I can get a preferred room for $50 extra for our four nights. I've not stayed at a value resort before but I do understand this means a better location. Are the rooms themselves any nicer? We are certainly able to walk, so if we are just talking about location it probably isn't worth the extra $$$ to us.
We always stay in a preferred room at POP, it is mostly for the location. But it is worth it to us, because 2 people in our party have mobility issues.
I dont believe the rooms are any different

We always stay in preferred locations, no matter which resort we stay at. My wife has severe mobility issues, and we need to be as close to the food court and bus stops as possable. The rooms themselves are no different, just the location.
I hated Pop period, it was loud, crowded, obnoxiouz tacky themed, and poor service of all the Values we stayed at.... but I would strongly suggest paying the extra $50 for the preferred room, the place is huge, and it's a long walk to the food court & busses - even from a preferred room. Tip- we were in the 60's building just past the Hippy Dippy Pool, infront of the kiddy pool, near Baloo & Mowglie, on the first floor, was a great spot to be in, because even though you're in a preferred and still close to everything, we were far enough away from the main pool that we didn't get as much of the noise ( I still won't go back to Pop though!)
Just to cover one unanswered question... there's no difference in the decor/size/furnishings of the preferred room. It's all about location, location, location.

i'd be inclined to ask where you would be with and with out paying the $50. IMO there is somewhat of a walk regardless of where you stay. Definatly yes, some are longer than others. You may want to check into that and see how much closer you get. I have heard that the side of the 70's ( for instance ) that faces the lake is preferred, but that is still a longer walk than preferred rooms facing the Cafe/gife shop. Unless they are going to put you in the 80's or 90's I might be inclined to spend the money on something else.
The rooms are the same in decor. The location makes a big difference if you have anyone who has mobility issues or who gets really tired (like a 4 year old) at the end of a hard day at the parks. Its always been worth the $10/day for us.
I have stayed at POP 3 times, and each time was a "standard room". If walking is not an issue, don't bother with the preferred location. Some of those preferred locations are right at a pool which can be loud until late at night.
I have stayed in the 80's building, close to the 90's. It was a pretty quick walk across the parking lot to the bus and/or food court and Everything Pop. Twice I stayed in the 50's building. Once was over looking the Bowling Pin Pool and once looking more toward a parking lot. Since we didn't spend any time looking at the "view" it really didn't matter.
I can't imagine anyone having to walk 30 minutes to/from the bus at Pop! The resort really isn't that big! If you strolled around the resort, checking out the buildings and reading all the time line signs....THAT might take you an hour.
Another vote for a standard room. We have stayed in Bldg 9 in the 80s section twice and are requesting it next year again. Close to the 80's pool (Where they play 80's music! Go Duran Duran, go!) and we are at the bus stops less than 3 minutes after closing our hotel room door.
