Taking A Small Bite of The Big Apple! - Page 2 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Don't know if you'll have time in Manhattan for this, but I just attended the exhibit of Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum (2 East 91 Street, NY NY 10128) -- it's in Carnegie's "simple retirement home" which is a work of art itself. Here's an article on it: NYC's Cooper-Hewitt to host Van Cleef exhibition | JA New York
They have a little quick shop type of cafe, and we were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the salads. We had a nice little lunch there.
They offer free guided tours of the exhibit at noon. My friend and I had a blast looking at the jewelry on our own, and then stuck around for the tour. One of our favorite experiences from this visit -- and a very girlie thing to do with some gal pals!
I'll try to order up some warm weather for you, but don't hold your breath! Looking forward to meeting up with you!
Yeah see what you can do about some warmer weather, will ya? I'm not particularly looking forward to freezing my tail off! But, even if you can't warm it up, I'm still looking forward to meeting up, too!

Have fun, whatever you do -- I'm sure you will!
Thanks for the suggestion! I'll mention it to my friend, for sure! That sounds fun!
Only two more work shifts until it's time to go... I work in 2 hours, and then tomorrow morning I have to take Meri to get her hair cut, and go buy a gift card for Samantha (her Christmas present is coming to her late, but in person). Then Meri has a birthday party to go to at 1230pm, which will kill 2 hours. Then I have 2 hours to pack and clean before I have to head to work again. Phew!
On Saturday night, I plan on staying at work to close, and then a friend of mine and I are going to head out to a bar and grille for an hour or so, to get a bite to eat (and to load me up with sweet tea / caffeine, lol). I figure on getting home around 1am, and then just playing online and whatnot until 415am (which will come quickly, because remember, I'm losing an hour in there, because it will jump from 2am to 3am when we "spring forward").
I just know that if I try to get a couple of hours of sleep, I'll be in worse shape than if I stay up all night. I always feel worse after 2-3 hours than I do if I don't sleep at all. And I know I can nap when I get to my friend's house in Chicago.
So, I'll be in rare form on Sunday at the airport. And full of coffee. LOL!
The flights on Sunday look pretty rotten, but at the same time, knowing how these things work, I think we'll get out with no trouble. Of course, I'll check in from the airport, lol, to let you know...
Then Monday morning's flight to NY looks perfectly fine, so that will be good at least!
Good luck with those flights! Can't imagine being stuck too long at the airport with as little sleep as you'll have had. YAWN!!!
Hope you have a great time in NYC!

Ok, so I'm sitting here with Revlon "Dark Ash Brown" hair dye in my hair. I've got another 18 minutes to go... Meri and I got hair cuts yesterday. She got hers restyled (it was getting WAY too long, she said), and I just got mine trimmed and got some more layers added in. The hairdresser that did Meri's hair was so great with her. She just carried on a conversation like she was speaking to an adult, and Meri just loved it. I know technically you're supposed to dye your hair and then cut it, but whatever.
I thought I was going to get to sleep in today... but no such luck. I had to get up at 6am to check myself in for the flight (standby is 'first checked in-first on' for this particular flight - the one out of Chicago goes by seniority, so it's not as big of a deal). Anyway, so then I went back to sleep for a little while, but Meri had me up and at em at 8am. *sigh* I'd love a nap, but with a birthday party from 1230-230, and my cousin stopping by at 3pm before I go to work at 4pm... well... if you can find a window for a nap in there, you let me know.
At least my laundry is done. So that's something. Once my hair is done, I have to throw a bunch of candy in a carry-on bag for my friend in Chicago. I have two boxes of salt water taffy, a box of chocolate covered caramel, and half of a bucket of Halloween candy for her, lol.
I've got something like five pairs of jeans packed, and then a lot of long sleeved shirts and sweaters, and a few tshirts to wear over the long sleeved shirts. I figure it will be all about the layers. I still need to remember the hats and gloves, though. I'm a massive over-packer, as a rule. We get 2 free checked bags each, so I'm checking two on the way up, and probably three on the way back (because we'll have souvenirs, and some clothes from my friend).
Oh shoot, and I need to go up to the cafe to get my paycheck! Duh. Want to get that in the bank today, too. It will probably be a $3 paycheck, but, hey, $3 will get me a slice of pizza somewhere, or a tall decaf latte at Starbucks!
This will be more interesting when I post pictures from Chicago and NY, lol. Sorry it's kinda boring. Ok, it's very boring. But photos make everything better. And no, you can't see a photo of my hair dye.
I'm hoping if I get to Chicago on the early flight tomorrow, that we can go downtown. There's a Disney store there, lol, and it sure would be fun to hit two Disney stores in two major cities on one trip. LOL!
Well... I'll likely post an update late tonight, and some photos tomorrow, for sure. I am really excited! I get to meet two PP'ers in NY, and I get to eat REAL pizza (yummy!!!) and bagels and see Central Park and Times Square (I'm hoping to get to the wax museum, too, but we'll see).

Ok so it's nearly 1:00am central time... I just got back from an INSANE night at work. A wedding party came in (bride and groom included) and it turned out to be something like 16 of them. They were wonderful but holy cow, I was BUSY. Plus I had 4 other tables that were running me to death. It was worth it, but I'm wore OUT!
After work, as planned, I went out with two coworkers and we got a bite to eat at a local bar and grill. Now I'm here, finalizing the last minute detail packing. Then I'll take a nice hot bath and scrub the grime off of me (I always feel so gross when I get home from work).
After that, I'll just read or surf the net until it's time to wake mom and Meri up to go. Meri is sleeping in her clothes tonight. It's just easier that way for all involved. I've got my Starbucks gift card at the ready, lol. There's a Starbucks on the way to my gate (Memphis is a teeny tiny airport, and we always leave from the same exact gate) so I know I'll hit that.
Turns out I'm checking 3 bags. Meri's suitcase, my suitcase and a small bag that is chock full of candy, lol. That bag will be emptied in Chicago, as I'm bringing the candy for her. Then the bag will be stuffed into my suitcase for the flight to NY, and can be filled with souvenirs to bring home!
I've got Meri's small rolling backpack filled with coloring books, her portable DVD player and a couple of movies. Oh and her purse that has a few toys (the Handy Manny tools, among other things).
Then my purse has some more DVD's and a spare set of Meri's clothes, and then a few other little things. And last but not least will be my Twilight tote bag which will carry my laptop and charger. I'm charging my cell and iPod now.
I'll update you all in a few hours... either from the airport or from Chicago! I'd say I'm excited, but honestly, I won't be truly excited until I'm on the plane to Chicago and away from the gate.
