry!

After Philharmagic, we headed toward the Castle and veered left toward Tomorrowland. Our first order of business was going to be lunch since the guys had skipped breakfast and DW and I had eaten a very lite meal 5 hours earlier. Cosmic Rays had something for all of us. DS headed for the chicken counter, DW and DN headed for burgers and I headed to get myself a turkey club wrap with pasta salad. I found a table for us all and was quickly joined by DS who was starved and was already nibbling his fries from the chicken strip meal. DN and DW were took a bit longer since their lines were much longer. Food was good and enjoyed by all.

Once lunch was over, the guys wanted to hit Space Mountain. Of course it had a 55 minute wait posted and the FP was for nearly 3 hours later. The guys decided to skip it and try it tonight when we returned. On to my old favorite, CoP. I sort of embarrassed the guys in this one. I sang along to “it’s a great big beautiful tomorrow”. They poked fun at the corny lines which added to their fun. At least this time we didn’t get stuck like the last time although it is noticeably noisier getting between scenes.

Stitch and Buzz had long lines and the guys said they wanted to go browse the shops on Main Street then head to FtW and hit the pool for the afternoon. First, though, we had to detour back to Adventureland and try Dole Whips. When we got there the line was long, but moving so DS and DN waited while DW and I scoped out some benches in the shade because DN was complaining he felt he was getting too much sun. So now we finally had Dole Whips and could join in the contest comparing them to Mickey Bars. We carefully savored each refreshing spoonful like gastronomic experts reviewing a gourmet meal. Our conclusion: Dole Whips Rule!

After the cool refreshments we headed back to Main Street. After finding a few trinkets for family and friends, we headed out and caught the boat back to TTC and got our car to head home. As we were exiting I could hear the roar of the race car engines coming from the Petty Ride Experience so we made a quick detour to watch a few rookies take to the track. Ahhhh now that is something I wish I had the money to do. I had a friend who had a race car and used to help him work on it. I have always been a car nut and race fan so this was cool to watch. It wasn’t long before the guys were complaining they were hot and wanted to swim so we cut my dreams short and went on home.

Re: Fortunate Family of 4 Finds Fun At Fort For 5th Time: Day 1 & 2

Day Three: (Part 2)

It was a nice sunny warm day perfect for the pool and sunbathing. The Meadows Pool was packed. We figured Sunday would be a big pool day since it is usually a big check out day for FtW. DW and I took the dog for a nice long walk along the canal. He hadn’t done all his “business” since we left home so we knew he needed some exercise.

Since it was nice, warm afternoon, DW and I headed to the Trading Post and got something we rarely buy: a six pack of beer. Lots of other folks had the same idea as we noted while waiting in line. We went back to the site and sat in the shade under our awning and enjoyed a nice cold beer. Nothing like a beer and a cigar to relax with on a lazy afternoon.

The boys came back after a couple of hours and grabbed dry clothes and headed to take showers. Once we got everything hung up to dry, it was time to discuss dinner plans. We decided on Cracker Barrel which is always a favorite and reasonably priced eatery.

After dinner we headed back to MK. The goal was to get the guys on Space Mountain so that was our first stop. Tomorrowland was still crowded. Stitch had no more FPs. Space Mountain was also out and still 60 minutes in standby. We left it up to the guys. If they wanted to wait in line, DW and I would go do something on our own and meet back up with them in an hour. After they talked it over they decided not to waste their time and opted to try for a third trip through Splash. Can you tell they like that ride? As we get over to Adventureland it is beginning to get dark. Splash has about a 10 minute wait. The guys are looking forward to the experience at night. DW and I don’t want to get wet since it was already getting chilly, so we hung out to wait. The wait seemed much longer. We could hear the ride was having problems. That familiar CM’s voice on the loudspeaker telling riders to remain seated that the ride would resume soon seemed to be heard a dozen times while we were waiting. One good thing they did was to turn off the water spray on the bridge. The guys say it’s a cool experience at night but just not the best thing on a chilly evening. Their wet shirts made them uncomfortable for the evening. As we headed away from Splash through Frontierland toward Liberty Square, the CMs were busy roping off viewing areas for Spectromagic. I thought it was a bit early until I heard one of them talking about high school marching bands going through first. COOL! We got a spot near the Shooting Arcade and waited. All the bands did a great job. I teased the boys, who are both in band, that they need to practice so they could come to Disney someday. Actually they are much more into football than marching in a band.

Spectromagic was wonderful as always. We have only seen it from Main Street so over here in Frontierland gives a different perspective. DN loved it too. We have the musical score on CD and had played it for him. The lights and action of the various floats really bring the music to life.

It was really chilly at 9:30. DW found a shop in Liberty Square and bought herself a light jacket. The boys toughed it out even though their damp clothes and shoes had to be uncomfortable waiting for Wishes.

Wishes was spectacular. DN had only seen Fourth of July fireworks back in our small hometown which is nothing on the scale of Disney. He was very quiet and riveted to the sky watching the fireworks and listening to the music and narration of the story of wishes by Jiminy Cricket. This is truly Disney at its best.

Another Spectromagic is scheduled for 11:00 so we, like thousands of others, decide this is a good time to head for the exit. CMs are guiding guests to the monorails. It must have been too crowded on the platform for the express monorail to TTC because they were sending a group of us over to the resort monorail. It ends up at TTC but with one stop at the Contemporary. We wait for 2 trains until its our turn. Not bad really given the huge numbers of guests waiting. It was a treat for DN too since he got the chance to go inside the Contemporary Resort. He said he thought it must be cool to stay in this place. I agree!

Once at TTC we are down the ramp and on our way to the lot. Surprisingly traffic is flowing smoothly and we make our u-turn back through the toll gates and over toward FtW. It sure is nice that they took down the old gate. Once past the security shack, you don’t have to fumble with the room key and hope the gate works this time or that someone ahead of you is totally clueless about using the key to open it. All that needs to be done is to walk the dog while the guys make a comfort station visit. It was a long day and a total blast for all of us.

Next Up: Day Four (Animal Kingdom & MGM)

Re: Fortunate Family of 4 Finds Fun At Fort For 5th Time: Day 1 & 2

Day 4: Animal Kingdom & MGM

Part One: Exploring Africa and Asia

Time is flying so fast on this trip. We have grown so accustomed to having almost 2 weeks and having time in between to sleep late and take a day off now and then from the parks that it was a bit more difficult getting up bright and early this morning. But with limited time and so much to do, heck we can sleep when we get home!!

After the usual quick cup of coffee and shower to wake us up, we head off for AK. Again we get there just as the parking lot is opening and quickly make our way to the gates. We note that at 8:30 the lines are fairly short. We are only a few guests away from the turnstiles. Of course the Breakfastasourus line is longer but moving. Its going to be another hot sunny day. DN slathers on the sunscreen to protect his fair skin and we decide its not a bad idea for all of us since we were just hanging out waiting. The gates open at about 8:45. Once inside we quickly head left and through the caves of the Oasis and on to the tree of life. Once we are nearly there we join a group of guests waiting behind the rope. In another few minutes Minnie and Goofy come by in their safari vehicle to begin the welcoming ceremony. They contact Mickey via walkie talkie as he is climbing the base of the tree of life. This was the first time we caught the ceremony. During past trips we hit AK on EE days and missed it. The rope dropped and it was off to the races.

Our first goal was Kilimanjaro Safaris. Past the tree and off to the left and over the bridge we go. In no time we were at the entrance of KS which already posted a 5 minute wait given the flood of guests that obviously were following our game plan this morning. LOL. The queue moved along quickly and we only waited a minute or two for our vehicle. In fact the longest wait was once we got onboard as the dispatchers clearly needed to space the ride vehicles out a little. DN loved the ride and took lots of pictures. He reminded me of a Hollywood Paparazzi snapping away as our driver pointed out the exotic animals along the way. DS joined in the act and took his share of photos too.

I asked Mark what he thought. He said it really looked like the pictures and video he has seen of Africa. This is what truly amazes me about KS as well. How did Disney do it?? AWESOME! On the Serengeti I was a bit disappointed that the giraffe were not out in force as they have been on previous trips. On our first visit, we had to wait for several to cross the road before we could go on. Today the plains were devoid of animals. As we went on we did see more animals and a little fight between and adult Elephant and what I took to be a teenage smaller elephant. Not sure what the little guy did, but the big dude was running after him and trumpeting. Maybe it was a Dad and junior came home with a bad report card or something.

Of course we survived to rickety old bridge (barely since Mark didn’t lift his feet) and later helped save Little Red from the poachers and returned from our 2 week safari to our starting point. 2 weeks sure went by fast! On we went through the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail. We paused for a while as the boys were amazed by the huge gorillas.

It was now getting quite warm although not stifling. The boys decided they wanted to do Kali Rapids next. DW and I were not ready to get wet so we let them go by themselves. They had a blast and got in the lucky (wet) seat as DS always does. They are more worried about their hair being messed up than anything else. Their love for Splash Mountain did not wane as they pronounced this ride as “for whimps”. Not thrilling but still fun. They said the CM asked if they wanted to ride again but they said no.

As we headed from Kali Rapids we continued through Asia and headed toward Dinoland. As we passed the construction of Everest, the boys awed over what a cool ride it looked like it was going to be. We all stood on the bridge just before Tarzan Rocks and watched the work. It was significantly further ahead than our December visit. Its really looking like a mountain! We pass Tarzan and walk through dinoland. Nobody was interested in the carnival like atmosphere but DS recalled he could get McDs French fries at Petrifries. No such luck. Still too early for it to open. The guys are hungry but not starve and can wait for lunch. OK with DW and I so off we go back to the tree of life. A quick peek at our time schedule and we discover we are just a few minutes away from Festival of the Lion King so we head over just in time to get a seat before they close the doors. WHEW! The last time we saw the show (May 2003) it was an outdoor event. This was our first experience indoors and have to say its much better (aka cooler). We were in the Lion section and got to roar. Even my 2 teens got into it a little. DN loved the acrobatic monkeys. Those little guys do some amazing gymnastic stunts. The music was also fantastic. I found myself singing along with all the familiar tunes and urging the guys to join in too. This mostly got rolling eyes. Hey the fun is getting into the show. Kids!

After the show DW needs a bathroom break and we hang out deciding what we have left to do. The boys decide on Its Tough to Be A Bug and then call it a day at AK. We head over and find once again a fairly fast moving queue that stops just momentarily at the stroller corral. People always seem to get confused at that spot and is a common bottleneck. It makes you slow down and take in the elaborate wood carvings at least.

We get our bug glasses and grab seats. DN was laughing his buns off at the show especially at the stink bug and his gas attack. Now he knows what we have been talking about as we passed the big billboard near the MK. You know the one? With the smoky bug’s butt? LOL He also found it humorous that so many little kids screamed and cried when Hopper arrived. Hey to them he is scary!

Once outside we marvel at the other carvings and wind our way back up to the top of the tree’s root system after living like termites for 20 minutes. We pause to make sure that the guys don’t want to try Dinosaur. They vote to skip it. They are starving now and want to eat. DS suggests McDonalds which is not too far from AK. Its unanimous and we head into the drive thru line just shortly after noon. I swear I would go broke feeding these two teenage mutant ninja football lineman. I am talking double quarter pounders fries and large shakes! OUCH! The guys decide they can’t wait to get to camp and ask if we can eat in the car. Sure why not! Let me tell you this was the quietest these two were for days. All I heard was chewing and slurping. Not one word was spoken. In no time the feast was over and we headed for FtW for our afternoon rest.

Well, that sounds like a fun-filled morning at Animal Kingdom!
I can guess what happens when you go to MGM.....both RnR and ToT have long lines.
