A very special scrapbook to share! About This Page:

This has been a project in the planning stages for over three years, and in the last month or so, it finally came to fruition!!

In 1964-65, I was 4 years old and lived in Queens, New York. That was the year that the New York World's Fair opened. The World's Fair covered about a square mile of Flushing Meadow Park, and to me, was a magical place. It apparently was to my mother also, as she and I took many a trip there during its two seasons, 1964 and 1965. In fact, according to my father, I rode "it's a small world" 23 times! The fair held alot of fond memories for my parents. I didn't remember as much until...

Fast forward to three years ago, when Steve and I started to go through some old slides. I found three trys marked "World's Fair". Intrigued, I took them to our local photo shop for printing. Out came 99 photos of magic! I knew this legacy was meant to be preserved. I started to scout around for some meorobilia, such as post cards, maps and flyers. I also started to collect other types of memorobilia, like trays, glasses, and dishes.

This summer, I had collected enough that I thought it was time to do this project. Once it began, it went quickly! It was so much fun to relive those days and honor a special memory that my mother and I shared.

In a less PC world, many religions were represented:


Lots of places to eat and relax with a cold beer! (This one is blurry like I had too much beer! ) Also, note the cat tail as Rocky tried to help.


My personal favorite, "it's a small world". This was presented by Pepsi-Cola as a salute to UNICEF and all the children of the world!


The fair offered a skyride, a panoramic view from the NY State building and a heliport that would allow you to view it from the air:

Finally...the last page!



This is pretty blurry...but the first picture is my Dad and I, the second in my Dad, me and my grandmother, and the last one is me. The text reads:

The 1964-1965 New York World’s Fair was a magical place from a world that no longer exists. Born in theory before the tumultuous 60’s began, it took shape through the private financing and largely through the dreams of one man, Robert Moses.
From the start, the Fair was destined to fail. It operated at a constant financial loss. It took a beating from the press, who claimed everything from not enough international exposure to not the right type of food. And of course, as with any major project, allegations of financial mishandling abounded.
But to a 4 year old girl, none of that mattered. To me, the fair was magical. It was a square mile of lights, rides, fun and fantasy. It had “it’s a small world” and a whole display of dinosaurs. It had a dolphin show and a sky ride. I could eat all the junk food I wanted while my parents could sip a cold beer and relax.
The fair closed on October 17, 1965. I don’t think I noticed. But as I grew older and saw the rotting skeleton that Flushing Meadow Park had become, the loss became more pronounced. The buildings began to crumble, and the glory that once was the World’s Fair faded into destiny.
In 2006, I discovered three trays of slides labeled “World’s Fair”. I took these to our local camera shop, where I had them printed. What came back in those envelopes brought back so many memories and such a strong sense of nostalgia that I knew the pictures needed to be showcased.
I have since become a collector of World’s Fair memorabilia. I can close my eyes now and picture the Fountain of the Planets by the Unisphere, watch the jumping dolphins or sail over the fair in the skyride.
Thank you for joining me on this sentimental journey back to an innocent time. A time when we all thought that “Peace Through Understanding” was not just a theme, but could be a way of life.
