I am a family lawyer and although I don't do criminal work, so many clients have had encounters with the criminal justice system. And in many cases, it can be the wake up call they need.
I always tell people that making mistakes are not such a big thing IF you use the mistake to change. I have seen people really turn their lives around. Unfortunately, our society is not a particularly forgiving one.
Best to your son.
Thank you for sharing.
I hope he can learn from this. DS was diagnosed with Aspergers a few years ago. He is very high functioning, and we just never realized. What brought it to our attention is some of his impulsive behaviors, which he has difficulty controlling, get him into trouble. The judge didnít really care about the diagnosis or a letter from his therapist.
But he will continue with his therapy and DH and I will do all we can to make sure this doesnít happen again.

I have worked with several judges for whom I have a great deal of respect and who treat juvenile cases with a great deal of thought, consideration and caring. But I have heard more than one say when you get to the adult system, the questions is how much (fine) and how long (jail). Often the adult system does not have the option of thinking about individuals and any disabilities they may have. I hope a short time out of the community will help your son understand that controlling his impulses is so important, no matter how hard it is.
Jail can be the wake up call someone needs especially if they don't enjoy their time. I truly feel for those who use it as a polace to get out of the cold and three meals a day.
Many pixies your son realizes it is not a place he wants to spend any more time.
