I haven't seen any posts about this, so I'll assume it's news to other folks, too--took me by surprise!
Many of the "old" pressed-penny machines, where you insert two quarters and a nice, shiny penny, are still around WDW parks, but they're being replaced by new ones.
The ones I've seen take a dollar bill for one squashed penny, or a five-dollar bill for a set of 8. This is quite a bit more expensive than before, but you won't have to lug all that change around.
I haven't looked at the designs on most, but I bought a set of 8 at DHS, in the store just past the Star Wars shop. This was a neat set, as it has Snow White and each of the Seven Dwarfs, labeled 1 of 8, 2 of 8, etc. The numbers are almost microscopic, though!
The only other machine I looked at briefly had 8 independent designs, not a set, as far as I could see. This was at the gift shop outside Splash Mountain, I think.
Good news--new designs (presumably)
Bad news--more expensive
Good news--you don't need to stock up on pennies and quarters
We'll be making a quick trip to Epcot and Animal Kingdom tomorrow (DS18 wants to go on a rainy day, for lower crowds; this worked pretty well Monday), so if you have any specific questions, post them tonight and I'll try to look for answers tomorrow (Friday).
I love to collect pennies! I'm not too happy about the new machines, the main reason being that it's more expensive. In my last two trips I was still able to get pennies from the old machines, but I have no idea if they'll still be around when I go again.
I usually collect a bunch of them for my Grandchildren.
One dollar per penny prices me out of the game.
The greed of some business's is disgusting............
I wouldn't call it greed as so much as I would say it's catering to people who like convenience. You like a particular set of pennies? You no longer have to run around to 8 different machines spread out among 4 parks, 2 water parks and 20+ hotels - you can get them all together and instead of having to lug around pennies and quarters, you get the pennies pressed onto nice shiny slugs (or whatever it is they use as they're not really pennies - no elongated Lincoln head on one side is the giveaway) paid for with bills or credit cards. Individually it is expensive but if you get all 8, it's less than a dollar more total for them.
