Does Disney Owning Marvel Affect Universal Park?

Universal Studios uses alot of Marvel characters, not only as rides, but as characters throughout their park. Now that Disney owns them, will this affect Universal? Seems kind of weird to have your competitor use your intellectual property to compete with you.

I read something recently that part of the agreement when Disney bought Marvel was that Universal got exclusive park rights to them in FL. So I wouldn't expect to see Universal's rides have to go away nor will they show up at WDW. (The other Disney parks in the world, yes, but not WDW)

I don't think Universal has the rights to all Marvel characters (deals like that are always more expensive than simply buying the rights you actually need), so I expect we'll be seeing some of the older characters that Disney's bringing back. For example, they just put a "skin" on one of the monorails for the Fantastic Four movie that Disney is releasing this year. I'd imagine they couldn't do that if USF had those rights locked up.

thought I read somewhere that universal had some contract for a couple years so the rides would still be there

Disney/Marvel: What Does Disney Actually Get?

This article is a couple years old, but it has a pretty good basic breakdown of the deal.

Thanks for finding that!

The following excerpt comes from Universal City Development Partners' (owner of Universal Studios Orlando) 10-K: "We have geographical exclusivity east of the Mississippi River with regard to the specific Marvel characters we utilize.
As I suspected, if Universal isn't using a character, Disney can (and there are a whole lot more characters in the Marvel universe than Universal uses). Or Disney could even license the rights to Universal if the price was right. (This is like the big money Disney paid Warner Brothers for the right to show the Harry Potter films on TV and cable.)
