Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

I agree with most everyone they should leave this ride alone, my first trip to Disneyland was when I was 5 and that is the ride that stuck out in my head forever. When I took my DH to WDW when I was 25 and he was 29 I could not wait for him to see that ride. And his year I can't wait to share it with my 5 year old. They should leave it alone new is not always improved or appreciated.

As someone who saw the original at the NY World's Fair in '64 and '65, I am concerned about changes that might tilt the theme from world unity to something glorifying one country in particular. I don't think there's room for Sam the Eagle, or Walt's personal brand of flag-waving in this attraction. If Walt, of all people, didn't do it in his own day, I don't think we need it today.

There is room for a touch more U.S.A. than is currently present, the same way one sees clear representations of the U.K. and other nations. I can understand the response of people today, wondering where the USA is - the representation is pretty subtle - cowboys, surfers, native Americans (who could be from any number of countries), etc. For the original attraction, dedicated to UNICEF and sponsored by Pepsico (which was actively expanding internationally), it was probably thought that it would be in poor taste to feature the host nation prominently as part of a salute to the whole world's children.

There's probably room to tweak things a little. The problem is, where to find the space to do it? I do think it's ironic to destroy a rainforest to meet this goal, but what other locations would be any better? No matter what, something has to go in order to make a major change. So, why not something more subtle? I don't think you have to tear something else down to enhance the U.S. presence.

Hey, you could slip Sam the Eagle in somewhere - he's already a puppet, right? There's plenty of air space to work with.

What's very, very important to me is that the overall message is not lost. Listen to the lyrics, and don't lose sight of them. It's hard to share and appreciate what we have in common if one nation is put ahead of the others.

I agree. I took my kids on the ride last year, it was my first time as well. It was nice, whole hearted. Why change it?

oh, no, no, no, no, NO!!! they can NOT screw around with Mary Blair!!!!! This is the ONE ride at Disney that really has M.B. written all over it and they want to "modernize" it i suppose. That's all fine and well so long as they don't lose the original styles and innocence. Those themes are what makes It's A Small World what it is, and I can't stand to lose that.

Dave, I could not agree more. Especially the way things are in the world today, Disney of all places should be promoting a message of world peace and friendship. And it would truly be a tragedy to symbolically "tear down the rainforest" in order to build up the United States

Both DL and WDW welcome and delight guests from all over the world, and the beloved animated movies honor and celebrate stories and legends from many countries and cultures. I hope that Disney re-thinks this and keeps the original spirit and heart of It's A Small World alive.

Well I love Its A Small World, but am willing to give it a chance. Adding Johnny Depp to the Pirates ride turned out pretty good I thought. I hope they don't add Micky or Minnie to the ride. That would not seem right. But some of the more exotic characters would fit in pretty well I think!!! Like a certain someone on a magic carpet maybe???

Well, maybe here's something we can do, so the powers that be hear our voices:

Save the Rainforest, Save the Small World

Just found this link on the original blog page. Please, if you want Disney to keep the original intent and spirit of It's a Small World, let them know!

Here's an LA Times article about the controversy, seems to be heating up:

Disneyland is jeered over ride restyling - Los Angeles Times

Where o where is Roy Disney at a time like this?

I have ambivalent feelings about the proposed changes. On the one hand, the purist in me loves It's a Small World just the way it is now in spite of the lack of representation of both the U.S. and Canada for that matter. On the other hand, I can also remember how alarmed I was when I originally learned that Disney was going to be making changes to Pirates of the Caribbean. I ended up being delighted with the new version of POC because they didn't destroy anything in the original but simply added wonderful new touches. I'm crossing my fingers that the same thing happens with It's a Small World.

I hope they don't change the original ride. I posted about this awhile back in another thread here and where someone else posted that change is inevitable..... well, a classic like this should not be changed. The one at Disnayland is much, much more elaborate and "engrossing" than the one at WDW. Perhaps they will improve upon the one at WDW instead? One can always fantasize.....
