As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

This island is absoulutely gorgeous!!! It is so green and the water so blue. I think every picture you have taken is stunning. Thats so funny to see chickens everywhere too.

The photos of the canyon are breathtaking to say the least! I bet you could fool people with the below photo being from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and not Waimea Canyon!

Thank you for the history of Captain Cook. I knew there was a history there, I just wasn't sure of the connection. Do you how hard it was not to type Captain Hook? Oh my, my Disney side comes through every time. Funny to see another chicken, and of course you spotted cows! Interesting blowhole. I have seen some on the Western coast of the US, but of course not formed on a lava ledge like that.
Stunning!! That canyon is just stunning... I will have to add a day trip over to Kauai when we go visit Haleakala and Volcanoes National Parks.
How funny - that's how I started out too! I knew I had to go to Maui and Big Island for the national parks, but I heard so many wonderful things about Kauai that I had to add that in as well, and I'm so glad I did.
In truth, if/when (I want it to be when, but you just never know...) we go back, we'll probably visit Kauai for the day (there is a reason for this, which you'll find out about in due course...) and then fly to Maui, stay the night there (there's a hotel in the Concierge Collection we could use our points for), and explore that a bit more before flying back to Aulani.
Kauai looks like the most beautiful island so far!
I think they were all beautiful and in very different ways, so it's tough to pick a favourite. I think probably Maui ended up being our favourite. By the way, I'm taking O'ahu out of this equation, as I really don't think you can include that, as it's got so many more people in it and of course it's home to Aulani, which skews things a bit...

That is your Disney side coming through! It's funny you say that, as that's never an issue for me, as I grew up learning about Captain Cook, so probably knew about him at the same age as I knew about Captain Hook...
I was worried for a while that we wouldn’t be able to see any of Poipu, as it all seemed to be privately run hotels, which had their own private access to the beach, which was fair enough, but fortunately we saw a sign to the beach and headed that way. There we found a restaurant right by the beach called Brennecke’s. Mark commented that it was probably pretty expensive, but when we parked up and looked at the menu, it wasn’t that bad and it had a pretty good location, so we decided to give it a go.
There was a shop downstairs and she told us to go straight up. As it was about 1:30pm now, I thought that they may say that they were full, but although they were busy, they still had space and we ended up with a table right by the window with a lovely view. Thankfully, it was out of the sun and with the fans going in here, it was a pleasant temperature.
I decided to order a Koloa spice rum punch, made up of New Koloa spice rum, and Brennecke’s own guava, passion fruit, and orange juice fruit punch, after checking with our server, the lovely Shelli, that I’d be Ok with it. It seems I’ve developed an allergy to dark rum, which is not good, as I like sweet cocktails, and most of them happen to have dark rum in them. She said I’d be Ok with the New Koloa spice rum, but brought me lots of water just to be on the safe side, which I was very grateful for – and for the record, I was fine!
I went for the char broiled Mahi Mahi, grilled eggplant, and goat cheese salad, and it was wonderful. I polished off all the fish, eggplant, and cheese (the cheese was wrapped in the eggplant), but there was too much salad for me, so I ended up leaving most of it.
Mark had the chicken breast sandwich, char broiled chicken topped with sun dried tomato aioli sauce, applewood smoked bacon, crispy cabbage, and feta cheese on a Kaiser bun. When it turned up, it was very unusual, but as Mark said, unusual in a good way.
We both still had a bit of room, so we looked at the dessert menu. I went for the Bob’s favourite ice cream pie, coffee ice cream, macadamia nuts, chocolate fudge, and coconut on a chocolate cookie crust, which seemed like heaven to me, as I love coffee ice cream, and I was certainly not disappointed.
Mark had the chocolate lava cake, decadent chocolate cake, warm chocolate ganache centre, Lappert’s vanilla bean ice cream, and raspberry sauce, and really enjoyed it. I had a taste of it and was very impressed with it too.
This place had turned out to be a real winner. In all, with the tip, it came to $79, which was a lot of money, but then again, I felt it was worth it, as the food had been very good and of course, it was in a superb location.

The meal had been very quick, which was good, as we still had to get back for the helicopter ride and I had something I wanted to do beforehand. We left with plenty of time, but we had slow moving traffic, although nothing as bad as we’d seen in Honolulu, which pushed our arrival time back.
I love Brenneckes!! My husband and I ate there the last time we went and my their drinks are good, but also strong..lol. Your drink looked amazing..as did the food. I hope you enjoyed Poipu! Question: did you happen to see any Monk Seals while you were there?...they come up in the beaches during the day...I'm very excited to hear more about your trip!
