| How far down, for how long, and what kind of budget? You'll probably find less expensive in the upper keys, between Marathon and the main land. On average, waterfront is about twice as expensive as non-waterfront. I'm headed out for a day at the shooting range, but tonight I'll grab some links for you to look at...

| Bill will be much more informative on this subject than me, but, we spent a day in Key West last year as a port of call from our cruise, and we absolutely fell in love with the area! It is very funky, laid back and friendly. In fact, we are planning on returning there at some point to spend a long weekend!

| Here's a good place to start for planning purposes... Florida Keys travel info - Key Largo to Key West - diving, fishing, snorkeling and attractions You can link from here. If you narrow it down a little, I can try to see what specific sites there are...

| 2 years ago we were in the same situation, and we booked the Holiday Inn at Key Largo, which was exactly what we were after. Some of the rooms overlook the canal, the original African Queen is moored there, and the grounds were stunning. Rooms were clean, modern and comfortable, and the restaurant was candlelit in the evening. The price was really cheap at the time, and we had no bad experiences there at all, and are going to go again soon hopefully. |

| Stay at the Radisson in Key West. Unless you're a diver or into fishing, I would not advise staying in the upper keys. My husband and I are divers and we only stay in Key West. Not much to do at all in the upper keys. The Radisson in Key West has the sleep number beds and it has a view of the gulf, and it is on the main drag that will take you into the downtown portion of the island (Duvall St, Mallory Square, etc...). I just booked our rooms for several weekend trips this summer and the average cost per night was $120.00 per night. They have a very nice pool and a restaurant on site. There is no such thing as Key West+ waterfront = Budget. About 5 years ago developers started buying up the smaller mom and pop places and they have built mega timeshare resorts on the water that average $350.00 a night. I hope this helps. We spend less on our hotel and that allows us to do more activities (like our scuba diving) and we take more frequent trips (this summer we are going an average of once every three weeks). |

| Check out hotels on Hotwire.com You can often save $50 or more a night on hotel rooms. I just booked a beachfront 3 star hotel in St. Pete beach for $85/night and another 3 star in Orlando for $40/night near Sea World- It was The Hyatt Place. You choose the area you wish to stay in & hotel amenities, star rating, etc & book it. They tell you the name of the hotel after booking. It's a good way to save money. I usually check out hotels & prices first on Travelocity to get an idea of prices & hotels in the area.
