Alaska - A Month Long Adventure - Trip Report - Page 28 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Absolutely an amazing trip! I so appreciate your sharing all the details of your adventures and for those of us that have had a small taste of Alaska the desire to see more!
Thanks so much for all the time you spent on this trip report. (I'm sure it cut into your reading time. ) I enjoyed getting to go to Alaska vicariously and loved every single picture.
I've loved your TR. Not only are your pics amazing, you have such a way of capturing the moment with words. I know it's hard work to do these. Thank you so much for sharing your trip with us!
Thanks so much for following along. It was fun to do the TR.

I didn't know these smaller cruise boats existed and I'm now quite keen that when we do Alaska we will see it from the smaller boats.
Your photography skills were put to good use on this trip. You captured so many jawdropping , stunning & beautiful photos ! There are so many where you captured a mood and sense of place that is so hard to do! I always see it with my eye but can never capture it with a camera. You're very modest about your photos but I think you have a fantastic amount of talent with a camera.
Thanks so much for sharing! Looking forward to your next adventure.
Thanks for the kind words. LOL - 116 photos on the last day - yes, many stunning ones - like this one: Having refreshments with Leonardo:

I loved my trip to Alaska on the Wonder, but if I ever go back, I want to do an Un-Cruise! Very interesting to see the breakdown of the number of photos you took and where. Where are you going next??
Thanks, Laurie - I got the report done just in time, since our internet decided to crash for a few days. As for where next? Just local travel for awhile. Nothing big on the horizon.

And nope, never too many photos!!! I thouroughly enjoy them!!!
Thanks, Lisa - so many photos means too much work to cull out the decent ones, so I have to get better at figuring out what to shoot
Wow - I've found someone who takes a lot more photos than me! I didn't think that was possible!
What a great wrap-up to a wonderful trip report. I've loved reading every bit of it and I promise I will do a land tour of Alaska, although it may just take us a while to get there...
You and Mark will really enjoy a Land Tour - whenever you get a chance to go!

Glad you joined in, Pris, and it's fun that we were both in Alaska about the same time. I thank you for bringing the great weather.

Thanks for sharing your trip with us!
Glad the report helped get you excited about Alaska. I'd go back every year if I still lived on the West Coast!
Great finish! Thanks so much for taking us along for the ride and sharing your beautiful pictures!
Thanks, Marnie.

Thanks, Sharon - and yes, it did cut into my reading!!! But, I've made up for that in this past week - averaging about 2 books / day
I thoroughly enjoyed your TR Sharon. Thank you so much for taking us along on it. I am going to mention on last thing though - those "skeeter raquets" that you had in Alaska? I have about 5 of them in my house here in MA - I found them at Ocean State Job lot so if you want a relatively inexpensive (about $5) reminder of your time on land in Alaska, there's an Ocean State over in Belfast, I'm sure you could find one and even have the opportunity to use it too . Especially since it works well on flies and other bugs we swat.

Thanks Darlene - we'll check out the Job Lot (I've seen it, but haven't been in one yet). Lou did pick up one swatter from Amazon, but we can use more.)

Hmm, if you're doing local travel, how about doing little pictorial TR's of those? I think I'm addicted to your pics!
Thanks, Jeannie. I've been trying to talk Lou into a big trip next summer, but he's resisting. I will report on anything local if it's interesting

Wonderful TR and really gorgeous pictures. Loved every minute of your trip. This is really one to remember. Glad to see you made it home with no issues. Since you missed so many examples of wildlife, are you planning on going again to catch up?

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the TR. I definitely want to return, just have to talk DH into it. The only wildlife I wanted to see that we really missed was bears closer up than what we saw from the small ship. That will be a goal for the next trip, and we will schedule the time and location for that purpose. Of course, I'd love to see more otters, puffins, whales, and more - but we did pretty well with those.
The real drawback is the flight from the East Coast to Alaska - next time, we may try to schedule a stopover on the West Coast first.
Apologies for bumping this old story. Thought I would include the link to the final "blog/photo journal" I did for this trip. I didn't get it done until November, and never would have been able to complete it had I not done the TR here right after the trip. I guess it's another type of digital scrap booking.
It is pretty much the same as already reported in the TR, with perhaps a few more photos.
It really is an awesome report and blog, Sharon. I should do something like that for my Africa trip, but I wouldn't know how to start. Your photos are so magnificent.
