Bugs at WDW?

I just realized that this is my second post today concerning bugs! I wasn't even sure which board to post it on, and ya know...there's not really a smiley to use for bugs either, unless of course you just got one in your month! OR... (just kidding!)
Anyway, I was just reading on another forem about these bugs that come out in September at WDW. Does anybody know about these? Are they everywhere? How long do they stick around? I ask that because up here in Ohio by Lake Erie, we get these bugs called muffleheads, and they are everywhere, your windshield will be covered with them, they are really messy! But they usually only hang around a few days and that's it for the year. Now if only the ladybugs would get out of our house!!!

Re: Bugs at WDW?

You must be thinking of love bugs, they are swarming little guys whose only purpose seems to be to fly around and bang into things really hard. They do usually come full force for September, but for me they really are only a distraction for the first few hours you are around them, then they become a minor inconvenience and you barely notice them.

I agree with Brant. Love bugs are said to be out in full force in Sept, but we hardly noticed them when we were there. -HiddenMickey

PS I wish my ladybug houseguests would leave too. Luckily this year there were only half as many as we've had the last two years .

Ahem, the lovebugs have already come out down here! There is no rhyme or reason as far as patterns go. They will continue to come and go until the fall. They are harmless; just a nuisance if you have cats that love to go "bug hunting"!!

Re: Bugs at WDW?

September is Love Bug time in WDW. But with the exception of 2000, we were never really bothered by them. In 2000 they really were all over the place and it got to be a bit much (gross!), but that was just one year. Last year I don't think I even saw any!

They are harmless -- just annoying at times

Re: Bugs at WDW?

Here is a hint for those pesky ladybugs (asian beatles?)...I live in N. Wisconsin and my parents have a cottage on the bay in the Upper Peninsula of MI. My whole family bought these gadgets (can't think of the name) that you plug into a wall socket - and it sends out vibrations or something. You can't hear it (neither can pets)- but the bugs can. It has helped tremendously with reducing the number of those ladybugs. THey don't die - but they go away. I guess they hate that vibration. We got the "gadget" at Wal-Mart and ShopKo. at the cottage - we only get a few ladybugs now - whereas initially - we had 100s.
Hope that helps.

Re: Bugs at WDW?

I don't think the ladybugs (Asian Beetles) ever left our part of Ohio this year. We had a really mild winter. But thanks ktbugsmom. I'm going to Wal-Mart tomorrow for one of these gadgets! I can already see the increase in the ladybugs since we have had a few warm days, and I don't know how they always seem to get into the house and hang out on the ceiling!

Re: Bugs at WDW?

We were in WDW last year, Sept 5-18. We were on the lookout for the love bugs because I'd read so much about them online. We saw the occasional couple, that's about it.
Now, being from San Diego, we don't get a whole lot of mosquitos, and in WDW, we learned very quickly to apply Off as soon as the sun went down. Those are the bugs I can do without!!

Re: Bugs at WDW?

We were not troubled with them at all last year; but there is a neat site devoted to them on the Cornell Uiversity Entymology web site!

Re: Bugs at WDW?

We encountered the Love Bugs in September 2000. They were mostly a Nuisance at the Resort Pool if you were in the Lounge Chairs. They never were in the Pools.
A funny story (to me) about Love Bugs. My nephew & I had our resort cups on our Lounge Chairs at the Pool. When I came back from Swimming, there must have been 100's of them on the cups. They must like sweets. I took the cups & started to bang them on the ground to get them off cups. As I stood up to go inside to wash our cups I saw this Woman thrashing & waving away My Love Bugs. SHe was a good 30 -40 yards away from where I was and had no idea that the LB's I chased off my cups had flown directly to her. It was humourous to me because I had no idea that would happen & the sight of this person who must have wondered why the sudden attack on her as she tryed to shoo them all away was funny from my point of view.
So I guess they were more annoying for some. PS If you were that person @ the Pool that day, I am really sorry.
