I think it has become a new norm, but I am from an earlier time when only one was done for the first baby. I did get a second shower when I was pregnant with Stefanie, but folks at our church were so excited that we were having another after losing our son Kevin. I felt a little awkward, but it was special. Personally, I don't get shower invites now, but for my nieces and nephews who are on their 2nd, 3rd, etc., I buy a gift that I deliver when I meet the baby the first time.
Yes, I think this generation sees it as a celebration of a new life, a way to welcome the baby in a public way. We just didn't as a society know how to handle the gift thing, so it stuck just like a true "shower".
I am a gift-hater. Don't like buying them or giving them, generally, and I think we outspend our means in gift giving on the whole as a society.
I am taking a small, quiet activist position by chosing low-cost, clutter-free gifts for most gift-giving occasions. Fruit, chocolate, etc. For a baby shower, I would probably chose socks or a cute t-shirt.
If it feels too weird, you can always regretfully decline the invite.
I am a grandparent, too so lots of great nieces and nephews , too. No showers for 2nd babies.
My nephew and his wife had a bay a couple of weeks ago, I wasn't able to make the naming so bought her a nice gift from their registry (a changing table). I think them not having a shower was fine and wanted to buy something equivalent to what I bought the other nieces,
