Cancel WDW Vacation because of FLU?

Been planning this vacation for a yr now, 6 weeks to go to check in.
What should we do, DD has health issues, right now in good health. We have had our flu shots.
Should we cancel & go later?, not to many options open for us.
Later is either too hot or too expensive.
Was there in May of 2011 way to hot for her.
Just down in the dumps,

I wasn't sure what you meant at first. I thought you were asking about if you had the flu should you go. Then I reread it and understand that you are afraid of contracting it when on vacation, especially with a health compromised child. The way I look at it, flu is everywhere currently. You probably have just as much chance of getting it on vacation as you do at home work or school. Go and have fun. Wash hands often and try not to touch too many surface you don't need to.

I'm not sure what your DD's health issues are but there are things you can do to provide extra protection. My DD is immunosuppressed and we do what we can to protect her. In addition to good hand hygeine, eat healthy, and be sure she gets enough sleep during vacation. During "sick season" when at shows, in line, etc my DH and I do our best to be a barrier between her and others around us meaning she sits in between us, etc. She also knows to turn away from anyone who is coughing and sneezing. We discourage her from dragging her hands along the railings in line. I will admit I worry alot during the winter and though I do limit some of the things my DD does during the winter due to all the illnesses I go with if it's fun for her let her do it (vacation is fun) and if it's not leave her home (running errands is not fun). Good luck with your decision. I know it's not an easy one. Hopefully the flu shot will protect all of you.

I would recommend staying away from the interactive queue. As fun as they are, I haven't known a single person to come out of the Dumbo tent without some sort of sinus infection, flu or cold.
Wash your hands OFTEN, i usually bring a nail brush with me to leave in the hotel room so everyone can scrub the germs out from under their nails at the end of the day.
Maybe pack a travel sized antibacterial soap in your bag instead of using the soap in the bathrooms? That soap never seems very effective to me.
You can request a VIP clean on the room as well.

I say go for it. The flu is everywhere. Make sure you have good trip insurance - one that would cover if you have to cancel at the last minute due to sickness or end up sick at the Doctors while you are there and have to cancel the rest of the trip.

Be extra careful with hand washing, try not to touch interactive stuff, or hand rails. Wash hands or use hand sanitizer before eating. I personally wouldn't do any buffets. (But I don't like them anyway. LOL)

I'd also ask for VIP cleaning of the room since you said your DD has health issues and I'd probably rent a car or if you have your own, take that to the parks to avoid the buses.

Good luck and have a great time!

Talk to your her doctor. See if he has any ideas about vitamins. Hand washing is very important this time of year not matter where you are. I would go just take precautions. You all will have a great time, just relax and bring lots of Germ-X....

Don't let her take any of her stuffies either into the parks. I don't know the age she is, but if you touch something, then touch her stuffies that she holds close to her face, that is asking for problems. All of my dd night time stuffies stay at home-never go to school.
I totally agree with the buffets. Love them, but they aren't germ free even at disney.
I would be more concerned about the airplanes.

I say go for it. Like the others, so long as you're regularly washing hands and trying to touch as few surfaces as possible, you should be fine.

We wouldn't cancel. You've all got your shots, and 6 weeks from now, this whole thing could have well run its course. And I agree with the others...eat right, don't get overtired and wash hands. Since most of the rides and events are outside, you probably have less of a chance of getting sick there than you do in an enclosed classroom, etc. So, perhaps, confirm with your child's doctor that it would be ok since you are worried about it.

I would not cancel. As the above poster mentioned, 6 weeks from now, things in the flu world may be very different. Have you considered having her wear a simple medical mask during the flight?

Thanks for all the replies!

We are driving down, the doctor says everything is okay to go. My Dh is the one that is afraid of catching something. We clean our hands & she has been taught not to touch anything unless it has been cleaned, wipe down with sanitizer or alcohol & not to touch her face unless she washes her hands.
We carry sanitizer & sanitizer wipes with us where ever we go.
We have asked for VIP Cleaning.
I think we will be fine, but they keep reporting on TV how bad the flu is, & DH keeps talking about it.
He told me that we will just have to wait & see.

It sounds to me like you're taking as many precautions as possible. From the reports on the news, I think we're all as likely to get it at the grocery store as at WDW.
All the folks going to work while sick or sending sick kids to school are spreading it, IMHO. Disney may be too much for them and a place they're skipping.

wash hands with santitizers often-get flu shots-takes 10 days for immunity build up before trip. Takes approx 2 days to get infected should someone sneeze-cough-etc on you.
