Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

I hope so too! I am not sure if we ate there last in 2010 or 2008. It has been so long I don't remember. I know the food was good even though they tried to serve our entree' way too soon ( I do remember that) and accept for that the service was good too. Fingers crossed it works well for us. I hope Trattoria was a good choice for you!

I like the new bedding so much better there now. The villa looks so nice.

The nighttime shots around the Boardwalk look fabulous!

Love all your photos around Beach Club! I really like the one bedrooms at BC, so spacious and pretty. Your dusk photos of the Boardwalk are so cool.

Tuesday 3 March – part thirteen: testing out Trattoria al Forno…

We found our way to Trattoria al Forno and found Bob and Larry waiting for us. We were quickly checked in and, for once, they had us on the system and I didn’t have to get an ADR number out for them.

We only waited a few minutes to be seating, during which time Larry admired their wine collection!

We were shown to our table and I loved the new look in here. It felt very sophisticated, and as for the aroma – wow! I have honestly never smelt so many delicious things as I entered a restaurant before, including bread and cheese. It was just overwhelming and lovely.

It was a bit surreal when we got to our table, as the check from the previous guests was still sitting there, so we did ask if they had paid for us already, but sadly they hadn’t.

We were greeted by our server Dale and he was absolutely superb. He was by far our best server we’ve had so far this trip. He was constantly checking that we were Ok, and he was so enthusiastic about the place and the menu. In fact, it was his enthusiasm that led to both Larry and Mark getting the lamb. Dale said that when the restaurant opened in December, the wait staff tried every item on the menu (as of course they should ) and he went back and told his wife that she could have anything she wanted and it would all be great, but that the lamb was by far the best.

A shot of Dale from later on in the meal

We started out first with our wine orders and I allowed Dale to get me a very pleasant white wine, but as I didn’t photograph the wine menu, I can’t tell you what it actually was. Bob and Larry shared a bottle of red wine and Mark had a Peroni beer.

Mark’s beer….

… and he sampled my wine too!

Dale told us that we could take our time with the meal and he would pace it according to us. I did say that I was keen to see IllumiNations if it wasn’t raining, given how ominous the clouds had looked earlier on, but I had the strangest feeling that wasn’t going to happen…

Dave brought out some wonderful bread for us, and as Bob wasn’t having an appetiser, we got more supplies when a member of management came round. Here I must say a word about this. This guy, Billy, must have appeared about three times during our meal to see how we were enjoying things.

For appetiser, I went for the Caprese salad with house-made mozzarella, as for me, you can always judge the quality of an Italian restaurant by the standard of their Caprese, and this was good. Look at the presentation of it! Mark tried a bit, and reckoned it needed a little more salt, and I would agree, but for the fact they had the balsamic dressing with it, and to me, that was all the seasoning it needed.

Mark had the fried calamari with balsamic agrodolce. It was the accompaniment that put me off, but I tried one of the calamari, and my goodness, they were excellent quality.

For entrée, Mark of course had the slow-cooked lamb shank with soft polenta, although he swapped his polenta out for potatoes. Dale had told him that you could practically say “boo” to the lamb and it would drop off, and Mark admitted that was pretty close, and I know Larry was impressed too.

I had the linguini alla vongole or linguini with clams, although without the salametto picante, but still with the white wine and olive oil. I really enjoyed it, although it was a little too spicy for me, but in fairness, I knew that was a risk when I picked it…

By the time I was done with my entrée, I was pleasantly surprised to find I wasn’t that full, so I opted for two desserts. I know, how decadent, right? The first was the tiramisu, lady fingers soaked with espresso and layered with mascarpone cheese, and this was excellent, although quite rich.

The second dessert I got was the spoonful of gelato. There were various flavours available, but I opted for the hazelnut, and this was superb.

Mark went for their signature dessert, the bomboloni with dark chocolate served with vanilla gelato, and I heard no complaints about that.

I’d also spotted something else on the dessert menu – liquors, and something on there intrigued me immediately, the orangecello, so I tried that:

Bob sampling his!

It was very nice, and smelt quite innocent, but certainly didn’t taste that way, as it had quite a kick to it! Mark was traditional and stuck with the limoncello…

…. while Larry had a brandy, and my goodness, that smelt strong!

I think it was strong too!

The check came to around $110 with Tables in Wonderland discount, which I thought was excellent value, considering how much alcohol we’d had.

By the time we were done, it was about 9:30pm, and as I’d suspected, IllumiNations had been a dim and distant dream for me that night, but you know what, it really didn’t matter. We had had a superb meal, and Trattoria al Forno is a worthy addition to the line-up of dining options in Disney, and I have no doubt we’ll be returning here again, based on the quality of the meal we had there tonight.

Trattoria al Forno

Appetiser 9½ 9
Entrée 8½ 9½
Dessert 9 9
Service 10 10
Atmosphere 9½ 10
Value for money 9 9

Average score: 9.33

We said our goodbyes to Bob and Larry, and contemplated taking a Friendship boat back to the Beach Club, but neither of the ones at the dock were showing any sign of leaving, so we walked back, and I don’t think either boat had moved by the time we made it over to the exit for the Beach Club Villas, so that was definitely a good call.

I guess the alcohol must’ve woken us up, as we watched about half an hour of Chicago Fire before we finally headed off to sleep.

The weather today was very hot and sunny with temperatures in the high 80s.
The best thing today was dinner at Trattoria al Forno.
The worst thing today was how hot it was at points during our day at Busch Gardens.
The funniest thing today was our wonderful meal at Trattoria al Forno – we laughed so much with Bob and Larry, thanks no doubt in part to some of the alcohol we’d consumed!
Today we tried going back to Busch Gardens for the first time in nearly 10 years
And the result was we had a great day, and really enjoyed our time there.
The most magical moment today was seeing the baby cheetahs!

Next: Mrs. Misery and Mr. and Mrs. Idiot!

That meal looks absolutely wonderful and how nice that not only were you able to be with friends to share it with, but you had a great CM in Dale. Sounds like all the stars were in alignment for your meal that night! And tiramisu? Yum!
What pretty pictures of the Boardwalk--everything looks so sparkly!
