You almost must search to find whole broccoli stalks in commercial American markets anymore. Most of the fresh broccoli is what’s called broccoli crowns, the florets cut from the stalks. I find the full stalks only in health food stores usually.
That must be a regional thing. We have 2 grocery stores (neither of which could even remotely be called a health food store) in our little town as well as a small Walmart Super Center. All 3 places have full stalk broccoli as well as crowns. In fact 2 of the stores offer "prepackaged" broccoli stalks as well as "loose/pick your own". If our little one-horse town has them in all 3 stores, I'm pretty confident that the rest of PA has them as well. And last week I was in central NY and bought some at a grocery store there as well.
