The Trip of Firsts...or Come Over to the Good Side of the Force Trip :: Updated 2/19 - Day 1

Trip: November 7 - 15th
Resort: Wilderness Lodge
Reason for this Trip: First Family Vacation, DD 14th Birthday, Our 1st Anniversary

Cast of Characters and Experience:
Yvonne - Me: Age 40 - 2 previous trips to WDW and 30+ trips to Disneyland
Sam - DH: Age 49 - None - Reluctant Disney Newbie
Kassie - DD: Age 13/14 (will turn 14 on the trip) - Disneyland 1x and WDW 3X

Pretrip - How it all began...

We have an online business (we sell Antique & Vintage Jewelry - both on Ebay as Powersellers and also we have an online store) that keeps us quite busy. I alone work upwards of 100 hrs a week and Sam has a full time job (He’s an Electrical Technician - which is several grades above an Electrician. He always tells people “I don’t do light bulbs” LOL - He’s been at the same company 20 years with perfect attendance) he also works another 20-40 hrs a week on our business as well. This business has done well for us and we were able to purchase our 1st home and even are aggressively saving/investing for an early retirement for Sam from his regular job to work full-time with me in the home business in about 5-8 yrs.

I knew after a few years of this aggressive type of working (and the rewards of it) that what would make this all complete was nice yearly family vacations. Sam grew up without them so this was a whole new experience for him. In fact he’d never really been on a “real” vacation...ever. It’s hard tying to describe how GREAT a real vacation would be and also convince him that WDW would be the ideal place to someone who’s can’t relate. I did the best I could but it did come with some resistance.

At first he kept asking me “how much is this going to cost”? And not in the nice “Just trying to get an idea” - but in the “OMG it costs THAT much?” LOL I didn’t have exact figures so I did the best I could to tell him what I knew for sure of the expenses. We used MouseEarVacations and had a very good experience working with Pam. She really exceeded my expectations in help and was always extremely quick to answer my crazy questions! He later admits (as of last week) that if he knew how much this was going to cost he would have NEVER taken this trip.

I then had to figure out which resort to pick. I knew that Sam’s ULTIMATE dream house would be in the woods, in a log house - so Wilderness Lodge sounded ideal, but I’d heard so many great things about Animal Kingdom Lodge and I know he loves animals as well. So what’s a girl to do when she can’t decide - make HIM decide. LOL I guess I never did give him any moderate resort choices (simply because I wanted to stay at a deluxe - I’ve stayed in Contemporary [wasn’t terribly impressed] and stayed in All Star Music and liked it alright as well. With much deliberation HE chose Wilderness Lodge - which is where I secretly wanted to stay as well.

He finally gave me the OK to book the trip for November of 2005 in the summer of 2004 - in August - only about 400 and then some days away. Talk about a killer countdown! LOL The first thing any good planner would do is go out and purchase Birnbaumn’s Walt Disney World. (And before you get everything knotted up....keep reading....LOL). I head over to the mall and started reading through the Disney World Travel books and what did I see..... Passporter. I looked and looked and looked through it. Could it be??? A dream come true??? A TRUE planner. I was enamored and BOUGHT it. Ok, I bought both and honestly, barely even skimmed through Birnbaumn’s.

Up next - Let the Planning begin and Will He EVER let me talk about Disney....

Pretrip - Let the Planning begin and Will He EVER let me talk about Disney....

I started on the planning and decided to let MouseEarVacations help me with that part. We had a lovely travel agent - Pam. She helped us out with many things. Pam recommended so we decided to book a town car through Premier Town cars. Boy that turned out to be a FIASCO....more on that later. At that time, DME didn’t even exist and when it first came out we were still leery as to use it or not. Next time we’ll definitely consider using DME. I also decided to rent an ECV while we were there as I have Fibromyalgia and although I can walk normally, I can’t do LONG walks and standing for outrageous periods of time. I wasn’t planning a lot of “handicap” lines - I was just going to park and stand in regular lines.

I started looking for airfare and but knew I couldn’t purchase anything until around the Spring of the next year (remember we were planning this about 15 months ahead of time). Since it was such a long time to plan ahead, my daughter and I kept planning milestones to count down til the trip. Our 1st one was the 1 year mark on November 7th 2004. Then it was Christmas. Valentines Day was next, then my mom came to visit from California in May (she hadn’t seen my daughter in person for 10 years). As I figured the summer of 2005 was going to CRAWL by (even Kassie said that time went by faster when she was in school).

Meanwhile during the late Spring - I found some airfare for $156 round trip. Not too bad at all. I’d been saving money each week out of Ebay sales for the trip and promptly took some money out or Savings and purchased them. I also started my itinerary with ADR’s. I’m not going to bore you with my original plans because they were all scrapped - but I will let you see the intinerary/ADR’s that we used and booked so you can see IF it all unfolded and worked out during the week.

After Sam got over the initial “OMG, it’s costing how much”. He started into the “I’m going to be SOOOOO bored” thing. When I tried to explain how many cool and exciting things we’d be doing, he’d say “Disney, Disney, Disney, is that all we can talk about” or "OK, I've had enough Disney for today". I tried TiVoing a few Disney things on TV and even one about the Wilderness Lodge - but I could tell it was DEFINITELY a captive audience. LOL I did have the planning DVD sent and also had one sent about DVC. Of course I knew he’d never go for it. I had to try. He did watch both of them and read through all the DVC stuff and even seemed mildly interested ??

Meanwhile to feed my Disney “thirst”. I found the trip reports at the PP website and was in “heaven” reading them all. There were 3 people’s trip reports that stood out to me at the beginning, that was chezp (Cheryl & Mark’s very experienced adventures), Colexis Mom (her whole family was an adventure to read about) and DawnDenise (Dawn & Chuck - fellow Hoosiers and Mr. Incredible Groper). I LOVED these. They were all so different and so unique and delightful to read about.

We had purchased the food plan and I was excited to be able to eat in “real” restaurants this trip (my other two previous trips were mostly all counter service as my ex-husband would basically only eat french fries and all things made of bread) so I didn’t get to experience any table service meals whatsoever. It was getting down to the wire and I needed to get my ADR’s set so I consulted the list, read the menus at AllEarsNet and had them all arranged and “just perfect”. We were going to F&WF and I figured we could use many of our snack coupons for at least a few meals at F&WF. Little did I know......

Up next - Jersey Week - we’d better rewrite the ENTIRE Itinerary with ADR’s & “You’re going to run me to DEATH”....

JERSEY WEEK - We'd better rewrite the entire Itinerary with ADR's & You're going to Run Me to Death

Sorry it’s taken so long to get this all together. But I finally got all my stuff together and in date order (all the receipts etc.) and am ready to rock and roll on this trip report.

I found out that during the week we’d be there would be Jersey Week. I didn’t think it would be “that bad” until I started talking to a few people and they suggested it could be VERY bad in regards to crowds. Now my parents are from the East Coast and I tend to think people from anywhere near that area are VERY animated so I enjoy that! But I wasn’t going to enjoy waiting in terribly long lines. Every trip I’d taken before didn’t have long lines. I think the longest we waited for an attraction might have been 15 minutes - TOPS.

I enlisted the aid of the people on this great list and was recommended by a few to check out Tour Guide Mike. I checked out the website and figured it would be worth my to join and it sure did help a LOT. Just gave me strategic ideas to combat the crowds. GEEZ - sounds like some military action taken. LOL Doing this meant redoing my ENTIRE itinerary. That also meant redoing every single one of my ADR’s except the last day. How sad is that? Apparently (according to Tour Guide Mike) I was going to all the wrong parks on the wrong days and in order to avoid the crowds and long lines I needed to make some serious changes. I will not bore you all to death with my previous plans and ALSO the new ones. Just the ones that I changed and went with.

I did have to call WDW Dining and change them all. The woman on the phone must of thought I was NUTS to cancel CRT and LC at such a late date (only about 30 days before we left). She was AMAZED that I was able to get every single ADR with the times I wanted as well. OK - I was amazed and happy too!

Sam finally got past the “OMG... it’s going to cost us this much” (well he didn’t get past it but he stopped complaining.....LOL). And he also got past the “I’m going to be bored” thing - although I secretly thought he thought that he truly was going to be bored - but then he moved onto the “You’re going to run me to death”. I made sure, when I did the new “Itinerary” that I penciled in downtime and sleep-in days. And then he says to me about a week before we leave “So if I want to stay at the resort one day and just watch TV and play on the computer, I can, right?” I was like “What??” I mean we can do that at home and it was going to mess up the ADR’s. So we talked about it and after I got all upset. I guess I reacted poorly...heheheheh OK, I admit it, I’m human and didn’t handle it well, he said “Don’t worry I’ll go with the Itinerary - even if it kills me”. LOL

I did have this sort of realization in the midst of all of this though. Since he’s only been on a day trip to Kings Island. I can see why he’d think we’d be bored. If someone told me “I’m going to take you for 9 days to Kings Island - don’t worry we’ll have fun”. I’d think they were nuts! Of course, we all know how DIFFERENT Disney is than Kings Island - but if you haven’t been, how would you ever know.
