When can I do this before we leave? Does it offer it to u in a email or just when u log in to check your ressies? If I do online check in can I still get our first trip and birthday buttons when we get to the hotel? We are staying in a Preffered Room at Port Orleans so I wasn't going to request a room upon a arrival anyway. Thanks!
On-line check-in can be done up to 10 days prior to your arrival. An e-mail will be sent after you do the on-line check in to confirm. I used to find the link using the Disney Vacation Connection Widget, but since that is no longer working, I'm not sure how to find the site for on-line check-in. Yes, you can still get your buttons when you arrive, even if you have done the on-line check-in.
We've done it for our last three trips and have been pleased each time.
Have a great trip!
There is a link for online check-in in the FAQ about it.
Even with online check-in, you still have to go to a counter at your resort and give ID to complete the process. You will be able to get your buttons then.
Have a great vacation!

We have used online check in the past few trips and it has worked very well. We spend very little time at the counter. Also, and I don't know if this has anything to do with online check in, but our room has been ready everytime for us when we got there around noon.
HATE online check in. Used it when I stayed at All Star Music and was put in the worst room on property. Couldn't have been any further back in the Country Faire Section. Haven't done it since and won't be doing it this trip.
Love online check in! We always do it. We request whatever part of the resort we want and have always gotten our requests. It does save time upon arrival and your welcome packet will be all assembled for you.
I think over the years Disney has done online check in, they have improved it, and I find that it's a seamless experience now.

Where do you put in your request? There is a spot to request a crib or a fridge but there is no place on the online check in (at least there wasn't in when I did it for our AS Music stay) where you can type a section of the resort. I had a request on my reservation as to where we wanted to stay but that wasn't upheld and we were put in the Country Faire section all the way in the back.
Quick and easy. . .still go to the desk, but spend less time there.
Pretty much this sums it up: faster than standing in line while they type everything up and put your packet together. Even when we needed a room change, it only took a few minutes (we requested 1st floor for medical reasons and had been assigned 2nd) for the helpful CM to get us changed to the room we wanted.

I always use online check in, as others have said all your room keys are ready to go. The online checkin line is usually always shorter then regular line. For us it cut the checkin process time to less then 10 min. And if you do not like the room you are assigned you can ask them to change it there too.
We have had great experiences with online check in. When we've paid for a preferred room that is exactly what we got - great room in a great location. In January we arrived at WL at 7:00 in the morning, fully expecting we'd have to store our carry-ons and wait until the afternoon for our room. Instead, our room was not just ready, we had been upgraded. AND our 25th Anniversary pins were already made up for us. We had a really magical stay! We'll be doing online check in again in September.
