Ideas for scrapbooking with kids! During the schoolyear, I help teach an afterschool class on newspaper writing. The kids are in grades 2-5 and they put out a school newspaper 3-4 times during the schoolyear. Every year we try to include weeks where we do different projects such as writing poetry, learning how to cartoon, corresponding with penpals etc. Anything to get the kids to use their creative writing skills. Because I'm now into scrapbooking, I mentioned to the teacher who does the class with me that it might be fun to do a unit on scrapbooking. I figured the kids could bring in photos from home and then we could have them make mini albums. For those of you with children who may have actually scrapbooked with them, do you have any ideas or suggestions? I'm sure we will want to try to keep costs down as well so we hopefully won't have to charge a fee, so any money saving suggestions would be appreciated as well! Thanks everyone, you are the best!

Re: Ideas for scrapbooking with kids! Vicky -- what a great idea! I saw an idea for scrapbooking with kids on DIY's Cropping USA Weekend. (Now I wish I'd paid more attention! LOL) All I remember for sure is that the binding was really simple -- for a small (less than 6" square) book, punch two holes at the edge and bind the pages with those colorful little rings that work like key rings. I'll see if I can find more info on the DIY website. How fun!

[/ QUOTE ]You know, I've seen Sandy Genovese do mini albums that aren't done in a scrapbook type album, but have paper covers and are tied together with ribbon. I've looked up a couple of examples: Accordian Fold Album Year in Review Gift Album and Templates Complete Project Listing - Scroll down to By Kids For Kids section |

Re: Ideas for scrapbooking with kids! I just thought of another one Sandi G. did over the weekend -- folded cardstock, bound with a thick rubber band that is slightly shorter than the height of the cardstock. Simple and inexpensive!

Re: Ideas for scrapbooking with kids! My DDs are 10 and 13 and they have been scrapbooking for about a year (they got me into it). Their first book was a spiral bound 6 x 8 album. But I think the idea of making a book with cardstock covers is even better, as far as costs go. If your school has a binding machine, you could even bind their pages together when they are finished with them into a book. My 10 yr. old wants to have a scrapbook-themed birthday party, so I'm trying to figure out the most cost-effecient way to have books for all the girls to work on. I had thought about buying inexpensive 3-ring notebooks and plastic pages that they could put their pages into. I'm going to buy glue sticks for them to use. We have lots of card stock and stickers to finish their pages off. As far as getting paper and stickers, etc. you could ask if any parents have some materials they aren't going to use and donate it. Our Hobby Lobby often has marked down paper on the end aisle for 1/2 price. There are usually lots of good patterns that many adults wouldn't use but kids would love! Another option would be to download pictures from the internet that they could use in place of stickers. If your school has a die cut machine you could cut out different shapes ahead of time for them to use. I think this will be a fun idea! I've enjoyed reading everyone's thoughts on this project!
