Great story about the hairdryer. Your garden is so beautiful, it must take a lot of time to upkeep it.

Funny story about the hairdryer. It must be so nice to live in a place with such history!

Wow, your flowers are always so gorgeous! I didn't even get any this year. Not a single one!
I'm sure the hairdryer thing was super confusing to Mari.
What a beautiful blue sky to start out the day!

Considering the crazy summer we had with insane heat, it's done very well. It's a shame it's not still like that, but there is still some colour out there...

I honestly think it's to do with the quality of the plants I get. They all come from my parents. My dad does everything with the exception of the fuchsias and my mum does those. I think if you're presented with something good quality, it's pretty hard to mess it up! And in truth, I don't do much to them - just try and keep them watered and dead head them and that's about it.

It doesn't take that long in all honesty. It's worse when there's no rain, as ensuring it's properly watered takes a long time. I try to have a garden that's pretty much minimal effort. I'm sure there's lots we should be doing, but occasionally we have a blitz and try and catch up. Last weekend, I sorted out my strawberry plants - potted them on and tidied them up, but I've done nothing with them all year apart from feeding and watering them... oh and picking them of course!

I guess to a certain extent we just take it for granted. It is lovely to have such beautiful buildings on our doorstep, but for me, that amount of history is just something that we have all over the place here.

I'm always so impressed and jealous of your garden! It's always so lovely.
The history of your area is wonderful too. My town was a farm in the not too far off past. Now it's just a bedroom community full of houses and strip malls.

Isn't it sad how that happens? And I don't know about you guys, but over here, most of the towns/cities all look the same in terms of it's the same national chains you find everywhere. I love places where you find quirky independent shops. We found a few of those on this cruise actually....

Sunday 9 September – part two: is that all of the luggage?

This is the Tyrwhitt-Drake Carriage Museum, which is home to more than 60 vehicles, including Queen Victoria’s State Landau carriage. It’s housed in the 14th century stables of the Archbishop’s Palace, more of which in a second… The Carriage Museum was the gift of a man called Sir Garrard Tyrwhitt-Drake, who was Mayor of Maidstone a total of 12 times. He began collecting carriages, when he realised horse-drawn vehicles were being forced off the road by the motor car.

Next you come to the Archbishops’ Palace, which holds a special place in our hearts, as this is where we got married back in 1999. I can’t believe we’ll have been married for 20 years next year. Where does the time go?

We headed down to the River Medway, where we found some local wildlife…

… and representatives from the Canadian air force!

This is the new entertainment complex that’s home to a cinema, sports club and restaurants on the other side of the river…

… and the pedestrian bridge that you use to get there…

It was a perfect morning for walking around, nice and sunny, albeit with a little nip in the air, and for taking photos.

We next headed up to Bluebell Hill, which has some stunning views over the Kent countryside below…

It was again a perfect day to visit, given that we could see for miles.

We made our way back to the house and for the worst part of the morning, waiting for Anne and Sean to arrive. Neither of us are particularly patient people and this was painful. I tend to pace around whenever I’m waiting to try and make the time pass faster, so instead I decided to sort out my Wimbledon ballot application form out for 2019 (please give me some good seats this time! ) and then I walked up the road to post it. It’s about a five minute walk each way and just getting out and about was what I needed.

I think we had about 15 minutes before Anne and Sean arrived and we chatted away until we heard the doorbell go and it was time to head out. I loved the way Anne asked about the luggage, assuming this was all of it. that’s just what’s left to go into your car!

Next: Disney get it wrong… big time!
