Vero Beach and July 24 Eastern Magic **LONG** -- photo link added Tinksmom's DH is posting this report: Vacation 2004 Disney Vero Beach Resort and 7 Day Disney Cruise – Disney Magic – Eastern Caribbean July 20 to July 31, 2004 Link to photos - http://photos.yahoo.com/jtallon@sbcglobal.net Monday, July 19 - Day 0 It was a busy day getting everything ready to go. Worked a full day. It was Monday all day long. I did not get half the things I wanted to done, but still managed to leave on time. Mowed, treated the pool, watered the lawn and put out a soaker hose for the hand full of plants in the back yard that will not survive the July heat in Texas without lots of water. Finished packing and got most of the bags loaded in the car. The only things left are to drop in the toothbrushes and a hand full of other items in, in the morning and we are ready to go. The plan is to be up at 4:30 a.m. so we can be ready to leave at 5:30 a.m. for our 7:45 a.m. flight. We are going to be on vacation so we get up an hour and a half earlier than normal so we can be to the airport about the time I normally start to work. Am I missing something here? By the time everything is done, showers taken and the dishwasher is running, it is after 9:00 p.m. . After running full speed all day, it is hard to wind down. Good thing Jay Leno did not have much to say. I finally fell asleep on the couch just before 11:00 p.m.. Again I have to ask, is there something I am missing about the whole vacation thing? Tuesday, July 20 – Day 1 The alarm never had a chance to go off. The three of us were up before 4:00 a.m. and pretty much dressed and ready to go by the time we had originally planned to get up. It turned out to be a good thing, because it gave us a little time to piddle around before we had to leave the house. We are trying a new thing for airport parking. My lovely wife found a coupon for a place called Air Park near DFW Airport. For a dollar a day more than remote parking, we get a covered parking space and shuttle service to the terminal. It was easy to find. We found a parking space right away and the shuttle actually followed us to the parking space. By the time we got out of the car, the driver was out of the shuttle and waiting for us. He loaded all our bags in the shuttle bus and we were off to the terminal. We were let out right next to the Delta curbside check-in and within 10 minutes our bags were checked, we had boarding passes and we were on our way. Security checks were a snap. No lines. No unexpected hassles. OK, maybe this whole idea of getting to the airport before 6:30 a.m. is not such a bad thing after all. The flight left on time, was pretty much uneventful except for one really happy baby that would not quit making chatty little happy baby noises (not sure which is worse, an unhappy crying baby or one that is really happy). Even the young children around us, including our own, were getting a little annoyed by the end of the flight. But, if a happy baby is the worst thing we encounter on this trip, we got nothing to complain about. The flight actually arrived a few minutes early. Bags all got to Orlando intact. Through the tunnel to the Avis Priority check-in. Mid-sized car with guaranteed upgrade if available, and it was, and we were off to Vero Beach. We went east to Cocoa Beach then A1A south to Vero Beach. This is a slow trip with lots of stop lights and low speed limits (45 MPH most of the way, max 55 MPH). Not a bad drive, but if you have been to Florida before, you have seen most of this before. If we do it again, we will take I95 south to state highway 512 east to highway 510 which intersects with A1A just north of the Vero Beach Resort. It probably cuts an hour off the trip. This is the way we will go back to Port Canaveral on Saturday. Check-in at Vero Beach is typical Disney. Same for the rooms. If you have stayed at a Disney resort property before you have probably seen this room setup. We have an ocean view room in the Inn. Beautiful view from the balcony. We went swimming for about an hour, walked down to the beach, back to the pool for a few minutes, then off to town for dinner and shopping. $7.95 for a boogie board at Wal-Mart vs. $7.00 a day to rent one at the resort seems like a no-brainer. There was an absolutely beautiful sunset this first night. Will try to post links to pictures. Wednesday, July 21 – Day 2 I got up around 6:00 a.m. and went out on the balcony to watch the sun rise. It came up over the water directly east of our room. You would have thought someone did this just for me. It was beautiful. A question for Disney staff if you guys follow this stuff: What have you got against fitted sheets? They are proven, low technology items that stay put all night long. I am a person that tends to toss and turn a lot during the night. Before the night is half over, the flat sheet on the bottom is on my DW’s side of the bed and I am lying on a scratchy mattress pad. We did the character breakfast at Shutters. Goofy and Max. Again, typical Disney if you have ever done a character breakfast. Good food, lots of it, happy people and great orange juice. After breakfast, we put our room key in the lottery for the evening turtle walk. It is limited to 19 people each night. Our key was the third one picked so all three of us get to go. The little princess did the faux painting and very merry un-birthday party. Mom and daughter did bingo in the community center. Both report that “a good time was had by all”. Lots of time in the pool, which seems a bit small by Disney standards. The water slide has a lighthouse theme. A nice ride, but not a lot of imagination. It just spirals around in one direction. When it comes to resort pools, one stay at the Beach Club at WDW can spoil you for life. Even the swimming hole at the old Dixie Landings is more interesting. Dinner at Sonya’s was very good. My DW and I split the chicken breast. I got a Cesar salad, which was big enough to split as well. My DW got the fish chowder. Our DD got the individual pepperoni pizza. For dessert, the kids meal comes with the chef’s special dessert which is described by our server as not just a chocolate chip cookie, but an extra special chocolate chip coolie on a stick. When we made the reservation, they asked if there were any special occasions. We told them our 12th anniversary was a couple of days earlier, so we got two pieces of cake served on a plate that had Mickey and “Happy Anniversary” stamped on it in chocolate. Pixie dust on the table and Mickey sprinkles on the cake plate finished out the presentation. The cake was pretty good too. We reported to the turtle walk at 9:00 p.m. There was a live presentation on sea turtles in general and the problems they are having surviving all over the world. It lasted about an hour and was presented by a Florida State Park Ranger. I expected it to be preachy, but she did a good job of adding balance. They send out scouts to look for signs of turtles coming ashore to nest. There were two search teams, one going north and one going south. They go about a mile in both directions. Unfortunately, the search teams did not spot anything on our night and the group broke up and headed off to bed about 12:15 a.m. We were all disappointed, but it reminded us all that nature is unpredictable and even Disney and the State of Florida cannot control when and where sea turtles will nest. Overall, it was a good day. Thursday, July 22 – Day 3 We made it to the water slide races at the pool first thing. The little princess stayed interested until she dropped below the second fastest time. We spent the rest of the morning in the ocean. There is not a lot of wave action, just small swells that break right on the beach. The kids still have a lot of fun with the body boards and it would be really hard for one of them to get hurt. Do I sound like a parent or what? I was surprised at how cold the water is this far south. A gentleman from New Jersey assured me that I did not know what cold ocean water was. Still, I am looking forward to the warm blue waters of the Caribbean next week. Our DD did the animation cell painting at 1:00 p.m. while my DW and I hid out in the room for an hour – out of the sun. After that it was back to the pool for the rest of the afternoon. At one point, one of the lifeguards brought out a Rubbermaid storage bin filled with ice water. He proceeded to spray people in the pool using a large squirt gun. It had to be shocking, but everyone young and old seemed to love it because they all circled round with parents holding up their children as shields or even targets. After that, one of the cast members threw plastic fish and in the pool for the kids to swim after. It was a free-for-all. After getting kicked a couple of times our DD decided she had had enough. By this point, we were all hot, tired and grumpy. I think the pace was finally catching up with us. It was back to the room for showers and baths and a little quiet time. The little princess fell asleep and we had to wake her up to go to dinner. Dinner at Shutters was good. DD had Mickey ravioli and smashed potatoes. The extra special dessert was a cup cake with a gummy shark on top. DW and I split an order of conch fritters. If you have never had them, you should have them when you are in Florida some time. They are like hush puppies with conch meat in them. Very good. DW tried the conch chowder. It was very fishy tasting and she could not eat it. Our server was great and took it off the bill. She also had the Cesar salad. I had the pasta fagoli soup and Cesar salad with chicken. The pasta fagoli soup was more like vegetable soup, with chunks of ham and Mickey pasta in it, than its Italian namesake. But, it was very tasty all the same. After dinner we checked out a movie at the gift shop. We watched The Love Bug. It is a lot of fun if you have not seen it lately. I think the time in out of the heat; just laying around watching a movie did the three of us a lot of good. By bedtime we all seemed a lot happier and more relaxed. Friday, July 23 – Day 4 There was no hurry to get up and get moving this morning. We laid around the room, watched cartoons on TV and read. It was 9:30 before the little princess got bored and wanted to do something. She and her mom went down and signed up for making beach bags in the afternoon, played a couple of games of air hockey and returned the movie. Our DD declared that she was not going to get in the water, either pool or ocean all day. And, she lived up to her word. My DW and I spent a couple of hours in the pool while DD painted a bag. Afterward we hung around the room and read. The cable was out so we could not watch TV. We went into Vero Beach for dinner. It was no big deal. Applebee’s. But we were all ready for something different and cheaper than resort food. I talked to several people that had been at the Vero Beach Resort for 8 to 10 days. We all agreed that it is nice, but about 4 or 5 days at a time was enough, especially if you have kids. There is not is not enough to keep them entertained much longer than that. We finished up the last of the laundry, free for members, and got packed for the run to Port Canaveral and the cruise tomorrow. Saturday, July 24 – Day 5 We got up a little after 7:00 a.m. and took our time getting out of the room. We drove back to Port Canaveral on I95 and it took less than an hour. Definitely quicker than A1A. We returned the rental car and had checked in at the cruise terminal by 10:30. That leaves about an hour and a half before we can board. My DW is waiting in line while my DD and I set off to the side and I update this trip report. DD is bored out of her mind. Sitting around the terminal really reminds you that this is Disney. Kids from 1 to 94 and all that stuff. Most are behaving really well. Traveling with kids does not have to be a burden, if the parents will lighten up, have fun and let the kids be kids every once in a while. We got on the boat early. We could not get into our room until 1:30. Cast members even had the elevators blocked so you could not get to the areas with the staterooms. We made a beeline for Topsiders and were part of a handful there waiting when the doors opened. The buffet lunch was good. We ate inside because it was hot and we were tired. We found a way to our room a little early. The steward had not finished yet, but we were able to get in and drop the stuff we had with us. We got the romantic basket with Champaign and chocolate, and it was waiting on the bed. We got a bucket of ice to chill the Champaign and take it to dinner with us. My DD and DW changed into swimsuits and headed for the pool. My swimsuit was not in the bag, so I hung around the room and waited for the bags to come. The first bag to show had a swimsuit in it for me so I changed and headed for the pool myself. It was still several hours before we had all our bags. They all went on the same pallet, so why do they not all show up in the room somewhere close to the same time? I guess it is one of those things us mere mortals will never figure out. Kind of like putting a pair of matching socks in the dryer and only getting one out. This is our third cruise on the Magic and we had never attended the sail away part before. It was a lot of fun with singing, dancing and a live band. The cast members do a good job of keeping things moving. I don’t know how they do it in the Florida heat. I got lots of video and would be happy to post some of it, but I do not know a place on the internet to do such a thing. If anyone knows of a site that does such things let us know and I will give it a shot We headed back to the room a bit after 5:00 to get ready for dinner. My DW and I had reservations at Palo, so we were not planning to eat with our normal rotation. Our DD did need to eat however, so we accompanied her to Parrot Cay so she could have dinner and we could meet our wait staff. Hement from India and Jessy from the Philippines. Really nice guys and worked really hard to keep our DD entertained. After our DD completed dinner, we dropped her in the Oceaneer’s Lab. She does not seem as excited about life in the club as she did on our trip 3 years ago. Hopefully she will warm up to it. Palo was great. Most people don’t do Palo on their first night. I would highly recommend it. There are very few people there and you get loads of attention from the staff. Our server was the now famous Gimma (she now has Jimma on her badge for our American tongues that do not get the Italian pronunciation) from near Manchester in England. She was very pleasant and did a great job. We will ask for her again when we do brunch on Monday. I don’t remember everything we had, but it was all great. Palo is a must do for all the adults. The Champaign was a good way to start a trip and the chocolate soufflé for dessert is one of the best things you will have on the trip. Sunday, July 25 and Monday, July 26 – Day 6 and 7 Two days at sea to start the trip. If you have never been on the Magic before, you can spend most of a day just exploring the ship. Since we have been on the boat twice before, we settled straight into our routine. We spent a couple of hours in and around one of the pools. My DW and I had a couples massage at the Vista Spa. Highly recommended! I did the full body massage and my DW did the amended massage with the facial. Our DD spent some time in the Lab. She still did not seem that excited about it but I think it was better than spending so much time with the grownups. The big highlight was the ladies winning over $400 playing Bingo. Brunch at Palo was great. There are too many items on the tables to try them all, but it is fun to try. Seas were rough with swells from 8 to 13 feet. It made dinner in the restaurants at the back of the ship and shows in the Walt Disney Theater at the front of the ship interesting. My DD and DW had to get up and leave the “Golden Mickeys” show a couple of times before finally moving to the back of the theater and standing for the remainder of the show. Monday night we did family karaoke night. Our DD sang two songs and did a pretty darn good job if I do say so myself. There were several talented people and a couple that were just up there having fun. It is good clean fun for the singers and the audience. Sit a little, swim a little, read a little and eat a lot. I do not know where the time goes, but it sure goes fast. Tuesday, July 27 – Day 8 Sailing into St. Martin was beautiful. You have to get up early though. There were storms overnight on St. Martin and clouds and rain were still visible. Lots of pictures to follow. At this point I have to say I have never been a big fan of the islands of the Caribbean. St. Martin is probably my least favorite. It is a big dry rock in the middle of the ocean that gets devastated by storms every few years. The last big storm was in 2000. We were here in 2001 and things looked really bad. Three years later and the vegetation, what there is of it, is greener and there are fewer bombed out looking buildings. But the place still looks pretty shabby. I will never figure out why all the cruise lines have to stop here. Docking fees must be really cheap. We did rent a car and make a loop of the island. With some very good directions from the lady at Avis, we did find Dawn Beach. It is in an area with a lot of new development on the Dutch side (I think) and the only area I saw that I would even consider staying. The beach was beautiful and there were very few people. The bar at one end of the beach where you park has a fresh water rinse and changing room at no charge. They also rent beech chairs and umbrellas but we did not get them. We did get drinks and purchased a bottle of water as we left. The prices were very reasonable which was a nice surprise since it was the only places around to get food or drink. There were a couple of topless ladies on the beach, but you are going to get that anywhere you go, so be prepared. If you have snorkeling gear take it with you. We did not, but it looks like it would be a good area to explore. We spent a couple of hours at Dawn Beach before heading back to the ship. We made it back to the ship in time for lunch. If you are looking for some peace and quite, spend some time on the ship when it is in port. I went to the adult pool in the afternoon and there were only five people there. We talked to one family at lunch. They were doing an afternoon excursion, and they said it was the three of them and five others at the family pool in the morning. They had counted more than 40 people in the pool, and it is a small pool, the previous day. Leaving St. Martin It is just after sunset and we are backing out of the harbor of St. Martin. The ladies are off to play Bingo again and I am sitting alone on the balcony. It is absolutely beautiful and I do not own a camera capable of capturing an image that will do it justice. There are clouds on the horizon and a ¾ moon high in the sky. The sea is glowing a blue-green that you only get in tropical waters. Flocks of sea birds are flanking the ship as we begin to move forward. Pulling in this morning we had the good fortune to be on the side of the ship with the view of the sunrise over the island. A chance the see the water and island veiled in rain as the first rays of light began to bathe its rocky hills. Pulling out I was beginning to feel sorry for myself. With just the moon, and the clouds, and the sea, and the lights beginning to come on illuminating a small island just to the right and behind the boat. I do not know the island’s name, and it is probably not that small, but that was all I had on my side of the ship. Then I began to look at the clouds. They were great cumulus clouds drifting aimlessly in the evening sky. Floating with them, I began to think about the European men that first set eyes on the Caribbean Islands. Of the stories and myths of the sea they told. Explorers recording their impressions in great log books. All the things they got right. All the things they got wrong. Looking at the clouds now I could see a ring of giant heads forming around the ship. The heads of gods. The heads of stern faced men with beards and massive, curly heads of hair all looking down at me. Were these the things that the earliest sailors feared? The Greeks, the Turks or the Vikings from the far north. Were these the gods that pushed them to explore and fight for new lands, while at the same time limiting their travels for fear of falling off the edge of the world? As my mind wandered, the clouds morphed into one giant god. Two of the gods’ heads became one head that towered over the area the others had recently occupied. Two of the heads flattened out into muscular arms, the likes of which you only see on ancient statues or in modern body building competitions. The remaining heads formed gigantic fists at the ends of the arms. The face was angry. This god wore a wreath of olive branches on its head. His fists held high above his head. It looked like, at any moment, and for no particular reason, he might pound those two great fists down on the island behind us and smash it into a million pieces. Another Atlantis. Vanished into the sea for all time. Another legend. Another myth. Then, with a puff of wind, the face changes and the powerful right fist flattened out. The right arm lowers. A sad faced god with an open right palm beckons us back. Had he done something to make us mad? Why would we want to leave his beautiful islands? “Come back and I will make everything all right.” But the boat does not turn around. Another puff of wind and the face is angry again. The right arm lowers even farther as though he is reaching down to strike the ocean. Is he trying to create a wave that will burry us in our insignificant little boat? Or is he just trying to splash us aside? Insignificant little humans that have taken to the sea and turned against him as we have discovered new places and learned new things. The changing faces of gods. They love and they hate us. Often it seems, at the same time. They want us to worship them, then toss us aside like yesterdays news. Within minutes, the scene is gone. The sounds of the tropical beach party are beginning to rain down from deck nine. The moon is bright and the sea birds are still with us. But the early evening glow of the water and most of the clouds are gone. My time with the gods is over. Did I sound like I was starting to feel sorry for myself earlier for being on the wrong side of the boat with nothing to look at? Nah, couldn’t have been me. Wednesday, July 28 – Day 9 St. Thomas is an early day for everyone on the Magic. All passengers are required to clear US Immigration. For those that have booked early excursions, like us, the process starts at 6:30. Disney cast members and the Immigration Service have the process down pat. It is obvious they are working hard to make the process as painless as possible. The restaurants that serve breakfast are open early so there is plenty of time to eat before leaving the ship. We booked the “5 Star Snorkel and Beach Adventure”. We gathered in Studio Sea for check-in and general orientation for the excursion. In good Disney fashion we lined up and walked off the ship as a group. The excursion boat, the Leylon Sneed, was docked at the same pier where the Magic was docked (between the Magic and the Mariner of the Sea) so it was a very short walk. It took about an hour to motor around St. Thomas and across to Trunk Bay on St. John. The Leylon Sneed is crewed by what look like a bunch of teenagers that take turns talking about the boat, the scenery along the way and some basic history. They do a pretty good job. Shortly before we got to Trunk Bay, everyone that was planning to snorkel went downstairs and selected and tried on their mask, fins and vest. As soon as the boat is moored off the beach, those planning to snorkel or just swim ashore can jump off the back of the boat or climb down a ladder and you are off. Those planning to spend their time ashore with their heads above water are ferried across on one of two Zodiac type boats with outboard motors. The beach at Trunk Bay is rated one of the top 10 beaches in the Caribbean (and some say in the world) for good reason. It is absolutely beautiful with white sand, clear blue water, great scenery and great snorkeling. You get about an hour to play before reboarding the boat for the hour trip back. Fruit punch and rum punch are provided as part of the trip. Soft drinks, bottled water and snacks are available in the salon at an additional price. When we got back to the pier, I spotted a sea turtle near the beach opposite the ship. It was really surprising to see something like that in an area that busy. The ladies spent much of the remainder of the afternoon shopping at the stores near the ship. I went back to the ship after about an hour of hanging with them to read and relax. Again, if you are looking for some peace and quiet on board, hang around when in port. After dinner the ladies went off to see “Who Wants To Be A Mouseketeer” and I sat out on the balcony. I was treated to another great show in the sky. The moon was almost full and the sky near the ship was clear. There were storms on the horizon however, and the light show was fantastic. I could watch lightening bolts that reached from the tops of the clouds all the way to the surface of the ocean. I know they say lightening travels the other way, but that is not what it looks like to me. The storms were so far away I never heard thunder. There was never any since of danger from the storms so you could just sit back and enjoy the show. Thursday, July 29 – Day 10 Another day at sea. As opposed to the first two days at sea, the water is glassy. More time laying around, reading, eating and DD learned the art of towel folding in the Lab. Friday, July 30 – Day 11 Castaway Cay is Disney’s private island in the Bahamas. We made our way to the family beach after breakfast. After a couple of hours, My DD decided she had had enough, and the ladies headed back to the ship. I headed to the adult beach at the far end of the island. The water is very shallow off the adult beach. You can walk out probably 200 yards and not be more than chest deep. The water is very clear and you can see the bottom with ease. I found sand dollars as big as the palm of my hand. I saw starfish and big shells with live critters in them. There was something that looked like bottles caps scattered over one area. And, there were lots of small fish. Lunch is available on the island. It is all back yard barbecue style food. Hamburgers, hot dogs, grilled chicken and rids. Cole slaw, potato salad and chips are available for side dishes and drinks are serve yourself. Back on the ship, the final dinner is a big deal. The wait staff do a parade carrying flags of their home country. There are lots of hugs and pictures taken. Make sure customs forms and immigration paperwork are filled out and you have your ID’s ready for the morning. That way everything goes smoothly in the morning and you can relax the rest of the evening. Our DD participated in the talent show. It was made up entirely of girls. I am guessing they were all between the ages of 7 and 17. Our DD sang “Part of Your World”. She was the second one up and was very nervous, but did a great job. I am always amazed at the talent and confidence she displays. She did not get it from me. There is no way I could stand up in front of a group of strangers and sing at the age of 10. You have to have you bags packed and out in the hall between 9:00 and 11:00 p.m. They are picked up and readied for debarking in the morning. Saturday, July 31 – Day 12 Saturday morning starts early. If you want breakfast, you eat in the restaurant you had dinner in on Friday night. Breakfast for the early dinner rotation, which we were, is at 6:45. After breakfast, we went back to our room for the bags we were carrying with us and said goodbye to our home for the previous week. We had to wait about an hour for the ship to clear immigration and customs. Once the ship is cleared you debark into a giant warehouse where you claim the rest of your luggage. Proceed to the immigration and customs at the back of the building. If you have everything organized, it is really painless. Our flight was not until evening, so we rented a car in Port Canaveral and drove back to WDW and the Wilderness Lodge, our home for the Disney Vacation Club. We took a boat over to the Contemporary Resort and caught the monorail to the Ticket and Transportation Center. We switched trains at the Ticket and Transportation Center and made the loop to Epcot twice. Back at the Ticket and Transportation Center, we took the ferry across to the Magic Kingdom, where we caught a boat back to the Wilderness Lodge. We ate a late lunch at Whispering Canyon, did a little shopping in the gift shop, took in a few of the sights and it was off to the airport for the trip home. This was just the beginning of our day. There were lots of adventures in our dealing with airports and airlines before we got home and in to bed about 2:30 a.m.. I won’t bore you with the details, but I will say that this was probably our last trip on Delta. A few years back we flew on one of TWA’s last flights and saw a lot of similarities between that flight and our flights with Delta this trip. Mismatched, dirty furniture in the terminals, equipment problems and grumpy staff. It is sad how things have changed for the airlines since 9/11. I really used to like Delta.

Re: Vero Beach and July 24 Eastern Magic **LONG** Thanks for sharing your cruise with us! My DH and I went on our first cruise last November aboard RCI's Explorer of the Seas. We departed Miami just as a tropical storm was heading in and had 15-20' waves the first night. Everybody was walking around like they had been drinking. I was just fine until I woke up the next morning. I couldn't eat any breakfast, but managed to shower and get out of the cabin to walk around. After that I felt fine for the rest of the cruise. We also had a balcony room and would never cruise any other way! It was just wonderful to sit out there and watch the sunsets! We also visited St. Thomas where we went snorkling at Coki Beach, and St. Maarten were we went swiming at Orient Beach (French side), besides also seeing Puerto Rico and Nassau.

Re: Vero Beach and July 24 Eastern Magic **LONG** It was worst at the front and back of the boat. But yes, you can feel it. Most people seemed to handle it well. I did not hear anyone really complain about being sick, but more than a few were uncomfortable. My DW says if you start to feel bad, go out oa deck and get some fresh air. It worked for her.

Re: Vero Beach and July 24 Eastern Magic **LONG** -- photo link added Thanks for the trip report - and the wonderful photos. We're planning on spending a couple of nights at Vero Beach in December and it's been really useful, reading all about your experiences there and the meals you had. You've helped a lot in planning our visit down there - so many thanks!
