Falling in love with New England… TRIP REPORT COMPLETED - Page 37 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Some nice photos from Salem and the memorial was quite interesting! I saw on the memorial that some of the accused witches were hanged and one was pressed! Not sure if I want to know the details of the latter! The marina of Salem was definitely a good thing to do as you got to experience another side of Salem!
Nice tour of the USS Albacore but not sure if I would want to sleep in cramped quarters like that! I think I could be on there for a couple of hours and want to go to the outside world. Not exactly a cure for claustraphopia
Some nice historic homes you got to visit in Portsmouth. Love all the details you provided with the photos and some good history!
A nice dinner with Sheila and Mike, but too bad some of the food was a bit off. Some places serve fried calamari with a spicy marinara sauce (fra diavolo), which you probably had and others with a standard marinara sauce. I guess next time you have it you can just ask to have yours with the mild version! I like both!

Oh gosh no!

I always like to try and give as much detail as I can...

Good point - I assumed it was always the standard marinara sauce served, but evidently not...
Friday 25 September – part one: another day, another state
I slept really well, but unfortunately I was still awake early at 5:00am. I tried to go back to sleep, but gave up half an hour later and got up.
As we were getting ready, we saw some amazing shots of the sunrise on the local news channel, so I looked outside and saw that the sky was lightening, and looked beautiful, so I nipped out to get some photos. They weren’t as impressive as I was hoping, but it was still lovely out there.
We headed downstairs for breakfast just before 7:00am, and it was surprisingly quiet in there. I thought it was a very small breakfast area, given the size of the hotel, but it was fine. I thought the selection was pretty impressive…
Mark told me I could have waffles…
… but frankly I was too scared to use it, so I left it to him, and he did a pretty good job. With that, and some fresh fruit, I was done…
It’s just as well, as their idea of scrambled eggs was a little odd…
We headed out just after 8:00am, and I figured we had time to cross the state line into Maine, so we headed out that way…
We headed along some very British looking streets…
… found the Naval yard…
… and ended up on a side road, where we had a lovely view of a creek, and this lobster place…
I was taking photos further up, but Mark told me he’d seen a lobster scurry under a brick, which was pretty neat!
We drove a little further along, and came across this…
We decided to keep driving, hoping we’d find our way down to the sea, and in the end, we did, and found Kittery Beach. Isn’t this just beautiful?
Once we were done being blown around (can you tell it was windy in those shots? ), we set off again, seeing more lovely properties…
… and a little bit of colour in the leaves.
We also came across a little bit of work to the road – Mark commented that this looked like snow on the road, but we think it was salt.

What a lovely area! And beautiful photos as always!
We usually stay at a Fairfield Inn when we visit my brother in West Virginia and always enjoy the breakfast offerings.
I'm sure that breakfast area is jam-packed around 9am, with a line for the waffle maker.
The coastal pictures are beautiful. Maine has been on our list of places to visit for a long time.... really want to see it now! I love how you have on your Alaska jacket - in Maine!! The two extreme US states.

I was doing a home visit for work and using my GPS. I had to go through a "roundabout" I guess the local terms aren't used. I am used to traffic circle and rotary. It was fine and Saturday afternoon in Boscowen, NH so no others cars in the rotary.
I am curious what city center you are off to see. I know you like capitols so could it be Concord? or Maine's largest city "Portland" both of which are lovely. You've been to Portsmouth's downtown and I didn't think Kittery had one.

Oh boy, I dread to think....

You know what - that hadn't even occurred to me! I was just wearing it as a) I had it with me and b) it seemed appropriate for the weather...

That's too funny - the way you said it was fine with no other cars in the rotary. We have a mini-roundabout at the end of our road and a massive roundabout at the other end. If only I could regularly find those with no other cars!

Hmmm.... well I'm using "city centre" in the loosest sense of the word - it's what the GPS was supposed to be finding for us....
Sounds like a great time at Strawberry Banke. We really enjoyed how different time periods were represented. Do they still have the cat? I can't remember the cat's name, but there was a black cat that decided to make Strawberry Banke its home. When we were visiting, there were several stuffed black cats located around the property. It was a game, kids had a sheet to mark off the locations and at the end there was some small prize. I really enjoyed the story of the (real) cat, and DS was young enough that the hunt was a nice addition.
I hope you didn't trust the GPS. Overall, I find them good for guidance, not much more.
Let's just say over here, we 100% trust it. It's very rare (touch wood!) we go wrong with them, although if we see signs as we get close to a destination, we always follow those instead. However, in the States, it can be a little more erratic, shall I say?
