Split Trip: WDW and Universal Stay at WDW for whole trip or not?

Hi I am planning on going to WDW and Universal next year. I am trying to figure out if I should stay just on WDW property or split between a Disney hotel (on site) and then a Universal hotel (on site). Has anybody ever done this?
I am thinking I would probably do the whole visit at a Disney hotel because I want to take advantage of the 'magic your way' pass. On the other hand what's the transportation like from Downtown disney to Universal studios or is there even any bus going there from DTD at all?

Thanks,
Gina.
PS I'm planning this as a solo trip for about 2-4 days at universal and 4-8 days at Disney.

I don't know of any Disney trnasportation that goes to US, but I could be wrong. We stayed at Hard Rock last year for our trip to US, and the girls loved it. I didn't get the "FEEL" that they did but I am not a teenager. the walk to the parks from HR was less than 5 mins, and you get unlimited Front of the Line Pass by staying on site.

I'm not as experienced as others; but I don't believe there is transportation from DTD to Universal. I would think it would be most enjoyable to do a split stay. I've also heard that there are park freebies involved in staying on property when visiting Universal that is similar to Disney's fastpass and EMH. Hopefully someone will come along with better information for you.

I just did this in June! Definitly stay on property at Universal. All the hotels are walking distance from the parks and there's a water taxi for when walking doesn't appeal to you. And your room key works as an unlimited front of the line pass. It's wonderful, you get so much done so there's lots of time to relax

We just decided to do the same for our trip in May of 09. We are going to start our trip at the Hard Rock hotel for 3 nights and then head over to disney for 5 nights at the Beach Club. I think you are going before us so let me know how it goes
