Renting points when you already are a DVC member

For my parents' 40th anniversary, the whole family is going to Disney. I am willing to use my points to pay for as much as I can but I don't have enough. Is there a way to rent points and have them added to my pool? Or should get reservations with rented points and then add mine as soon as I can to hope we get the same resort? I need a 2BR and 3 studios to fit everybody and we have to go during school vacation as DF is a teacher.

In terms of making and managing the reservations, the easiest approach is to look for a TRANSFER of points.

Problem is each member can only do ONE transfer per year so it can be difficult to find a transfer partner. Not everyone who wants to rent a few points is willing to burn their one transfer. Some will charge a higher price for a transfer rather than a traditional rental. And since you can only receive one transfer of points, you would have to get all of the points you need from one person.

Also bear in mind that transferred points retain their original Home resort. If you plan to book more than 7 months out, you have to get points for the resort you wish to book. And you'll have to make sure you get them in the right Use Year for your travel dates.

You CAN do a rental but like any other rental transaction, you would have zero control over the rooms. You could not add requests to the reservation or book the Dining Plan for members of your party since the rental reservation(s) would not be under your member ID. You could not book DME for the rented rooms. All of that would have to be facilitated by the renter.

You would also be subject to the renter's cancellation policies if anyone happens to drop out. With a transfer, all of the points are added to your account so you have full control to manage the points and reservations.

Arranging for someone to transfer their points into your account would definitely be the easiest for you, all around. I don't think there is any way to "combine" your points with another member's points to book a single reservation. In other words, if you are 9 points short to complete one reservation, you couldn't "borrow' those 9 points from another member unless they actually transfer the needed points to you.

I am not sure how many additional points you need, but another option would be to purchase "one time" points from DVC. You can buy up to 24 points during a single use year, and these points cannot be banked or returned once purchased. These points cost $15 per point, and you can only use them for reservations 7-months or less away.

Good luck with your planning -- it sounds like you are planning a fantastic family get-together.

I recently did this. I have a friend who had extra points and I was short for our next trip so she transfered her available points to my account. It was very easy to do. We actually did a three way call with DVC to make sure everything was going to work.
