| City of the Week: Merritt Island OK, not exactly a city, but, it is REALLY close to Port Canaveral, and we are still on that cruise theme...  Merritt Island dates back to the 1800's, and is the birthplace of those wonderful Florida exports, Indian River oranges and grapefruits!  The island gained popularity in the 50's and 60's with the coming of the Space Age. But with progress also comes change. Many of the small towns that populated the island faded into oblivion, and now Merritt Island belongs to no official city.Merritt Island stills houses some 36,000 residents, along with numerous fish and game species. Take a look at the Official Merritt Island National Wildlife Site, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge - Titusville Florida. My personal favorite part is the Eaglecam Intro Page! | Merritt Island is one of our favorite places. The Wildlife REfuge offers lots of free and low cost programs, too. We always try to get to manatee overlook, where we have consistently seen manatees. Diane Diane |
