Living the Dream and remembering the Bagman COMPLETED 5/16 - Page 7 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

I love NYC in Times Square at night. It was so fun and bright and great for pictures....would I want to live in NYC...heck no, but for a visit it is fun.
The subway system is so confusing to me. Luckily my Uncle Geoff goes quite a bit and he was able to lead us to which train we needed.
We had to buy a certain amount on our subway cards and they make it so you have extra left. It's so dumb. My friend says it's because they know they people will have 50-75 cents left on each on and most tourist will not even care....well I showed them!!! I gave them to my NYC friend to use up. hahahaha.

Living the Dream and remembering the Bagman UPDATED 5/5
Wow, Mrs. Unhelpful sounds like a perfect name for her. For future trips, you may want to know that you can share one subway pass between the two of you in NYC. I always find that much easier to do.
I loved the elevator ride at One World Observatory! I just thought it was so well done and wish I could have done it again.
That is one heck of a Disney store! I love that the peas were displayed right above the Eeyores. Our favorites! Bummer you missed Cirque but sounds like you made the right decision.
Oh it was. I just needed an early night to recover.

An adventurous start to the day with McD and the subway. Wow that's kinda cool that they have a movie of sorts while you're riding the elevator. But I can see how that would totally mess with my DH and his motion sickness.
I think a lot of people might get motion sick, now you say that. Perhaps they should have a warning about that?
Quote:
Actually, he would never even go up there due to fear of heights..... Bummer you were clouded in, but at least you saw all the displays and such.
My mom and I visited the World Trade center in June of 2001. We purchased the tacky photo, and indeed the quality wasn't stellar. But now I'm so glad we have it.
Oh gosh, completely. We went up the World Trade Center on our honeymoon. It was Mark's first time, but I think it was my second or third time and it was weather just like we had on this day - low cloud. I literally took one photo and that was it, the cloud closed in. I remember Mark saying "why have we come here?" and a couple of years later, he said to me "I'm so glad we did go there".
Caught up here now too.

Oh my goodness, I am so with you about that!

We did find that out later in the day...

I'd definitely do it again... and hopefully see the view. However, I don't think NYC is high on our list of places to go back to. It's just been there, done most of that.

We made our way out of the One World Observatory and headed over to the 9/11 memorial.
I have seen lots of photos of this, and I honestly didn’t think from the photos that it looked to be the size of the footprint of one of the towers. I figured it would look much bigger in reality, but genuinely it didn’t. It looked absolutely tiny to me.
It was beautifully done, such a simple idea, although I have no idea there was a huge amount of thought went into it. I genuinely feel if I knew a victim, I’d be pleased with the memorial that’s been made in their name. I was surprised to only see a few of these…
I thought there would be a lot more. Something else I was surprised by, and not in a good way, was the behaviour of some of the other people there, talking selfies and photos of each other. I just feel, and maybe I’m old fashioned this way, but there are some places I don’t think this is appropriate. I was just relieved no-one asked me to take their photo, as I would’ve refused, politely, and explained my reasons.
We headed over to the 9/11 museum, as it was coming up to 10:00am, the time we were due to go in. Already I was glad we’d pre-purchased our tickets, as there was a line, although not that long, for anyone who hadn’t. They were advertising that tickets were still available for today, so naively, I thought that perhaps it wouldn’t be that busy…
We headed inside, and through what I felt was a very lax security check, especially given what this remembers. I noticed the security guard didn’t properly check what was in our bags, which did concern me.
The first thing you see are these…
We were later to learn from talking to a member of staff that apparently about a week after 9/11 happened, there were discussions about how to commemorate what happened and those who had died, and there was already talk of a museum at that early stage. They started to mark a number of things to save for a possible museum, after getting information from curators at museums around America. That’s why if you look carefully in the shots, you can see “save” written on in yellow paint…
Next: understanding the enormity of what you’re seeing
I have to agree with you about some people's behavior at places place that. The people that died there deserve some respect. The memorial isn't quite what I expected. Thanks you the pictures. Sorry about the zero visiblity.

I know what you mean about the memorial. We'd seen lots of photos, so we had a good idea of what to expect, but even so, it still surprised me in some way.
The memorial looks beautiful. Last time I was at Ground Zero was 2 months after the tragedy. Quite a change from then.
Oh my goodness. I really cannot even begin to imagine what that was like, even after having been to the museum and seen the images etc. I bet that's something that will stay with you forever.

It's uncanny the photos you captured! Peter Gay, Kenneth Waldie, and David Kovalcin all worked for my company (although at different locations, so I didn't know them). Andrew Charles Curry Green was in my high school graduating class.
Too bad you were just in the clouds for ONe WTC Observatory and couldn't see a thing. Other than that it looks like you enjoyed your time in the building with the history and info.
It does amaze me with some people and the selfies at the reflection pool, which is a memorial. Looks like a good start to your time here and looking forward to the rest of it. I have yet to visit this museum, but plan too.
I was here about a month or so after 9/11 for a U2 concert that night and seeing all of the destruction up close and the smell of the air from the still smoldering buildings as well as the dust from the pulverized buildings overwhelmed me. Just seeing it first hand was just something.
