We went this past September during the last week of the month and had a great time! We were able to get the free dining plan and the crowds were very low. Most rides were a wait of 10 mins or less. It is still hot and humid in September, but the low crowds and free dining plan made it worth it.
My BFF and I went in mid September one year and it was great! The crowds were low, but the weather was still hot and humid. We went to the parks in the morning, break for lunch and hit the pool and then head back to the parks late afternoon. I've noticed free dining in the past couple of years offered in September.

With all the schools just getting back into session the crowds will be minimal. Just remember one thing - September and October are the most active months in our hurricane season down here. So while you can count on it to be pretty hot and humid, it could also be quite rainy. On the upside, I hear there's absolutely no lines on a super rainy day. And that would be awesome!
We usually go mid September-hope for the free dining offer. Weather is hot-humid and it does rain daily for a little while-we were rained out for MNSSHP.
Crowds were high for the Parades and MNSSHP last September
wait times maybe 5-10minutes except for Soaring[65minutes]-Toy Story[70minutes]
We like to go in September as well. Crowds are low. The weather is usually a bit cooler, but a few years ago in Sept we experienced a hot spell that was summer-like! Even the locals were complaining. There may be some rain, but many times it's just an afternoon shower and then it's sunny agan. If you're in the park, get your unbrellas out and stick it out. 20 minutes later when the sun comes out everything will be a walk on because so many people left the park.
As was mentioned September is hurricane season, but that never bothered us. In 2004 we got out just in the nick of time before Jeanne came back around and hit central Florida.
We have also done free dining a few times. It's a good deal, but if there are any resort discounts, you should compare to see which saves you more.
Have fun planning! We're going to be there in September this year as well.
We love Disney in September. We go every year over our birthdays. Weather is amazing and the lines aren't bad. Plus we have lucked out with free dining at that time which is awesome
