Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Re: charging prviledges

I've always allowed my older girls to have charging privileges on their cards once Disney considered them adults. (Of course - that used to be at 12, not 10!). I figure that if they are old enough to be responsible for going somewhere (food court, arcade, etc) without an adult with them, they are old enough to be responsible for taking care of the card, and it gives them a little freedom.

We've always discussed what the card is to be used for, and how to use it. I've never had any trouble with them losing one, or using it for anything other than what we agreed upon.

Me - on the other hand......... we won't go there!

Re: charging prviledges

During our last two trips we gave our son (8 & 9 a the time) charging privledges and never had any problems. The last trip we took the son (13) of friends and gave him full charging privledges and he was incredibly responsible with the card.

I vote for giving him the responsibility. I'm sure he'll do wonderfully.

If I felt my child was old enough to take care of my younger kids at WDW, I think I'd be able to also let him/her have charging priveledges on our room. Just set down the rules of how it is to be used and where it should be kept safe.

[/ QUOTE ] I agree with this, and he'll need the room key if he's babysitting at the resort. I think I'd give him privledges. We gave my oldest privledges when we were on our trip last November, just for the reason you stated, so I could stay with the little one at the pool and she could run to the food court and get drinks/snacks if we needed. She did incredibly well with it. It really depends on your kid. If he's old enough to be responsible for the little ones, responsibility with the card shouldn't be an issue.

Re: charging prviledges

We let our Dd charge when she was 10, and had no trouble. She is very responsible for her age. A gift card is a great idea though.
Our DD has a Visa Buxx card, and that is how we give her her allowence. She only has what money we put on the card, and she has a $100 limit per day. The limit can be raised by myself or my wife with a phone call, if she wants to make a big purchase.

Re: charging prviledges

I gave Zack charging priveleges last year at 11, and I'll definitely be doing it again this year. He really liked the freedom it gave him to buy his own things within a limit. I think giving our kids safe opportunities to be responsible with money is important. I didn't have a clue about credit cards and the like when I turned 18. Plus, last time he managed to buy some small gifts for Christmas for me as well!

Re: charging prviledges

It really depends on the youngster. My kids had charging priveledges when they were 11(DD) and 9(DS) respectively, but now it would be different. On the next trip, I can't imagine letting DS have anything of the sort since he is going through a "rebellious" stage. The CM at the front desk will ask you about charging when they set up your cards at check in; if you later change your mind later, you cna always ask them to change the card. Enjoy your trip

I say give him the card with privilages. First, I think your son is a pretty responsible 13YO. Second, if you trust him not to lock his siblings in the closet while you are out (my sister would have done this to me), then he should be trusted with the card.

I think in this case he should be allowed charging privileges. It's not like he's going to be going to the parks and taking advantage of it. He may need (want) to get drinks or snacks for everyone while you're out.

Re: charging prviledges

My daughter had charging priviles on her card when we went of the crusie in April. I held the card most of the time, but I let her sign for her purchases in the retail stores. She loved. She's asked for a Disney Credit Card when we go in two weeks. I am getting her a Disney Merchandise Card, that you can get at guest services. It will have $100 on it for her to spend over the 10 days we are there. Its a great way to teach her how to spend wisely. She is 7.

I work at a financial services firm and I love it when parents teach their kids about spending and saving wisely. I agree with jimmymac, kids don't learn unless we trust them to do the right thing, make their own decisions, and live with the consequences of their actions.

Re: charging prviledges

My DD was 12 on our last trip & she could charge on her card. She never even used it without asking first or I would tell her to go and get something on her own. She's not the type of kid who'd go crazy. She was very excited to sign for her own purchase.

Re: charging prviledges

You could get Disney Dollars and he can use them about everywhere. You can either get them at the disney store or Disney world. I know that they just got new chicken little $1 bills at the Disney store where I work.
