This is "our" resort and we have stayed there 8 times.
We have stayed in all areas of the resort; the standard rooms are all the same, but the preferred rooms should have a privacy curtain near the sink to provide a dressing area. The preferred rooms in Calypso are nearest the food court, etc. Consider if you want to face the pool or not; it could be slightly noisy if you are facing the main pool.
If you are not going to stay in a preferred room then consider whether or not you will have a problem with a five-minute walk if you end up in Country. Country is the quietest, has a picnic table in the area, and you are still close to the Piano pool, but if walking is an issue, request a room in Jazz.
There are no fridges or coffeemakers in the rooms. You can rent a fridge for about $10/day or if you have medical necessity, you can request one for free. We get one that way because we have to keep insulin and other drugs cool. Have the request added to your reservation. We also specify ground floor due to mobility issues, and have always gotten it. The food courts do have toasters and microwaves for guest use if you bring PopTarts or want to heat something like soup or baby food.
We tend to avoid the early morning rush at the food court by either going around 8:30-9:00, or having one of us go pick up breakfast. We always get refillable mugs as we eat at least once per day at the resort and get beverages in the evening too. You can also eat at the other AS food courts. We usually eat at Movies at least once since its the newest and often has something a little different for dinner. And the last McDonald's on property is right outside the security gate for the All Star Resort, making it convenient for a late-night run.
This is one resort where you can pool hop with impunity. You may use the pools at Sports, Music and Movies. Just bring your towels and walk or drive across the parking areas that separate the resorts. We actually picked this resort out of a guidebook because my son loved the Three Caballeros squirting away in the middle of the huge guitar (main) pool.
Walk around the resort and enjoy the big icons like the giant boots (Country), drum set (Jazz), and theater marquee (Broadway). Don't just look in the daytime; the resort is lovely at night with the icons, fountain, etc. lighted up. There is also a nice shaded playground for children behind Calypso (building 1?).
Have a great trip!

Also our home away from home... good advice from yalibrarian. We love Broadway it is quiet and close to the piano pool and laundry. The walk to the food court in the morning and evening is lovely. There is a nice sitting area with a fountain that leads directly to the main pool. We spend very little time in the rooms and the All Stars have always been our resort of choice. We were upgraded unexpectedly once to Coronado Springs which was nice and I was treated to AK Lodge for my 50th bday.
You will love it at ASMU!
With the suites, you will be either in Calypso or Jazz, very close to everything. And of course, you'll have a mini-fridge, coffeemaker, and microwave of your own. I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

Yes, they have suites facing away from the pool area. Just add the request to your reservation. If you check-in online, be sure it is noted there. And remind the CM when you check-in at the resort. As the number of suites is very limited, if possible, check in fairly early so they have the option to swap you if for some reason they missed the request. But we have always gotten our requests!
