Any news of January resort discounts or info on Veteran discount?

I wonder if anyone has heard of any discounts for value resorts in January? I was just about to book 2 rooms at Pop Century with the 40% off Disney Visa promotion for that time period, and then I noticed that it does not inclue value resorts. Darn the luck! Since I need to reserve 2 rooms (1 for the grandparents), it gets pretty pricey!

So, I welcome any suggestions. We like to be in a Disney resort if my Dad (88 yrs old) needs to go back to the resort at anytime. That makes it easy for my mom (only in her 60s) to take him back via the transportation system. I wonder if my Dad would qualify for the Veteran's discount since he is a WWII veteran. In the past, you had to be active military, but I think I heard it might be expanded to our older vets. Anyone know?

Thanks!!

All of the Veteran discounts I have heard of are for Active Duty and Retired (20 years of services or a medical discharge) members. He would have to have a current military id card.
So far I have not heard of any discounts past the promotion that ends in December. Keeping my fingers crossed though.

You may want to inquire about Shades of Green. I've heard their rooms are large, and I know their grounds are lovely.

At the 40% off rate, it you calculate what it would be to stay at a Moderate resort? It may still be a savings (although not as good as 40% off at a value). Good luck finding a great deal!

To the best of my knowledge, the 40% off military promotion has not been announced as extending past the end of this year (this was the first year they have offered this promotion). If they are going to do that promotion again, they have not said anything about it as of yet. :

As far as who could get that discount, I believe it was available for active and retired (20+ years or med. discharge w/ current retiree ID) military and activated National Guard.

As far as regular discounts for January, I haven't seen any, myself . . . everything I have seen thus far only went as far as 12/24/09.

I found the veterans' info online, but it appears more pricey than the value resorts! I must be reading it wrong, but I don't think it will work. I am sure Dad would qualify, except that he only has his discharge papers and they ask for some form that I bet he doesn't have. He was awarded a Bronze Star, but the funny thing is that that wouldn't take the place of the particular form they want, I am sure. Who knows if they even had that form back then....

Here is the info, though: Shades of Green offers a “Salute to Our Veterans” Program, which is designed to give ALL military veterans who served less than 20 years and received an honorable discharge (verified by current DD-214), the opportunity to vacation at Shades of Green during the months of January and September only. (If you are a 100% disabled veteran, see above.) The veterans rate is similar to the rate they charge retired military. [url=http://www.shadesofgreenvets.org]

We tried Shades a year and a half ago. The rooms are huge, and the transportation is avail to and from Shades to any of the parks. It's located right across the street from the Poly.

I guess that's why its exclusive to people that have served this country let alone the price for them is proudly and rightfully much cheaper than the regular Disney tourist.

We stayed at Shades of Green for 2 weeks (yes, 2 weeks! ) in June and July and it was wonderful. The rooms are huge, the amenities are great and the transportation was OK. You certainly won't find another room on property that size for as low a price as they run. : (we are a category 2, so we paid $117/night . . . it recently went up to $123/night for a standard room in cat. 2)

Here is some more info for you:

SOG Eligibilty: Shades of GreenŽ Resort on WALT DISNEY WORLD Resort official website is the only Armed Forces Recreation Center (AFRC) located in the continental U.S. Shades of GreenŽ on WALT DISNEY WORLDŽ Resort is a military resort serving the U.S. Army, Navy, Air

Booking rules: Shades of GreenŽ Resort on WALT DISNEY WORLD Resort official website is the only Armed Forces Recreation Center (AFRC) located in the continental U.S. Shades of GreenŽ on WALT DISNEY WORLDŽ Resort is a military resort serving the U.S. Army, Navy, Air

Room rates and categories: http://shadesofgreen.org/roomrates.pdf

Amenities: Shades of GreenŽ Resort on WALT DISNEY WORLD Resort official website is the only Armed Forces Recreation Center (AFRC) located in the continental U.S. Shades of GreenŽ on WALT DISNEY WORLDŽ Resort is a military resort serving the U.S. Army, Navy, Air

I can say though, that my grandfather is a WWII vet who only served a couple of years during the war, was injured (but not 100% disability) then was honorably discharged . . . he has said that he is not eligible to stay at SOG. But I am not sure if he just doesn't have his discharge papers or what. : You might want to give them a call to check about your dad's status and double check the January and September deal, but I am pretty sure that Jan. and Sept. are open to all honorably discharged, with or without injuries, current ID's, etc.

The prices for SOG's rooms are comparable to a moderate resort during value season, only without sales tax . . . and the rooms are comparable to a deluxe . . . only bigger.

Guest Services: (407) 824-2437
Reservations: (407) 824-3400

Hope this helps!

ETA: Even thought he has his "old" discharge papers, all he would need to do is go here: How to Request Military Service Records or Prove Military Service (DD Form 214, DD-214, DD214 ------ and he should be able to get an updated copy of his discharge papers. The DD-214 form has been the military discharge form since at least the 1970's, not sure what it was before that, but if he is worried about the old ones not being accepted, it should be easy to get a "new" form.

ETA (again): I am assuming you are talking about this coming January, so I checked availability at SOG on their website . . . they have limited availability New Year's Day . . . and are COMPLETELY BOOKED January 7-11. Other than that, they have availability all month.

Thank you everyone for all the links. They have truly been quite helpful! I am happy to say that we were able to use a code that my mom found to get a January discount at a value resort. It brings the price in at the cheapest possible (less than any military one offered), so we are very pleased. After looking at the Shades of Green links, it appeared that the WWII veterans don't really qualify, although the initial descriptions make it sounds as if they would. Oh well, in my book our WWII vets are still the great heroes that they are!
