Day 5 - You have to have pizza in Naples!

We had to be back at the meeting spot at 12 so unfortunately didn't get to leave the main tourist area. Voucher for refreshment (soda or ice cream) but we didn't get to use it before we ran out of time because we wanted some actual food before ice cream.

We walked through the hotel store where we did sample limoncello and browse for a few minutes.

We then went inside and had lunch inside the Hotel Vitoria restaurant and split a Quattro fromagi pizza and had a glass of wine each. It was nice to get away from the crowds for a bit and have a slower paced meal. We were pretty much the only people in the restaurant but our server was friendly and we had a nice little table by the windows. The pizza was of course delicious and just what we needed to keep us going for the day!

No one had really started gathering when we had finished up so we shopped a tad around the meeting area with the few minutes we had left and at 12:01 the rest of the group walked off by us and we walk back over to the meeting spot and Margo walks right past me. Mom asks her a question and her response is “we were waiting for you” like we were literally right there don't give us a hard time lady. (Told you she got on my nerves!) It was an open area shopping tourist strip type thing. If you had literally looked to your left or right you would have seen us, I don’t feel even a little bit bad about being “one minute” late.

Then we were told it's only a 10 minute ride to Mt. Vesuvius but actually it was 45 mins to the top of the mountain. I would have loved that tidbit of info because I would have napped knowing I had a longer ride.

Here are some photos from the ride

Up Next: Day 5 - Will we make it to the top?

Oh my goodness, that guide would really have irritated with me with her attitude too! At least lunch sounded lovely.

Your pizza looked so good and as much as I love pizza in the USA, you can't beat it in Italy! I had one of the best ever when I was in Assisi back in 2006! Your guide was a bit much with her attitude towards the two of you!

Day 5 - Will we make it to the top?

We were given more details when we arrived at the top (or the top of the road cars could traverse at least) It was apparently a 20 minute hike up and 30 minutes to get back down.
Margo just dropped us off at the entrance and said see you at the bus at 2:30. This part of the tour was entirely on our own. There were walking sticks you could take up, but I think they expected a tip when you get back down. Mom did grab one.

The group headed off and started to make our way up the mountain individually. It really doesn’t look too bad when you start. Just some gradual inclined paths up the mountain. We of course started taking it slow, we definitely aren’t the fittest people and wanted to pace ourselves.

After a while of our slow ascent we felt like we were starting to make our way up but after 25 minutes were apparently still 20 minutes from the top. We decided it wasn't worth risking mom getting injured (hip replacement last year) when we still have 3 more ports to visit and tours to embark on so we turned around and went back down. We still saw a lot of stunning scenery and views along the way. Would it have been cool to see a crater? Of course, but my mom’s health and safety just were NOT worth the risk to me. This was why it was such a big issue that they changed the order of the tour, I think had we started with this and not already gotten all hot and worn out at Pompeii, we would have stood a better chance at making it to the top.

We did some shopping around the entrance and got 3 bottles of Vesuvius wine for 12 euro. He also threw in a print of the crater for us. There were a few little stands of knick knacks as well in the areas where the busses parked. Not too shabby!

After our wine time we just got back on the bus (2:10ish) and waited for everyone else!

Once everyone returned from their hike, the bus pulled out and we headed back to the ship. We took in the scenic route once again and headed back to the Magic.

Up Next: Day 5 - Back on Board

Too bad you weren't able to make it to the top - understandable after a hot morning. At least you made some good purchases before getting back on the bus!

I think you made the right choice in not going all the way to the top. It's too bad that the change in order of the tour affected this.
