Question about tolls

everyone! I just have a quick question...

I am planning a trip from MCO to KSC, then back to WDW. I want to make sure I have enough change for tolls. We don't have those in AZ, so I am a little out of the loop! How much change should I bring? What is the average toll fee? Do you have to have exact change? Do they take debit/cc's if you don't have enough cash?

Sorry for so many questions, but you know I want to be prepared!

We drove last year and encountered the toll highways for the first time. We don't have them here in southern Illinois either. If I remember right, the toll was pretty nominal. If you bring a couple of rolls of quarters and maybe a roll of dimes, you should be well prepared. There's probably a place on the Department of Transportation website for Florida toll highways that would tell you exactly what the toll is, but I don't remember it being a lot.

That was a great suggestion, ! I went on their website, Toll Calculator XML version 2.0, in case anyone else has this same question. I wasn't able to figure it out. There is a phone number on there, so I called. The lady was extremely nice and helpful. In case anyone else is interested, the toll from MCO to KSC is $1.25, and from KSC to WDW it is $2.75.

For Florida tolls, think mostly in terms of dollar bills rather than change. Most major toll booths in the Orlando area collect $1.00 or more. However, the toll booths at minor exits (such as the exit for John Young Pkwy off of 417), are unstaffed and usually run around $0.50. For those you'll definitely need coins.

The toll between KSC and WDW also varies, depending on whether you stay on 528 the whole distance (to the junction with I-4), or you take 528 to 417 in order to avoid I-4. You'll pay about $0.50 more if you use 417.

We always collect quarters before we leave and I keep them in labeled tubes (used, cleaned, large mini M&M tubes). We have a tube for tolls, one for laundry money and one for penny/quarter pressing.

Here is a tip - When you are coming back from KSC - Take exit 16 off the Beach Line Expressway (rt 528, used to be called the bee line). This will put you on the Central Florida Greenway, rt 417 south (there are signs for disney). Take exit 6 off of there. Drive 5 minutes and you will be on Epcot Center Drive! I believe this costs about the same in tolls (maybe a dollar more).

Here's a list of all the tolls on the Bee Line Expressway:

Florida State Road 528 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

From what I can tell, it'll cost $2.75 to get from WDW to KSC if you hit the Bee Line Expressway from I-4. You can use the coin lanes if you're getting a roll of quarters. There are also manned booths with toll collectors that make change. I haven't really found a difference in speed between the change booths and the coin lanes. If you get back onto the Bee Line at the points of re-entry when exiting the road, some of those booths are unmanned, so you will need exact change for them.

There are quite a few toll roads around here: 417 (Greenway), 528 (Beachline/formerly the Bee Line), 408 (east/west expressway) and the FL Turnpike (429 is the # I think, I don't use it). Having bills and coins are a good idea, as some booths are exact change only (as previously stated). I have found that some toll roads have toll booths more frequently than others. They are not all "managed" by the same company. I have a Sun Pass, which allows me to go thru any Sun Pass or E Pass lanes on these roads. The transponder is hooked to a credit card. One of my friends that live in PA bought a pass, as they come down around 3 times per year and rent a car. It is a thought if you come frequently.

Safe driving!
