I know my sister and her family checked out early and didn't get any money back, but she didn't ask about it either. She was just frustrated that her kids (first trip to Disney) only wanted to swim in the resort pool and didn't want to go to the parks anymore so they checked out a day early and headed home (they drove). Why she didn't just stay there and let them swim for the last day is beyond me, but whatever (personally, I can't imagine checking out of WDW early for anything other than a serious illness or other family emergency :-D). When I asked her if they at least got a refund for 1 night at the resort (she had a room only ressie) she said, "No. I didn't even think to ask about that when I checked out. I was just so mad at the kids for wanting to swim rather than go to the parks that I just wanted to get home." I would specifically ask about it when he checks out if he leaves early.
Can't speak for Disney, but I know at other hotels it's often okay if you tell them ahead of time -- "We're going to be leaving Thursday, not Friday" but they're less accepting when you say "We're leaving TODAY."
Of course, that assumes it's a pay-on-checkout arrangement. Prepaid ressie would probably be a different thing.
Although now that I think about it -- we did leave the Marco Island Marriott early one year because the weather was lousy, and added a night at the beginning of our WDW stay.

So he stopped by the front desk this morning and asked them. They said since he has a room only reservation as long as he gives them 24 hours notice he won't be charged for the remaining days.
But he also told me that he has since decided he'll probably stay for the full 10 days because he wants to do a day at the Kennedy Space Center and another day visiting friends who live nearby.
We did it before. I had a room only reservation for an one day more than we decided to stay at ASMovies. We decided to leave a day earlier than our original plan. We did not get charged for the last day.
