Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Thank you, both, for following along! I was so glad we ran into the older gentleman who was glad to show us around and give us his back story!

Tuesday July 8/ Day 38

We had a long 6.5 hour drive ahead of us this morning, so after eating the hotels mediocre breakfast we wasted no time packing up and hitting the road.

We stopped and ate a Ryan’s buffet for lunch. We also stopped at a few rest areas to use the restroom and at one point we filled the gas tank… We briefly traveled through Virginia and Tennessee before getting into North Carolina.

It was about 4pm when we got to the hotel. At this point we had gone several days without swimming and the kids were dying to get in the pool. So, that is the first thing we did.

After the pool and showers, we had mac and cheese for dinner and just lounged around the room till bed time.

The next morning we were bound for the Biltmore Estate.

Wednesday July 9th (Day 39)

We were all awake a just before 7am, which is on the late side for us. We quickly got ready and headed down to the hotel’s breakfast. After breakfast, we came back to the room for close to an hour before heading out to the Biltmore Estate.

The Biltmore Estate opens at 9am; we are only six minutes away. So, I figure we will leave at 8:30am to have plenty of time to park and find our way to will call where we need to pick up our tickets I purchased online. The Estates has a wonderful promotion this summer where all kids come free (not one child per adult, but all children). This is obviously a killer deal for meJ!

We headed out to the van just before 8:30am, but couldn’t find the van keys. We had to go back to the room and search for them. Turns out they were in the backpack on Wesley’s back… I had put them there.

We were now leaving a few minutes later than planned but we had a short drive to the Estate. Once there we went to will call to pick up our tickets that I had purchased online. This summer they are running a promotion for children to go freeJ.

Once parked, we took a shuttle to the mansion. Wow, this is a beautiful home! Unfortunately, you are not allowed to take pictures insideL. The history here and they beauty is just amazing.

George had purchased the home as a bachelor; which was surprising to me. There was a actually a bachelor wing inside the mansion that included a smoke room, a gun room, and more. After moving in, he married Edith. Together, they had one child. She was raised in the mansion. When she was 14, George died. Edith remained living with Edith in the mansion until she was old enough to inherit the mansion and grounds.

Once the daughter was old enough to inherit the home, Edith (the mother/wife) remarried and moved to Rhode Island. The daughter got married herself and made the mansion their family home. The daughter birthed two sons right in the mansion and raised them both there. Those two sons lived part of their adult lives in the mansion as well.

Today, one of the grandchildren owns the mansion and one of the sons of the daughter is the CEO of the company/mansion- he is in his seventies.

I love that the home is still family owned. And the family actually literally still lives on the property in their own homes- we were able to see a few of the private homes at a glimpse while driving through the property.

The home has a lot of original artifacts inside of it and it’s just amazing to see.

It has been a lot of years since the family literally lived inside the mansion. They decided to turn it into a business and have visitors.

However, given the family still lives on the property they are at the mansion all the time. A few years ago the grandson held a party at the mansion and filled the indoor pool for the party. They discovered it leaked as all the water emptied from the pool into the basement. So, the pool is now and forever will be empty but you can still view it on the tour.

We were able to see the main rooms, George’s bedroom, Edith’s bedroom, guest bedrooms, and servant rooms. All very interesting.

I believe they said the mansion had 100 bedrooms and 46 bathrooms. Of all the bedrooms, only two bedrooms are for the family. There are 30 guest rooms and the rest are servant rooms. Their one daughter, simply chose from the 30 guestrooms to make her own and changed rooms regularly.

It was a very beautiful home with a wealth of history.

We had access to the gardens and trails as well. But we made limited use of them, as it was a rainy day. We did pack our ponchos, but walking in the rain just wasn’t very appealing. It was an off and on rain… but still… We limited our exploring to the nearby gardens just beside the mansion.

Once we left the mansion, we had a late lunch at Chick Fil A.
After lunch, we retreated to the hotel for swimming and relaxing. We did venture across the street for dinner at I-Hop. We had microwavable foods in the room, but at this point in the trip those foods were lacking appeal and I-Hop was right there, so…

The next day we were bound for the Smoky Mountains.

I missed commenting on a post or two, but I'm still here reading and watching the videos! Very nice time in Pennsylvania, from the small-town 4th of July to the private tour of the empty town, to the mansion. Wonderful how the days turned out-- some were different from the way they were planned, but maybe even better, and some days the plan worked out well. I hope the rainy skies go away for your time in the Smokies.

DH and I road tripped with our DD and her family in June. On our way to Hilton Head we stopped at the Biltmore Estate! It was DH and my second visit. Our day we dodged raindrops too but magically they stopped and we were able to see most of the gardens. Can't wait to go back!

I'm a bit late on this one, but really enjoying it so far! What a great and extensive trip of the USA! Love the videos and photos. Sorry about the mishaps with the parasailing, finding parking and trying to find Wesley in the parking garage! You would think it would be easy when he's 6'2 and should stand out! Not when he's in another parking garage! Well at least this worked out. I'm through Page 4 and will keep catching up on this

I'm through NYC now. Seems like a lot of fun in Philly with so much history there and you got to see a lot! Six Flags GA looked like fun, especially with the safari section. I haven't been there in quite some time. It's about a 2 1/2 hour drive from CT for me. You saw a lot in the Big Apple, but too bad you couldn't fit in and visit the 9/11 memorial! I'm surprised all the walking you did as I thought you may have taken more advantage of the buses and subways! It does save you money and you need to on a long trip with six of you! Actually, if you put quite a few dollars on a metro card, up to five people can use it. The discounts aren't great with the more you put on them, like in some European cities like Paris.

You didn't spend a lot of time in my home state of CT, but Gillette Castle looked like a good choice. I'm surprised you didn't visit Mystic Seaport as that's well worth visiting. Staying in the lighthouse in Rhode Island, must have been quite an experience. Funny you should mention all the Dunkin Donuts establishments in this part of the USA as you'll either run into one of those or a Starbucks! I suppose this Road Trip could also be a Six Flags tour as well!

Looks like you had a great time in Boston with the Fenway Park tour Sorry to hear that you didn't see any moose up in New Hampshire and weren't able to drive on the Mt. Washington route. At least you had a great time in Acadia NP and on Sugar Bush Farm in Vermont.

The kids look like they were having so much fun in the surf pool at GA. Sorry to hear about the fiasco with the passports! Well you all certainly made the best of it and had a great 4th! So nice to see you have such a great family!

PA was quite interesting with the fire still burning underground after so many years! It reminds me of the USS Arizona in Pearl Harbor that is still leaking oil some 70+ years after it was sunk. Great that you got to see the Amish country in Lancaster. Must have been pretty amazing to see your old house in WV!

Love the photos from outside the Biltmore Estate! What a place! It must have been amazing inside. If I lived here, I would never get tired of it, by sleeping in a different room each night. In the course of a year, not using any of them more than four times! All caught up now!

I would imagine Biltmore is very pretty at Christmas! We really enjoyed it!

Thanks for following along!

I loved it also!

I hope to go back someday as well!

Yes, I am already diligently planning next years trip and trying to allot two night...

You should definitely make a point to go!

Sorry about the mishaps with the parasailing, finding parking and trying to find Wesley in the parking garage! You would think it would be easy when he's 6'2 and should stand out! Not when he's in another parking garage! Well at least this worked out. I'm through Page 4 and will keep catching up on this
We definitely had some mishaps, but it was a great trip! Thanks for following along...

Mystic Seaport was on my list at some point... And off hand, I really can't remember why it was taken off (probably due to time constraints) because I really think I remember seeing signage for it when we drove through the area. There are always so many great things to see, but we often have to pick and chose due to time constraints....

We definitely had a great time on the Fourth despite our deportation . We really did enjoy all of the places we visited!

Thanks for following along everyone! I actually finished typing my report within a few days of our being back home.... But for whatever reason, I've been procrastinating our final few videos.... I just completed the Smoky Mountain video and will post the video and report shortly... I'll plan to finish up our final video within the next few days...
