We would like to try tent camping at Disney. I have a few questions for those who have camped (tent) at Fort Wilderness. We have previously stayed several times at the cabins and really enjoy the resort. We would be going in June. I know it's hot then, although not as hot as July and August,...... Im hoping. We would probably split the stay (BW first) so that we camped at the end of our trip. What do you think? Will it be ridiculously hot? Are the comfort stations clean-ish? And just any other camping info you can think of to tell me regarding Disney tent camping would be great! Im not sold on it yet (although I would normally enjoy camping...)
I will be FW tent camping for the first time this Nov. In fact it will be my first time at FW ever even though we camp a lot. Thanks to a suggestion from someone on this board check out the DIS boards. There is a whole section dedicated to FW.
Well, I wouldn't want to tent camp at WDW I guess you'd be driving. So much gear to bring, tents, tarps, chairs, sleeping bags, mattresses, in addition to your regular stuff.
But if I tent camped, I'd do that first, then go stay at a resort last. I think it would be too much of a shock to the system to be in a nice resort, then go sleep in the dirt, lol!
My mom tent camped at WDW a couple of times. She now has a small trailer.
Things she liked:
It's fun, cheap, and it's WDW. The comfort stations are nicely kept, and the campground, while large, doesn't really feel like you're in a huge place.
What she didn't like:
Squirrels. Smart squirrels. They raided her tent and stole food. The chewed a hole in the tent.
If you go as you want, on a split stay - I'd do the camping first.
Camping, yes, tents NO!
Tent camping at WDW should be done by those who have the equiment, know how to make a safe camp, and who enjoy tenting. The stations are clean and safe. For me brushing teeth in a public bathroom is not of concern but for others it is. Have you gone tent camping and do you have all the equipment? If you want to try roughing it then start off with a trailer or rental vehicle if you do not have the equipment and knowledge. I liked going with my father cross country in our truck with a camper on it.
DUCK! was heard coming from a kid with his parents in a golf cart.
Actually it was an armadillo. I was heading toward my car and of course he headed for the bushes next to my car. STAY, do you bite?
True Story that happened to me 5 hours ago.

Disneyland was fun with flag retreat and pickles. I have a home here, thank you. GAC is NOT a "front of the line pass".
She is gone but keeping signature. Laundry is getting done. My purpose in life is to help poor people in FL. Farewell, will miss you.
I have tent camped before but never at Disney. I have to agree with the comments previous to mine. If you're determined to do it, camp first and then move to the hotel, you'll appreciate it more!
The other thing to consider besides animals, proper equipment, and facilities is rain. I've camped when a thunder storm as come through (a mini monsoon) and I will say, it's not fun! On our last 'family' trip to DW we had ressies for Hoop Dee Doo, the skies turned black, there was horrific thunder and lightening, tree branches were falling, electricity was out for awhile, it was a mess not to metion scarey! All the time I was thinking as we drove by in our car was about the people who were at the camp sites must be miserable.
Good Luck with your decision and whether you choose to camp or not you're better off then me, at least you have a trip planned in the near future. SW+7
We have definitely camped in the past and we do have all of the proper camp equipment... we camp in TX! But I do appreciate the info and I agree.... we would definitely appreciate the BW after a few days of roughing it! My biggest concerns are the weather and the amount of camping equipment we have to haul in and put up/take down for only 3 nights. We will probably wait to camp when we have a full week and it is cooler weather. Thanks again!
i have tent camped at WDW with 40 GS. The campsites were wonderful and flat. They were level sand or finely ground shell. The comfort stations were very clean. The camp store was nice. Some of the girls used the pool and thought it was very nice. Bus transportation was good however you take a bus to go to the bus that will take you to the park. We camped in August 1998. The afternoon rain cooled things off in the campsite and we all had to have light cover at night. Do remember to stake the tent for winds and have nothing touching the walls. out of 12 tents we only had one that 'took on water.' the girls had piled stuff up against the walls.

I agree, for 3 days, it's just not worth all the work. I haven't gone to Fla in June, but i can tell you, in Aug the afternoon rain can be torrential. Not to mention the lightening.
DH and I camped at Ft. Wilderness several years ago -- think prior to all of the luggage restrictions! -- as we brought our tent with us on the plane! Yep, we put it in a hard-sided golf club carrier, brought all of our bedding and air mattress in a checked bag (thank you Space Bags!), and we met with friends, who were camping with us, who also had a car that we could get groceries with, etc.
I am not an outdoorsy girl, but if the showers and bathrooms are clean and relatively bug-free, I'm good to go -- and they were totally nice!
The only differences are that we 1) camped in November, so the temperatures were much milder than they would be in June (although it did rain once, on my birthday, but it didn't ruin our experience because it's Disney rain (and it's generally more tolerable, right?) plus our tent didn't leak! ) and 2) we did camp for a week so the effort was probably more "worth it;" i.e. traveling with all of that gear now, with just the additional costs that we didn't incur then, is it really worth it?
Also, I would suggest, if you were still considering camping on part of a future trip, camp first. That way, if the camping aspect wasn't all that great, you can still end your trip on a more comfortable note!
