Packing food in checked luggage?

I usually always pack some food in our luggage and have now heard things about that that is a no-no now becuase of the sniffing dogs. I usually pack things like poptarts, Nutragrain bars, etc. Do you pack stuff like this?

Re: Packing food in checked luggage?

Denise, last time we shipped down a box so it would be there when we arrived. Had snacks/granola, juice boxes, diapers, wipes, etc. I had also heard the warnings about not to pack food in luggage anymore, but frankly we just didn't want to cart it all down there and it was just easier to send ahead of time.

Are you renting a car? It may be easier to stop at a grocery. We found one not too far from the airport and away from WDW, and it was very reasonably priced.

I'm sure people still do send stuff down in luggage though.

Re: Packing food in checked luggage?

I always pack some goodies in our luggage, both checked and carry-on and have never run into a problem yet. (Our last trip was Dec. 9-23/03). It's usually stuff like you described and snacks like tubes of Pringles potato chips etc. We're coming down from Canada so one would think if anyone was going to run into a hassle with that sort of thing, it would be us folks crossing over from another country. But everything has always been smooth sailing for us and the food in our luggage has never created any problems whatsoever.

Re: Packing food in checked luggage?

Thanks Joy and Marnie! I think maybe we might ship a box down before we go. I guess I'll have to think more about this once PS get made and we can figure out just how much snacks we want to have. I've already made a list of close stores that we could visit too. I'll have to discuss this one with mom and see what she thinks. Thanks again!

Re: Packing food in checked luggage?

We went down to WDW in January. I did pack a small box of cereal on the return trip (extra didn't want to waste). My bag did get opened. The box of cereal box was opened (it was still sealed in the plastic). I totally forgot about the no food thing. I did however pack all small things, and private things in ziploc bags. This way they could see them, but the items were less likely to fall out of your suitcase.

Oh man...does this mean if I stock up on Chocolate Mickey Pretzels and other candy I have to ship them home? Or carry them on... That would be interesting getting my carryon checked and it being nothing but Food... lol

Re: Packing food in checked luggage?

We always pack snacks in our bag and had to pack them on the way back (micaroni and cheese, coffee, chocolate covered mickey pretzels) and our bag was inspected, nothing opened or lost. But from my understanding food sets off some of the inspection thing. But it wasn't a hassle by any means.
