Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Disney comes to Chicago: A Staycation Story

Hello! My name is Amy. I have done a couple of Disney World Trip reports and though this isn't one of those, it still includes Disney. I will start with introductions.

As I said, I am Amy, and the biggest Disney nuts of the nuts that live in my household, though we all love Disney a lot! I am a teacher in Illinois.

Tim is my husband. He always liked Disney, but I've converted him to a Disney nut.

Preston is my 14 year old that is a little kid at heart. He loves Oswald. That is important in the trip report.

Caden is my 11 year old. He wants to be an Imagineer for Disney someday. He is my logical one that still halfway believe the Disney Magic, but really likes the science behind everything.

Now on with how this "trip" came about.

We are fortunate enough to live near Chicago and we really love going to museums and shows and taking advantage of the things the city has to offer. We have a membership to The Museum of Science and Industry. When we heard that is was going to be one of the places to have the Disney Treasures exhibit, we knew there was a trip there in the future. When was the question. We were planning to go to St. Louis over Spring Break to avoid the crazy cold we have been having.

Most of your know what I mean. It's had been like Mother Nature is off her meds kind of crazy weather. Here is a picture to show you.

This is my husband shoveling 12 of the 72 inches of snow we have gotten this winter. Last week we had a snow day sandwiched between two 50 plus degree days. The week before spring break.

So we talked about going somewhere warmer. But then St. Louis got slammed with ice and some snow and that really wasn't warm enough for me. We gave up about traveling anywhere and decided a day in Chicago would be a good plan. We decided heading to see the Disney exhibit would help warm up our souls. And then, Eureka! Medieval Times was having a buy one get one sale, so that would make great evening entertainment. We canceled our hotel in St. Louis, rejoiced when we saw it was going to be 60 degrees on the day we chose to go, and planned accordingly.

But did it?

Great start Amy! By the way, I love your countdown! I noticed it in the car but couldn't say so because I couldn't figure out how to post from the phone. No surprise there, right?

I'm so looking forward to reading about this and HOPEFULLY the snow stays away from us , right? The boys were begging to put swim suits on and play in water Friday because the 70 degree weather felt just that hot to them. Today? It's 29 and snowing. I think mother nature needs to go on some meds to stabilize her hormones, right?

The night before

We decided our Staycation date would be March 21. That is the same day that both the new Muppet Movie came out and Divergent. My son read Divergent and my husband read it. I am a super fast reader, so Thursday, March 20 I picked it up that afternoon and read it all. I finished at 11 p.m. We had plans to be up at 7 a.m. the next day and get to the museum when it opened at 9:30. Well, at 2:30 a.m. I wake up not feeling so great. There is nothing worse than laying there knowing you have to go to sleep, and the more pressure you put on yourself, you just can't. So, I was wide awake, At 5:30, Time stirred and wondered how long I had been up. He suggested going to the Museum another day. My stomach was still kind of iffy. But I just couldn't NOT go. I just had a feeling that if we didn't take advantage of it, we wouldn't go. The exhibit leaves in May. So, we ate breakfast, woke the kids up, and left at 8:15 a.m.

Tim has a new car. This is important. It is a Ford Escape and it has all that fantastic new technology and he made it so his car would give him directions through the radio, even though we know how to get through the museum. We know how to get there going a non-scary way. I say non-scary because some of the neighborhoods close to the museum are quite scary. Well, the voice in his radio told him to take a different exit than the one we usually take, and being risk takers, we followed the nice lady's voice. Yikes!

After making sure I locked the doors 5 times and Tim running a red light because the main light had been shot out and the only light was a little one off to the side of the road that he didn't see (we didn't want to be idling that long anyway), we came to a better neighborhood. Funny thing was we had just passed a police car when we ran the red light and they didn't do anything about it. The kids commented on how scary that was (we hadn't really said anything) and how much cleaner it was in the part of town and Tim turned on the wrong road. The nice lady's voice in the radio reprimanded him and he asked her to update the route, which she seemed to take forever to do.

Finally we got on the right road and thankfully I remembered where the parking garage was because it wasn't marked at all. We parked and entered the museum and I pulled out the camera while Tim got our tickets. We selected the 10:00 entrance to the Disney exhibit and we needed to decide on an IMax Movie. For those that don't know what that is, it's not 4D, but it is a huge movie screen that is dome-like. We decided to do "The Last Reef" since Caden is coming up in a month to see "The Flight of the Butterflies". Preston is coming up in 2 months to tour the submarine and we weren't sure what he would see. Tickets taken care of we headed into the museum.

The clock in the entryway.

Going up!

Posing!

We had about 20 minutes until we could go in the exhibit, so I happily snapped pictures.

I love this dome at Christmas time. We didn't make it up here, but there was a huge Disney tree standing right in the middle of it.

Caden loves this train.

More trains to come!

Thanks! We are supposed to get more snow tomorrow. An "inch or two". Enough already! My grandma watched Frozen with us today and said, "Now we know who to blame for this weather", lol!

Great start, Amy. I'm nervous now because of all the "this will be important" inserts! I love the Chicago museums and haven't been in many years.

Nothing to be nervous about, lol! Just a reminder for a tidbit in the story later. We love the museums too!

My mom said the same thing after we turned on the soundtrack so Cullen could sing for her. It's crazy cold here -especially after Friday's high of 70, but thankfully, we only have a 30% chance of snow tomorrow.

We wandered past the gift shop. There were some other things in the main gift shop downstairs, but of course this is the "dump shop" you exit into.

The Minnie Mouse shirt was actually on sale, from $30 something to $19.95, but I didn't get it. It was kind of see through.

Then we headed toward the huge train they have set up here.

Notice the huge plane up above.

The boys checking out the inside of a steam train car.

More in a moment.
