Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Aruba February 9-16 2013 TR

Introductions:

Me-Kymm, 28, Mom to DS10. I love Disney but I have dreams to travel the world no matter how unbearable flying is, I love to read and being a mom.

DBF-Justin, 34, awesome friend to DS10, loves thrills, tolerates my Disney fanatics and in fact enables me at times, wants to travel the world and enjoys sports.

Where we are staying: The Westin Resort & Casino Aruba, Palm Beach Aruba. Through my contact at Starwood Properties I requested a room with a view. Most rooms have a room with a view but my luck sucks and we’d end up with no view which is why I made the request.

Method of travel: by plane via AirTran Airways

When: February 9-16, 2013, Saturday to Saturday trip! 6:15AM departure and we wouldn’t touch down at Akron/Canton Airport until 10:45PM the following Saturday.

Why we are going: I was gifted two plane tickets on AirTran and a week at any Sheraton property. I of course immediately thought of Disney and thought this could be a cheap trip down, maybe for my birthday?!? DBF vetoed it right away and said “we need to go somewhere new”. We ended up debating California (Hello! Disneyland!) and The Caribbean for a while and finally decided to make California a spring/summer break trip in the future and elected on the Caribbean. DBF did much research and he finally chose Aruba. I was fine with Nassau but he didn’t want to go so I went along with his choice of Aruba. Next was the debate about bringing DS10 with us. I have sole custody so the passport wasn’t the problem and I figured we could take him with us but DBF really wanted a trip with just the two of us. We settled that little dispute by asking him if he’d rather go to Aruba or Disney World. He chose Disney World (can you tell he’s my kid!?!?) and we agreed to schedule a Disney World trip for later this year since Aruba was mostly free with just the two of us going.

After that was settled I had to figure out where DS10 was going to stay for a week and what I was going to do about the guilt I had with leaving him behind. I arranged for him to stay with my sister and brother-in-law and arranged with my dad to help with his activities. I bought him a special Valentine’s Day treat since we wouldn’t be able to celebrate that day together like we usually do. We usually pig out on candy and watch TV together but this year I bought him a movie he’s been wanting and gave him his usual candy supply plus a little extra. I also bought a Cheesecake Factory gift card so he could take my sister and BIL to dinner one night and then left some money for treats and pizza nights. He was anticipating staying there and kept bugging me to leave Friday night while I had to patiently explain to him that they were both still at work and we would leave when one of them got home.

Up Next: Departure Day!

Sounds wonderful - I can't wait to hear about Aruba and hopefully see some photos. I always hear wonderful things about it, but it's a place I don't know much about....

Aruba was one of the port stops on the 2008 Panama DCL Westbound cruise, so I spent the day there on an island bus tour and then shopping. I'll be interested to read what it's like to stay there for a week.

Day 1 in Aruba

We left home at 3:50am and picked up my dad and drove to Akron/Canton airport made it there about 4:45am. Checked in and grabbed Cinnabon for breakfast. We had some time to kill so we relaxed before boarding. We took off on time but we arrived about 30 minutes early in Atlanta for our layover. We then hung around the Atlanta airport for over 2 hours. We grabbed Moe’s for lunch at 9:30am, there is a nice selection and had we not wanted to stay in our terminal we probably could've eaten better. We boarded our connecting flight to Aruba and tried to relax on the flight with some adult beverages.

Finally, we landed in Aruba a little before 4pm, got our luggage and were in a taxi on our way to our hotel by 4:30pm. I loved our cab driver! He reminded me of a cute old man I have in my life, and he has lived on Aruba his whole life. He speaks Dutch, English, and Spanish, we would find this is very normal among taxi drivers in Aruba.

We stayed at the Westin Resort & Casino in Palm Beach. When we checked in we learned we’ve been upgraded to a Junior Suite aka the honeymoon suite. The front desk and the bell hop both asked if we were on our honeymoon and Justin immediately said “No we’re not married!” I kind of giggled and said no we are not married we are just here to relax.

We left our luggage with bell services to be brought up so we didn’t have to deal with it and came to our room. Checking out the room was interesting. It’s certainly large and has a nice view but a remodel is in need. Justin learned that Starwood is trying to sell this property, I can see why. The couch smelled of mildew, the whole room did actually but I kind of expect that in beach front properties. There was mold in the shower grout and some grout was missing, there was some small chunks of tile missing in the floor and our room was never vacuumed while we were there so who knows how long since it's been vacuumed. I never felt clean while we were there, every time I walked barefoot I felt like I needed a shower. The staff was incredible though, they did remind me a bit of the service at WDW.

We lounged in the room for a bit and while slathering sun screen on we received 2 gifts! One was a cheese plate from the General Manager and the other was a bottle of wine but we don’t know who it’s from, although I’d wager on the General Manager. (sorry the cheese plate picture is not cooperating)

We left to have a look around the beach and even though it’s busy season it didn’t seem that busy.

Justin has decided he wants one of these when he grows up.

We strolled around for a bit and then decided to have dinner at Terrace. I had the pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw and fried potatoes (aka French fries). Justin had the mange salsa swordfish with coleslaw and fried potatoes. I did enjoy an adult beverage and we ended up with a mai tai for free because the waitress couldn’t remember who ordered it. Service was definitely different compared to Cleveland! The service was extremely laid back and relaxed. If you needed something you had to flag your waitress down and ask for everything at once or else you’d lose your chance to get it before you got your check. We watched the sun start to set while we had dinner and we just relaxed. Dinner was ok, nothing spectacular but the atmosphere was pretty great compared to the cold and snow we left behind.

After dinner we went back to the room and probably went straight to bed as we'd been up early and had a longish travel day.

Thank you! I miss the warm weather although we hit a high of around 40 today which is like a heat wave for this time of year.

It was, a "free" trip is pretty darn cool.

Ewww to the hotel room grunge! I can definitely see why the chain wants to sell, but they should at least vacuum until their name is no longer on the door! The beach looks lovely, though.

Your room looks nicer than what I was expecting from the description. Seems like the staff were lovely. Beach is beautiful.

What mistakes? I haven't seen any!

You've made it! Sorry the room wasn't that great, although I have to say it looked lovely in the photos.

Day 2

We woke up late and started our day at the beach. The beaches in Aruba are beautiful! We had two lounge chairs at the front of the beach near the water because it was so busy and we had a late start. After about an hour or so we left to change and then headed out to lunch at purebeach.

Purebeach is a restaurant at a different hotel. We had views of the water which is very nice. I had the teriyaki grilled chicken sandwich with a salad and Justin had the fish tacos. Next we grabbed a cab to go to the supermarket. Our driver said the big one was closed due to Carnival so she took us to a Chinese market in the opposite direction. Cost us $10 to go less than two miles, in our world this is a very overpriced fare. I am willing to pay the high fares over driving but Justin and I agreed that the square and the small market are within walking distance next time around. We didn’t buy anything at the Chinese market but a couple of candy bars and walked to a much smaller one down the street that had a better selection of beer. We grabbed some Miller Lite, some wine coolers and water and walked back to the hotel. In the daylight, the neighborhood we were in looked very rundown, cars with flat tires in driveways, lots of trash in the yards, etc. Along the way we discovered the Radisson Square which is very touristy but hey we are tourists. This square has lots of restaurants including a Hard Rock Café, Senor Frogs, and a lot of local restaurants and shops.

We returned back to the hotel with our purchases and then we spent some time in the room reading and relaxing and missing the rain. I had an eyebrow wax in the spa and then we just relaxed some more. The spa service is great! Around 7:30 we decided to try and find some dinner. We weren’t really hungry but a lot of places close by 9pm so if we were hungry after that time we wouldn’t have much choice. After walking around quite a bit I finally just said let’s just hit Senor Frogs. Not our cup of tea. Very poor service (they got my order wrong) and it was extremely loud, I think if we were more outgoing we’d have liked this restaurant better. I had a chicken burrito and Justin had Mahi Mahi and we started off with chips and salsa. After they got my order right the food was delicious! This restaurant was a bad choice when it comes to ambiance but we just won’t return to one of their restaurants in the future. During our walk I found a t-shirt I wanted to buy so I made a mental note to return. We walked back and settled into relaxing some more in the room.

I apologize for the lack of photos today, I'm really bad at taking pictures the first couple of days in a vacation.
