Which Atlantic beach is good for...?

On the way home from our trip to WDW, we want to take at least a few hours to explore a beach. We're coming down on I75 but with no time to explore the gulf coast before checking in. On the way home, we're planning on taking I95, but any beach from Cape Canaveral up through St. Augustine would do. Highway 1A seems to run right along the ocean, so that might be really scenic. How much longer would it take, and is it worth it?
My girls have never seen the ocean, and I know they would love to collect seashells. My question is which beaches do you recommend? None of us will try surfing. We just want a beach to walk along and enjoy; we may swim a little. Which beaches are good for shells? Can you even collect seashells? I only ask because I have no idea. I'd love any and all opinions! Thanks!

We usually stay in Cocoa Beach when going to the Atlantic side. We go before WDW and book a night or 2. This Aug. we booked Hampton Inn. My dd's (19 & 23 this year) like Ron Jons surf shop, the Pier, and surfing.

My suggestion would be New Smyrna Beach. It is just south of Daytona Beach. It is much quieter than Daytona Beach or Cocoa Beach. If you drive a couple miles south down A1A from NSB you will end up at the National Sea Shore. There are lots of places to pull off and you could walk for miles along the beach or you could just set up in front of one of the wooden walkways and swim, beach comb, and just enjoy the beauty and solitude it offers. I think it is a great way to slow down and relax after a busy WDW vacation. There is also a nice little downtown area on the ocean side of NSB for eating or shopping.

I adore Daytona Beach Shores, a peninsula south of Daytona. But it's not great for shells. New Smyrna Beach would be the way to go and not get you too far south.
