Thank goodness for insurance!!!!!!!!!

We just ordered a new insulin pump for DS who is a T1D.
Since he had already paid his deductible and most of his OOP costs, the total for the new pump, CGM, new test kit and 3 months supplies (except the test strips) was $381.62!!!

There was an invoice in the box...costs for the pump and pump supplies...$11,593.89!!!! And we haven't received the CGM yet...with it's invoice. Will be very interesting to see what the cost before insurance is on that as well!

HOLY TOLEDO!!!!! Are you kidding me???? Getting this for DS pretty much made up for the last 29 years of paying into my employer insurance! I am still pretty much in shock over the cost of this! It does have to last a minimum of 5 years, but even so...

My heart goes out to all those souls out there without insurance or with cruddy insurance. And I will count my blessings each day that I have a decent policy!

I did a similarly huge when I saw one of the statements for the chemo I had, nearly $35000, and that was just the drugs.

A relative told me one reason for such a high price on my statement and likely your invoice is that medical providers bill inflated amounts to people’s insurance to cover their costs for providing treatment, drugs, etc. to the uninsured.

I don’t know if that’s true, but it wouldn’t surprise me. All part of the for-profit healthcare game.

I am going to try and get ahold of the local chapter of the JDRF and see if they can use any of the supplies we have left from his old pump and kit...they are not interchangeable but maybe someone else who doesn't have insurance could use them.

Medical bills are obscene. I just paid $150 for meds that cost me nothing on my former insurance. I guess poor people are just expected to suffer and die.

I am so not surprised! 2010 my son & I got am allergic reaction to poison ivy- my son had Chip but I had no insurance. The bill I received for me was Ridiculous, since all was done was a doctor checking me out and him writing a few prescriptions! I fought and the hospital paid my bill.

And Yes I will be one of those uninsured because my health insurance expires this Friday. I will try to stay healthy

The CGM just arrived.

The total on that is $5779.42...But it includes 3 months of supplies!

That puts the total of all this stuff at $17,373.31. My first, second and third cars together cost less than that!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Boggles the mind!! Again...I am sooooo grateful for my insurance.

I have had several insurances over the past few years and the amount of prescription drugs varies from company to company-same drug, same pharmacy. How much I would have paid absent insurnace is what changes. I am now on medicare and if I provider charges $500., medicare may pay $85.00. Thqat is the most the provider is paid including payment by my supplement.

I don't want to discourage you but I have a cabinet full of old supplies from when I was on IV medication. My insurance paid a great deal for these and I hated to see them go to waste so I spent a good many hours looking for someone to take them-I did not have much luck. Best I could get was some animal rescue groups might use saline flushes. FYI, my insurance paid 10K a week for 7 months while I was on this infusion-that was just to the infusion company.

If someone could figure out a way of getting us out of this medical mess, it would be wonderful.

And to those uninsured, you can still get insurance through the health care exchange. My 3 month hospital stay in 2012 I am sure was well in excess of 1 million dollars. I doubt many of us have an extra 1 million to cover an unexpected bill.
