Well, its probably more than one question actually. I'm considering the split stay because I really want to experience more resorts. Plus, I'm actually thinking that it might keep the costs down. We had wanted to do a whole week at AKL, but I'm thinking that might be out of our price range.
First, we are considering AKL and POR (maybe a Royal Room?) Would you do the moderate resort first, even considering the Royal Room?
Secondly, what about discounts? I know that sometimes its just certain hotels. Do they offer discounts on the Royal Rooms? Not sure if anyone knows because I know they are fairly new.
Tickets will transfer without any issues?
Is there anything else I should know about doing a split stay?
I've seen others here mention having Disney transfer the luggage. Has anyone had any issues doing this? Do we just mention it at the front desk when we check out?
Split stays are very easy. When I did it, I transferred from POR to Poly. I brought my luggage to bell services and told them I was moving to the Poly. I immediately went to the Poly to check in and then I went to the MK. When I came back, I just called Poly's Bell services and they delivered my bags. They wouldn't deliver the bags while I was out, but that wasn't a problem. It only took about 5 minutes from my call to Poly's bell services to receiving my bags.
I'm glad I did the deluxe 2nd. I felt like I was "trading up." I suppose you could do it the other way, but it felt better to me to move to a "better" resort because I didn't feel like I was losing anything. And it was like a second vacation!
I would definitely plan on staying at the moderate first and then the deluxe. You wouldn't want to feel like you downgraded half way through your vacation. It's very easy to plan a split stay. I think the easiest way to do it is to book two room only reservations and then buy your ticket media separately.
Another vote for doing the deluxe last. We've done split stays a number of times, without issue (it's like two vacations in one and keeps the costs down). I too would recommend buying ticket media separately and just do room only reservations!
We have done a split stay before. We had no problems with our bags being tranferred and being available once we left the park to check into the second part of our stay. We are doing more nights this time for our split stay and we, as I have seen suggested several times, are "trading up". I agree that it will seem like a second vacation! As well, I like the idea of ticket media seperate from the room res. (ilovedisney247) I have always bought tickets "outside of Disney" so this was never something we had to think of as part of planning a split stay.
When we have done split stays before we happen to have a car while onsite, so we brought our luggage with us when checking into our 2nd resort. I know WDW moves luggage everyday for guests who do split stays and 99% it all makes it. However there is always that 1% chance of something getting lost because I have read of that happening the odd time. Now we were also lucky that both times we did a split stay our room was ready, however if it wasn't at least our luggage was at the resort and kept in the luggage area.
Personally, it would be too much of a hassle doing a split stay for a week. I'd pick one resort. Either POR (our fav mod) or AKL. If you're looking to save money, I'd go with a regular room at POR. We stayed in one of the new rooms last Aug, in Acadian House, and it was very nice.
If you do the split stay- no your tickets don't transfer over as such, you would have your tickets (if buying from WDW on a package) on your first reservation for your entire trip. Then you would book room only for second stay, and just use your KTTW card from first resort for park admission during your second resort stay.
To poster who asked about DDP- if you don't have APs, it isn't economical to have DDP on both reservations. You can get the DDP on the 1st res, with tickets for your lenght of stay at both resorts. Then do room only on second reservation.
DDP is a package that requires booking park tickets- so having to buy 2 sets of park tickets for a split stay is pricey. If you're an AP holder, they waive the ticket req.

How did you get to the Poly? We won't have a car, so we'll be relying on a cab or Disney transportation.
