AKL Standard rooms - best location? Ok, now that we have changed our resort to AKL, I have become obsessed with finding all the info I can on that resort. We have a standard view room booked, although in the back of my mind I keep thinking there may be a remote chance we could be upgraded. But, going back to reality, I'm wondering if there is a specific area that I should request for a standard room? Also, I read somewhere that some of the rooms take a very long time to reach. I read somebody's report that it took them 20 minutes to walk to their room! Is that true?? Oooo, I am so excited (insert Simba roar here) !!!

Re: AKL Standard rooms - best location? We just got back and stayed at AKL for 10 nights. When we checked in we were upgraded for free to a savannah room, it was wonderful! We had booked a standard room on the giraffe trail cause it looks close to everything. Where we ended up was great though. Unless you are way out in the savannah view rooms, nothing is that far away. Check out the layout in the passporter.

Re: AKL Standard rooms - best location? Nice to hear about the upgrade! That must have been a wonderful surprise. I think the standard view rooms are in the two wings at the front of the hotel. Those rooms appear to be close to the main elevator that takes you to the gift shop, pool, Jiko, Boma and the Mara. Allears has a map too you can look at to get an idea. I agree that the standard rooms on the Giraffe Trail would be the closest to most things.

| Re: AKL Standard rooms - best location? We stayed in the farthest possible location (Kudu Trail, way at the end), and it was about a 10 minute walk. It wouldn't be great with little ones without a stroller or if you had mobility issues, but it was fine for us. Awesome savannah view for sure. | Re: AKL Standard rooms - best location? So if we plan on visiting the pool and Mara, I should request Giraffe Trail? Do you have to walk back towards the lobby to get to the pool area, or are there doors from the Giraffe Trail that are closer? |

Re: AKL Standard rooms - best location? I have been lucky enough to have stayed at the AKL two times, both times I booked a standard view room and both time I was upgraded! I understand where you are coming from with the thought of not wanting to get your hopes up, but it is so hard not to when you hear so many wonderful upgrade storys happening there. The first time I was upgraded to a pool view room (There are doors off the giraffe trail that take you out to the pool/Mara - no need to go all the way back to the lobby). The second time I was upgraded to a savannah view - it was clear at the end of the Zebra Trail, but the view was worth the the walk - it was awesome! I don't recall the walk taking 20 minutes though - maybe 10 at the most from the bus stop to room. I did send a fax to the room assigner - I never asked for a specific room - just the best one that they could give us - but a giraffe room would get you closer the "action" - but if you do end up in a Standard view room that is the side that everyone walks by when getting off the bus, so there would be a little more traffic going by your room, perhaps if you had a room on a higher floor that wouldn't be much of an issue, but I can't speak from experience on that one. Happy planning, any room at the AKL is an awesome room, you will have fun!

Re: AKL Standard rooms - best location? We booked a standard room and were upgraded to a beautiful pool view room. We had a room on Zebra trail, it was close to the elevators and to the lobby. All rooms are far from the bus stop. The end of our hallway had a nice set of stairs to the pool. Good luck, you will love AKL!
